Everything that the too thin blonde had gone through in her short life had brought her so much anger. Her emotions were volatile, and she had a penchant for getting her into trouble at this point. Kaisa was always more on the aggressive side, even before her seemingly good life was torn from her she had a habit of punching walls or getting into fights when she was more or less in need of blowing off steam. Nowadays, her anger took on a different approach. It wasn’t as self-directed as it once been. Instead, she was much more likely to find someone to hit.
She felt as though she had acted accordingly when she assaulted someone who was harassing another girl who couldn’t have been much older than her. Unfortunately, she went too far and ended up landing him in the hospital. She had been angry to begin with that day and went out, looking for someone to hurt. The man pressed charges even though she thought she had every right to do what she did. It was her first offense as an adult, and so, she’d been sentenced to anger management classes and group therapy to attempt to quell her anger.
Forest green eyes were dark as she walked into the group therapy room for the first time. He had her long blonde curls in a low ponytail, and her left hand was bandaged, like she punched a wall recently. She was slight, didn’t seem like she could hold her own in a fight with how petite she looked. With the cooling weather she wore and green and black plaid flannel shirt over a black tee and dark gray jeans. The girl really didn’t look much like someone who would likely be seen in a mandatory anger management group.
Kaisa’s jaw was tense as she took a seat in the circle and slouched in the chair, crossing her lean arms over her chest. She could feel eyes on her from a couple of others in the group and glared at them. Kaisa didn’t want to be there, and if she truly had a choice, she wouldn’t have been. It was only due to the prodding of her friends and legalities that made her go.
There was one person in the room who caught her eye. She noted his lean frame and height, along with his long black hair. Before she suspected he would catch her staring, Kaisa looked away, impatiently tapping her fingers on her arm. She was new there and wasn't sure if there were others there for the first time or not. She suspected she wasn’t the only one who was required to be there, but it didn’t make it any better in her opinion. Group would start soon, and she didn’t feel like she’d want to engage in whatever discussion would ensue. She mentally prepared to either check out or watch each member of the group while they spoke.

♠ Dull emerald eyes were glazed over, sick of the paperwork in front of her. She’d finished her third mug of coffee already and still couldn’t get herself to actually pay attention. Her mind was elsewhere as she mindlessly nibbled on pretzel sticks. Kaisa had been so zoned out that she didn’t react to his hand coming towards her cheek until he took the apple of it between his index finger and thumb.
“Hitsugaya-san!” Kaisa replied with a slight whine of surprise and indignation at the fact that he pinched her cheek. Pale cheeks tinted pink in embarrassment as she gingerly knocked his hand from her face, “how long had you been standing there?”
She didn’t want to admit to him that she really hadn’t noticed his presence as she had really been far too dazed.

P inches one of her cheeks sans remorse. " You're zoning out again. "

