Making oak gall ink
Since my first batch of ink was such a success I thought I'd go ahead and start another! I would really recommend this project, it's so satisfying to go from foraging to writing letters with the finished product.
I foraged for galls in my local woodland. These growths appear on oak trees and are little spheres of protection for gall wasp grubs. It's important to check for the little round hole where the wasp exited before picking them. They vary in size and colouring. The biggest, smoothest ones are like marbles and some part of me wants to put them in my mouth.
The next job is to crush them with a pestle and mortar. This takes some elbow grease and it can probably be done more easily with a food processor but you know. I like a challenge.
The crushed galls go into a jar with a handful of rusty screws. The iron reacts with the tannin from the galls to produce the black ink. It kind of looks like a cheesecake base...
Okay now it looks gross. I absolutely do not want to put it in my mouth anymore. The instructions I used last time suggested adding one tablespoon of water per oak gall, but I'm experimenting with using a bit less. Perhaps because not all of the galls I find are the large kind, it seemed to be a little too much water on my first attempt. Once you've thrown it all together all that's left to do is wait! The liquid will immediately start to darken but it needs to be left for about a week before it's ready to be strained.
Once it's ready you can carefully strain it through an old scrap of cloth (or a coffee filter).
Now you can experiment with your ink! You can get different effects depending on whether you use a brush or a dip pen ๐๏ธ๐
If you try this project feel free to let me know how it goes! โจ
