HTML is a language that is expected to stay around for many years. Any front-end web technology will interact with HTML, the language of browsers, to create the tools that you use online. As technology continues to grow at a rapid rate, more developers are needed every day. Learning HTML is the first exciting step in being able to create the web technologies that most of us interact with and rely on every day.

Working in a small group setting, a Launch teacher will guide students through interactive activities that build students’ familiarity and expertise with foundational concepts like commands, patterns, loops, and more. They are then introduced to computing devices and guided through an exploration on how these principles are applied with coding.

Growing up online can make it easy to believe everything you find there. Discuss skills like checking the source of information and analyzing the purpose of a message. Talk about what types of sources can be reliable, and when to be skeptical of what you find online.

With the Piper Computer Kit, you can build your own computer from scratch! CSS was created by Håkon Wium Lie back in 1996 and, like all programming languages,  has gone through many changes since. It is a notoriously tricky markup language that makes web pages more engaging and accessible to users. At Launch Code After School we learn to code for kids between the ages of 7-14 how to code in CSS along with design principles and provide context for students to create and style beautiful web pages.

Currently there is a lack of quality technology and coding education in schools. As a result of there being few qualified teachers, what is currently being taught does not give students a thorough understanding of computer science and programming. Every Computer Science Education Week, Code.org organizes the Hour of Code™ to get kids around the world coding for at least 1 hour during the week, a mission close to our hearts at Launch. In our quest to make computer science education for kids more accessible than ever before, we are excited to announce that our coding and technology camps are available not only at Launch’s main location in Westlake, but at partner institutions throughout Austin! New locations include Upward Bound Montessori School (Round Rock area), Concordia High School (Pflugerville area), and Headwaters School.

Makey Makey is a microcontroller, which means it’s what powers IOT devices. These are devices that allow you to turn on your robovac with your cell phone, or speak to your digital assistant and turn on your lights.

Here at Launch, we’ll be rolling out new curriculum modules designed to teach kids the fundamentals of circuits, robotics, IOT, and programming micro controllers like Arduino. These projects will be available to advanced students in our after-school program as well as in an abbreviated form for our week-long summer camps.

Psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth defines “grit” as “perseverance and passion for long-term goals.” In her compelling Ted Talk on the subject of perseverance, she argues that a child’s grit and capacity for perseverance is a much stronger indicator that they will succeed in their education and professional careers. At Launch, we understand this grit as a supplemental educational skill to be developed along with any other.

CSS is the first step in incorporating these languages together.  The next step students will tackle is learning to write JavaScript to modify the other two languages, but a solid foundation in the other two languages is necessary to be able to create amazing and modern sites.