♠ The hatred she held for the man that towered over her gaunt, bloodied, and bruised frame ran so deeply within her. She had been weakened, tortured, starved, and yet her stubbornness kept her still breathing and fighting for her life. It wasn't lost on her that she should have been killed, that others that Quilge had kept prisoner didn't survive their interactions with him. Kaisa knew that if it wasn't for her spirit, her anger, and that seething hatred, she wouldn't still be there. She couldn't let herself give in or give up. She had too much pride and she was far too obstinate to allow herself to be killed by someone like him. The biggest part, other than just being recalcitrant, that kept her going was sometimes hearing the voice of her zanpakuto spirit in the beginning of her captivity.
How long had it been? Was it weeks or months at this point? She didn't know. All she knew was that she was so tired but she refused to just yield to his cruelty. He'd kept her zanpakuto away from her, physically keeping her from being able to touch her bonded sword. She ached to hold Heisenjou again, ached to feel the perfect fit of the hilt in her hand once more. There were still times of quiet she could speak with her zanpakuto, but they were so few and far between now she felt as though she were breaking in two. The emotional toll of barely hearing the one voice she'd come to rely on in times of need was great. She'd began to curl up in the corner of her cell when he wasn't around. She'd silently cried out to Heisenjou, needing to hear that calming voice she'd come so connected to in the years of being a shinigami.
Again he entered her cell. She was so small now, almost just skin and bones with a rag of cloth covering her. She no longer even had her shihakusho, that had been torn from her long before now. Kaisa refused to cower, refused to let him see the fear she felt. Instead she glared at him as he sneered down at her broken form.
He grabbed her by the scalp and the just barely growing hairs that were there after he'd shaved her head. A pained wince came from her, but those forest green eyes held her deep hatred and silent promise that once she was out of there, if he was still alive, then she'd kill him herself. She hated him, hated everything he stood for. She glanced at the cross of the Wandenreich, knowing all too well the pain it could inflict upon her. His words though, they brough her anger to a rolling boil.
"You could never break my bond with Heisenjou. Even as you try, she is still a part of me," Kaisa replied through gritted teeth.
Even as she could feel the physical and emotional distance of her zanpakuto, she refused to let go of the threads of their bond. She couldn't. She knew if she did, then she'd never make it out of his prison alive.
HIS EYES , COLD . the sadistic twitch of his pointed smile would feel like an executioner's axe to some . that his darkening grin would be the last to ever see . yet , this one ever caused him all the more trouble . an annoyance that should have been dealt with . or , that should have been the end of it , shouldn't it ?
were it not for the girl's stubbornness , and a damnable thing it was .
one hand grabs at her scalp ( her hair had yet to grow back ) , hauling her up with ease . the other , taking the cross of the wandenreich in his palm . looking nothing more than a trinket , but it was far more than that .
" I wonder if the bond between you & your blade has been severed yet , " and the silver cross gleams in the dim light . " given everything that you have endured at my hands , shinigami girl . "

♤ Kaisa had known that she should have been demoted and reassigned as soon as she was released from the Yonbantai. She’d expected as much. In her opinion, Kaisa should not even be allowed to continue even as a tenth seat. The young soul had been mentally beating herself up for the month she was kept in the Yonbantai for healing and observation. Hell, she barely managed to escape with her life when her two friends and fellow division members were slaughtered. She was so ashamed of her actions, of her prideful insistence that they could handle it. The hollow got away. The assignment was a failure and she had cost the others that were with her their lives.
She swallowed hard as she entered Ichimaru-taicho’s office. Her gaze was fixed on the floor and her shoulders were hunched. Kaisa assumed that this was it, this was where she’d be reamed for her actions and transferred out of the Sanbantai.
“I’m sorry to keep you waiting Ichimaru-taicho,” Kaisa murmured timidly.
The death toll had been unfortunate, and by someone’s intervention, at least one person had come back from Kaisa’s assignment alive. Unrest stirred amongst the members of the Third Division, and whispers drew questions of why she wasn't sent to the Thirteenth yet for her actions. Practically a demotion and isolation. Gin stirred his tea with the spoon as he stared at generic report from the accident, made of what words his Vice Captain was able to get out of the girl before the official one. He'd just finished it when he heard the girl in question call out. The generic report was tucked under another pile of papers, as a smile crossed his face and a kind-sounding voice called out.
"Come in Ranta-chan. I've been expecting you."

♤ Renji’s response to her age, had her emerald eyes widening in surprise. Yes she was young, but she had been through so much she felt decades older than she really was. Kaisa saw the consternation in his expression, saw how he almost held his emotions on his sleeve. She knew right then that he was regretting giving her the idea. Kaisa swallowed but her emotions were still raw. Her bottom lip quivered, fear seeping into her chest that he would make her go back to the place he’d found her in. Her lungs and heart felt as though they were freezing, afraid to go back. Kaisa was willing to do whatever she could to never return to that hell.
“I don’t care if it’s not easy… I will do what I can to get through the Academy Abarai-fukutaicho,” she replied gently, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”
“Seventy-two!?” Renji squawked. She was so young! She did certainly look young, especially compared to many of the working Gotei 13 soldiers, but he thought she was at least closer to 100. He was relatively young himself, barely 180, but she was so much younger than he’d thought.
He sighed. “Oh man, I don’t know if I’m willin’ to put such a young soul through somethin’ so…..” his words trailed off there, reluctant to say what was on his mind. After giving her hope, Renji really didn’t want to squash it, but after learning of her age, he didn’t know if he could follow through.
“This…. The Academy.. it’s …” he scrunched up his face, not knowing quite how to phrase it. “It’s not gonna be easy… is that somethin’ yer willin’ to go through?”

