micah smiled softly as maggie interacted with her son, before nodding slowly. “i’m sure there is, here let me look.” he said as he kneeled down next to her and looked through the first aid kit, finding the antiseptic before holding it up. “here, i found it. how exactly did you do this, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“i was just workin’ on the bird. sliced my hand on something under the hood,” she said, lifting the towel to look at it before quickly putting it back against her hand. “sweet baby jesus.”

“That’s awesome.” Ryder nodded. “It’s always cool to have celebrities be from your town, but it’s also cool to stay grounded and focus on other things besides that famous person like town pride and spirit.”
“yeah. it’s pretty neat. no one really makes a big deal about it when she’s in town because most knew her before her ‘idol’ days, but’s it’s still cool to think about. they used to make a big deal about it when she first became a celebrity, but no one really acknowledges her anymore, just let her do her thing and respect her privacy when she’s with her baby.”

“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that.” Aleja said. “I read somewhere that moms like you raise more successful children.” He added.
“i just don’t want him to get tired of me always being around.”

“That’s always fun, right? At least it gives you something to look forward to.”
“yeah. she funded the high school in checotah for their sports teams for girls. and the animal shelter to stop their killing policy. they're a no-kill shelter now because of her," she said. "but i mean, that's not all there is to our town. i always looked forward to cruise nights and burnouts and the town parades.”

“That’s awesome.” Aleja said with a nod. “I’m sure he’ll make friends easily.”
“no doubt about it. i just want him in my class so he’s with someone he’s comfortable with and can learn the ropes and how school will be for kindergarten. i wanna keep him with me for as long as i possibly can. i'm definitely a helicopter mom, but it's important to keep tabs on him as much as i can.”

algnvasquez:
“your mom is what?” he glanced around for a moment before looking towards the door he saw the boy come in from. “why don’t you show me where your momma is?” tony turned and placed his coffee on the kitchen counter, offering his free hand to the three-year-old and following behind his small foot steps, grabbing a handful of random kitchen towels that were piled nearby on his way out. “ma’am?” he let go of the boy’s hand and picked up the pace a few steps, beginning to jog slightly over to the girl who was huddled by a vehicle and clearly in pain. “let me see it,” he put his hand out, as he didn’t want to force her to do anything but felt the urgency to assist. whether he liked it or not, tony was prepared for a range of scenarios and helping injured was one, hand to hand combat was another, and surviving in the woods was yet another. the first two always seemed to be the most handy, for some reason things like this always found him.
“she was trying to fix her car and she hurt her hand, she’s bleeding a whole bunch,” ben explained, leading the other outside to maggie. as soon as the man let his hand go, the three-year-old ran over to his mother and sat on his knees next to her, watching her every move. “you got blood all over your coveralls,” he said. “it’s fine baby, they’re washable,” she said, sniffling as she held her hand out. she wasn’t sure what exactly she got cut by, but the wound was deep and nearly gushing with every pulse of her veins. “don’t cry, momma...” ben said, hugging her back and resting his head on her shoulder.

micah saw the small child scurrying inside and frowned, kneeling down to talk to the child in front of him. “oh no, wait right here and I’ll go get a towel okay?” he said softly, going inside and grabbing a towel and a first aid kit. He then followed the boy outside to his mother’s car. “hey.. i uh, your son came over and said you were hurt. i brought a towel and a first aid kit, just in case.” he said and handed the towel to her.
as soon as the towel was in her hand, she wrapped it around her other hand, putting as much pressure on it as she could stand. “god damn...” she whispered. “momma, you said the lord’s name in vain,” ben said. “it’s okay, he’ll forgive me. sometimes it’s okay to do,” she said, resting her head on her knees. “so you’ll still get into heaven?” maggie let out a small snort. “yeah. i’ll still get into heaven,” she said before looking at micah. “is there an antiseptic in that first aid kit?”

“I’ve heard of Carrie Underwood.” Ryder said with a nod. “There’s nothing wrong with small towns, but I heard they could be boring. I’m from Towson and not many people know where that is, so I just say Baltimore.”
“she’s pretty much ‘the person’ of our town. anybody around us knows that if carrie’s doing something for our town, the entirety of checotah’s gonna be supportive.”

“Well if you ever need a babysitter for when you gotta do a teaching lesson or whatever, I can watch Ben.”
“oh, he’ll be in school --- i just want him in my class so he’s not surrounded by strangers. if he’s in my class then when he goes into kindergarten, he’ll know how school works and won’t be nervous. that, and i’m just really nervous myself about him starting school. i still can’t believe he’s actually old enough for it.”

Ryder nodded. “We didn’t have geography in school.” He admitted. “Sorry if that was a stupid question.” He said with a slight chuckle.
“there aren’t many people that even know checotah and eufaula exist, so i’m not surprised. they’re really small towns. eufaula’s got just under three thousand people in it and checotah has just over three thousand, so there aren’t many. there’s nothing really important or cool about us. i mean, unless you consider carrie underwood being from our town cool, but that’s just about it. a quarterback for some football team is from henryetta, which is about twenty miles away. and we’ve got a castle in muskogee. but there’s really nothing very interesting about us, so we’re not really on the radar. even our own police station can’t get a true ping on satellite systems.”

maggie sighed, scratching her head as she stared into the hood of her car. benjamin was sitting on the edge, holding a flashlight for her. she started out putting fluids in, but upon further investigation she realized there were other issues. fixable issues, but definitely issues that she didn’t feel comfortable driving with. she leaned over the engine and moved some the the wires around so she could get to another part, but quickly pulled her hand out with a gasp, sitting herself down on the ground as she clutched one hand in the other, blood already dripping onto her overalls. “fuck!” she snapped. “that’s a bad word,” ben said. “i don’t care right now, seth — go get an adult from the house and tell them mommy got hurt and she needs a towel. now.” hearing the pain in his mother’s voice and the way she was already starting to cry let him know that it was serious — his mommy never cried about getting owwies. the three-year-old got down off the edge of the car as carefully as possible, letting the flashlight fall to the ground. he ran into the house as fast as his little legs would let him and ran to the nearest big person he saw. “um — um — momma hurt her hand and needs help and a — um, a towel, she’s bleeding,” benjamin said to them.

queen-sophia-the-great:
Sophia was unpacking her stuff in room with the door propped open. She didn’t understand how anyone could fit all of their stuff in these tiny rooms. Sophia was grateful she didn’t have a roommate, because she was definitely taking up both sides. She plopped down on her bed, exhausted. She heard someone pass her open door, “Hey!” she shouted, “Do you know where I can find some more hangers around here?”
maggie stopped and walked backwards until she was back at the open door. “wait for mommy, minnow,” she said before looking at the other girl. “i have a ton of hangers that i’m never gonna use, i can bring ‘em by after snack time.”

“yeah, thank god. he’s still being more partial to nursing, but i’d rather him be comfortable than miserable.”