♤ The fight against Jin Kariya had her shaken to her core. She’d tried so hard to hold her own, but in the end the young soul was far from capable of coming out of that battle alone. She was so thankful that Bansui had stepped in when he had. If he hadn’t arrived, the soul knew her life would be forfeit. It had her still trembling. She would be scarred from the experience both physically and mentally. Even with the Kido master’s healing she could already feel the scars beginning to take shape.
As the man spoke, she didn’t look up. The timid soul seemed small, smaller than she was with how she held herself. Physically she was mostly okay. Mentally, she didn’t know. She wouldn’t know until she could begin to truly process the experience.
“I think I’m okay for a walk…” she murmured softly. Her voice telegraphed her shame, her fear, and most of all, just how weak she felt for needing to be saved.
Kaisa nodded, understanding that he may wish to either discuss the events with her or have her walk in silence with him. Either one had her on edge. She was a fifth seat and was a capable officer and yet, here and now she felt as though she was a child a recent graduate of the Shino Academy who had done something wrong.
continued from (x)
"Here... we are, safe."
Within the main hall of the Kido Palace, a pool of thick, oozing, violet energy spreads across the floor, and from it, two figures emerge; the first is Bansui, towering at first, but then hunching down into his usual crooked posture, and the second figure, is Kaisa.
Surrounding the two at first is a group of robe-clad individuals, members of the Kido Corps, who went to approach with the intent of checking Kaisa for any injuries or other afflictions, but Bansui holds up a gloved palm, and they all back away slowly
"Her wounds have... been treated, already," Bansui's low, gravelly, but somehow kindly sounding voice emanates from behind his mask, "please, return to thine duties, my lambs, and I shall... keep watch, on our guest, until her... comrades, arrive."
As the many members of the Kido Corps bow their heads to Bansui and then walk away, he turns to look down at Kaisa, and then languidly gestures toward a pathway that led out into a seemingly garden-like area.
"I trust thou is... alright, in the mental sense, along with the, physical? Let us... walk, for a while, until thy... Captain, or their designated... messenger, arrives for thee." // @codename-freya

♤ Those green eyes of hers were still watching the woman who stood not much taller than the too thin human’s 5’2”. She was cautious, very much so after everything she’d experienced in such a short amount of time. Her eyes spoke of someone who was still so young, yet had seen far too much for her age. It was the only thing about her that showed she wasn’t as young as she appeared. The teen knew she always appeared younger, more like a fourteen year old than the seventeen year old she was.
Kaisa had felt safer in the woods, away from people. It was better for her, she thought, even though it was dangerous. The blonde was human. She was aware of vampires, or at least what she could only assume, because of her close call with one.
The bruising on her pale skin was darkening, like they’d only started to appear on her pale skin. One bruise in particular that was forming from red marks appeared eerily like a handprint. Her injured wrists were clotted, and any scratches and scrapes she had were no longer bleeding as well. Kaisa knew she was hurt more than what appeared. She wasn’t exactly sure of the extent, but that wasn’t her concern at the moment. Survival and hiding were what she was focusing on.
“I can walk,” she rasped out. Her voice sounded hoarse and raw, like something happened or she was getting sick. She looked at the hand that Esme offered and swallowed hard, causing herself to cough. Kaisa coughed into the crook of her elbow, wincing, before gingerly reaching out and placing her small hand in the woman’s.
“If you wanted to harm me… I’m sure you would have already…” the girl spoke, almost inaudibly. From what she could tell, the woman she stumbled upon could have attacked her if she wanted to. It was a blessing in the teen’s mind that Esme wanted to help instead.
The girl's nod was subtle but noticeable, incredibly so with vampiric sight. Tentatively, Esme edged towards the girl. She wasn't sure what had caused her to be such a state; in fact, she reminded Esme of herself stood on top of that cliff overlooking Ashland. Getting up there had been no small feat, but Esme hadn't even realised the way branches and thorns had ripped both nightdress material and skin.
Esme paused when the space between them had been significantly closed. She maintained space between them, not willingly wishing to scare the girl more than she already was. Esme understood that no-one would willingly be in the shadows of the woods at this time of night— it's why she was so concerned.
Vibrant golden eyes scanned across the girl's skin. Esme couldn't see anything worse than grazes and bruising, but she wasn't able to feel the girl's limbs under her fingers. "Can you walk?" Esme asked, her head tilting to the side as her eyes met Kaisa's own. "I can't do much in the way of first aid out here, but I can take you back to my home and patch you up there? My husband is a doctor. If you need anything more specialised, I'm sure he can provide that for you." Esme paused, offering the girl her hand. "I promise I won't harm you."

♤ Eyes that matched the hues of the trees that surrounded them searched the woman’s face for danger. Her instincts warred with her. The woman hadn’t attacked her, didn’t look as though she would hurt Kaisa, but she feared what could happen. This was the second time in less than two months that she’d encountered what she could only logically assume was a vampire of sorts. The first time, she hadn’t been bitten, but she did witness what happened to her parents because of one of them. It made her fearful even with how unassuming the brunette was.
She watched as the woman dropped the animal’s carcass and wiped the blood from her lips. Her own bottom lip quivered, and she wrapped her arms around herself, unsure of her situation. She didn’t expect to run into anyone. Kaisa didn’t know if her aunt had notified the local authorities that she’d run away. She had no clue if this woman even knew that she had run away or if she was missing.
Kaisa swallowed hard, weighing her options. She wouldn’t be able to run from her, but maybe she would be safer here than where she’d come from. It wasn’t an easy decision, but she ended up nodding a little, accepting the help. Her hold on herself tightened, fearing the unknown. She parted her lips like she was going to say something, but nothing came out. All she hoped for was that she would be safe.
It was incredibly rare that she encountered anyone while hunting and feeding. Those few people she crossed could be compelled, but this girl had Esme considering otherwise. Usually Esme would catch people before they could catch her; their scent and the sound of twigs snapping beneath foot would notify her she wasn't alone. Esme wasn't entirely sure why she hadn't smelled or heard the girl, but now she had to navigate how she would proceed.
Letting the carcass of the deer fall to her feet, Esme straightened her spine while maintaining the distance between them. She could smell dried blood on the girl, see bruising across exposed skin even under the overcast night sky.
As a newborn, this girl would have barely survived the encounter. The first person to interrupt Esme whilst feeding had found her fangs in their throats. In some small way, Esme felt pride in realising just how far she had come in regards of her control.
All that remained between them other than the soft rustling of leaves, was the thudding of the girl's heart. "I won't, I promise," she replied, wiping at her mouth to try and lessen the girl's terror by removing any blood that might linger there. "Are you okay... do you need help?" Esme added after a moment of hesitation. "You look as if you need medical attention— will you let me help you?"

♤ Her eye twitched, irritated that her lieutenant and older brother figure was trying to make light of the situation. She smoothed her ruffled curls and narrowed those deep green eyes of hers at him. Kaisa was just worried, and he seemed to not be showing much care about his injuries. She chewed on her lip as he spoke, watching him and seeing if there was anything else she could do.
The look on his face softened her expression. She wasn’t mad at him. She was just not very good at processing her emotions without frustration or irritation showing through. That was something that the young soul needed to work on, but right now, her focus was solely on keeping Renji stable.
“Coffee, I’ll forgive you if you get me good coffee beans and take it easy until you heal,” she murmured, her formal tone softening as she laid a gentle pale hand over his.
Kaisa sighed softly and focused herself to administer more kaido to help hasten the healing of his injuries.
“Just next time, please go to the Yonbantai. I’ll promise I will go the next time I get hurt myself if you promise me that you’ll go.”
“Aw come on Kaisa… why do ya gotta be so formal with me, hm?” He reached out and patted her on the head like he always did, messing up some of the strands that he knew she so meticulously set. “Call me Renji like ya always do. I’ll even allow ya to call me nii-san.”
Despite his dislike of the nickname, since it was often used to tease him, he just wanted to hear that familiar warm tone just once more. The usage of his formal title gave the connotation that his injury was much more graver than he’d expected, and that somehow this would be the last time they’d ever see each other. A thought that he didn’t want to entertain.
He sighed, knowing that he’d let her down. A dull ache spread across his chest as he tried to squash those feelings down. Damn. Renji really hadn’t meant for it to come to this. His hand slowly removed itself from the top of her head, coming to rest lightly across his stomach.
“Will ya forgive me if I buy ya a months worth of pretzels or candies…?”

♤ The hint of a smile twitched at her lips, amused at how attentive he was to her answer. She wasn’t entirely sure why he had asked something she felt was out of the ordinary for the young captain. Kaisa’s smile widened to a grin as she heard his answer. That was a kind thought from Toshiro. He wanted to get some new chairs for his officers? She hummed in thought, believing him. There was a small part of her, niggling in the back of her mind, that maybe he was asking for some other reason. She didn’t pay it much heed.
“You know, if you’re serious about getting new chairs for your officers, it may behoove you to take a poll of what they prefer so that you can find one that suits most of them.”

S he scrutinizes him dumbfoundedly, it exemplifies so distinctly 'pon her countenance as if he had spewed the most unorthodox verbiage she's ever hearkened to. --------- A reaction he forthwith anticipated for his inquiry had definitely merited to be heeded as wholly out of normalcy - as a potential assertion of witticism to facilitate temperaments -- but alas, he had been stringently attentive, standing upright and patiently awaiting to ultimately acquire an answer which would positively service him in his currently fraught predicament. ---- Facial disposition depicting indifference inundated 'neath a shroud of earnestness. - She enunciates her selection of preference and his ears attend to each syllable until she oppugns the adolescent with her own segment of inquisitiveness. As if he'd disclosed to her the catalyst behind his nosiness. " ---------- I was merely seeking information to supplant those in my office if required."surely she won't detect his fallacy.

♤ The young soul grit her teeth, seething with anger as she was forced to her knees in front of him. She looked up, forest green eyes narrowed with hatred. Kaisa spat at him, the saliva landing just to the side of one of his boots. With dirt and blood smeared across her face and on her shihakusho, she didn’t show the pain she surely was in.
“I don’t take orders from enemies,” she growled, “let alone sadistic bastards.”
She wasn’t going to make it easy for him, and she would refuse to show him respect. He didn’t deserve it. Even without her zanpakuto, she would fight to keep her life and freedom.

♤ Everyone who saw her, knew how haunted the young soul was. There was no doubt about it that Kaisa was so stuck within her memories and trauma she didn’t know which way was up. It was akin to being lost within a forest with no way to find the path again. In fact, she was lost. She was all too lost and not sure what to do or where to do from here. Kaisa didn’t believe she should have even made it out of the Jail, let alone spared when so many shinigami had lost their lives within the war. She chewed the inside of her bottom lip, unsure of what she needed to do.
Kaisa listened carefully, not wanting to interrupt the Weaver of Squad Zero. Her green eyes widened, more than slightly unsure as one of the spindly limbs that seemed to be as much a part of Shutara as her own flesh pointed at her. She swallowed hard, intimidated by the gesture.
“I do not believe I deserve my position after everything…” she murmured, “please show me what I must do to no longer be weighed down by what haunts me.”
DEFIANCE BECAUSE OF DAMAGED . shinigamis had to endure the worst , be prepared for the worst ; but she stood in her scar tissue , both mentally & physically . shutara was no healer , but the sight alone was pathetic . [ her eyes narrowed as the young soul sought all but her gaze . ] poor thing , she must have been through hell & back . it was a marvel she even stood up . though broken , there were some benefits in training her , in teaching her that trauma could rebuild & recreate , not just destroy .
her shuttered voice makes shutara hum , shaking her head in brief disappointment before closing her eyes in thought . ❝ you are blinded by your horrors . it is time for you to step forward or be devoured by what haunts you . ❞ shutara spoke , her limbs shifting before one of them pointed directly to her forehead .
❝ how do you expect to protect & defend , when you cannot even do so for yourself ? ❞

Ic asks // always accepting
❝ I thought y'were marked off-duty, did cap'n Hirako send ya this way? ❞ He tilted his head at her, words posed as a mostly innocent query, but underneath it Gin spoke with a piercing tone -- hidden eyes saw well into the haunted mindscape of his fellow Shinigami standing before him. Whether or not she was sent by Hirako wasn't the issue here, his unspoken criticism was of the fact that he was ill company for someone of her trauma -- if she was so viciously guilt-ridden over her dance with death and potential breach of her loyalties to the Gotei 13 during the Quincy war, then surely choosing the company of the token ex-traitor Ichimaru Gin was in poor taste. But he supposed he could humor her approach if she merely wanted to vent her feelings at someone who would not gasp or sneer at the more troubling and darker words spewed. He'd not turn her away -- unless her visiting him seemed to turn toward condemning... which was not unheard of. Even as a reinstated captain, Gin's reputation had a tendency of tainting others' whenever they were spotted engaging with him at length. Whispers and stares persisted, two years were considered a blink for Shinigami, and his betrayal was fresh on their minds. Gin remained seated at his desk, he didn't seek to tower over her, but he did briefly dip his head toward one of the two chairs facing the desk as a silent invitation for her to sit if she wished. The pen in his remaining left hand was quietly stowed aside from the paperwork before him, his handwriting slightly less illegible this afternoon. Small progress. He opted for propping his chin up against the back of that hand, elbow leaning upon the desk. ❝ What can I do for ya? ❞
♤ Did every captain know that she had been marked as off-duty until further notice? Did they all know why? Had it been spoken of amongst other captains, or had it been that the report she’d given her captain was something that the others knew of. How much did they know? Kaisa swallowed, feeling as though she was caught red-handed doing something that she’d be in trouble for. A light pink blush dusted her pale cheeks, and she averted her green gaze from him. She hadn’t really spoken much of what happened, afraid of others knowing just how broken she’d become as a prisoner. Physically, she was mostly okay, but mentally, there were just so many things she was still just attempting to begin healing from. Kaisa hadn’t planned where she had been heading, but she found herself in Gin’s office, looking lost.
“Hirako-taicho still has me on mandatory leave…” the young soul responded, her voice quiet and ashamed that she’d fallen hard enough to be in this state.
All she knew was that maybe she could admit to Ichimaru what she was afraid to say to anyone else. He hadn’t been in her position, but she had a feeling he wouldn’t balk at some of the thoughts that had consumed her during those long, pain filled days and nights she had endured.
Kaisa tucked her short, ragged blonde locks behind her ear before they fell forward again. She was trying to keep herself steady. Her bottom lip quivered for a moment before she gingerly sat in the seat that had been offered. She put her hands in her lap and wrung them together. She was uneasy. It would be obvious to anyone who was even the slightest bit perceptive. Kaisa knew that Ichimaru was more perceptive than most, just like her own captain.
“I-” she started and stopped, staring at her hands, staring at the scars that littered the little bit of her arms that weren’t currently covered by her sleeves, “I… I don’t deserve the patience Hirako-taicho is showing me… I almost betrayed him just to keep my life.”
Kaisa finally managed to say. Her voice was so quiet and full of shame. She hadn’t fought in the war because she had been held prisoner. To make matters worse, she almost agreed to betray the entire Gotei 13 just so Quilge didn’t kill her. It was shameful that she found herself at that point.
“I don’t deserve to continue to hold my seat in the Gobantai… how do you cope with it?”

✨ I love Kaisa! I’m extremely biased, though, heheh, but I’m glad to see you’re back with her! She’s a very familiar character for me to see around, and I know her relationship with my muses usually is, well, awful. But she is an iron-strong lil gremlin of a girl & I’m glad to have met her ✨

// I don’t know if you know how much this means to me. My little gremlin has been around for over a decade and I cannot believe how much she’s grown and “matured” over the years as I’ve developed her. I love being able to throw her into situations that are traumatic just to see how she will either break or survive. I’m so glad that you’ve given me the chance to write with my not so sweet bean. Thank you ❤️
