“It’s okay, you can keep texting your girlfriend, I need to do a few things first.” Riley smiled as he walked into the room, flicking through the file he had been given on the boy. All of his previous physicals had been fine and thus Riley’s higher-up had given him the job to do. Putting the file down he finally turned back to the boy, extending his hand to him. “I’m Riley, resident intern and almost-doctor, are you okay with me doing this?”

Girlfriend. Val scoffed at the thought, but slowly finished and turned his attention to the voice. “Uh--yeah no problem.” His shoulders rose and fell and he set his phone down on his bag. He took the boy’s hand, giving a tight grip. “Valentine, where do you want to start?” Val took his hand back and offered a small smile.

Valentine sat on the hospital bed with his phone in his hands, just checking in with Astrid and making sure their plans for the holidays were set so he would get to see her. The door opened and he didn’t look up. “Just in to get my physical done before the next semester.”

“I’m totally listening.” Beth muttered as she finished scribbling out an equation on a whiteboard in front of her, stepping back to read over it, making sure she was correct. In stepping back she was able to look down at his paper. “You made a mistake, the correct answer is C, not B.” She pointed out, placing her near-full cup of coffee on his desk. 

“Of course you are.” The comment strung along with a roll of his eyes and as they reappeared he took another look at the test. Thankfully he’d had white out with him and was able to correct the honest mistake, barely breaking a smile as the coffee landed next to his work. “Okay smartass,” he chided playfully. “you missed a whole section of your equation.” He stood to cross, picking up a marker as he filled in the portion of minor information she missed. “Try again from this point, you’ll find that; while your answer is only slightly off, even the few points will make a difference in the next portion of the question.”

“Oh come on, you scare me? Right.” Val stood and stared down at her with an almost malicious smirk. “Lets go.”

“And for what would I care if I wasn’t?” His eyes closed. “Touché. What did you have in mind?”

“That depends, are you truly worthy of my attention?” she smirked and leaned towards the desk. “Besides I would think helping me quell my boredom would be far better than silently judging dumbasses.”

“Where did you get that idea?” His laughter came out course as he turned to face her. “I think you might be right, but it still has to get done.” Valentine leaned back in the chair with an annoyed huff. “So did you need something, or am I sating your bored needs while you avoid doing the work?”

“You seem to be enjoying yourself,” she said sarcastically. “I think you need a breather. I think I heard somewhere that reading too much stupid will make you loose brain cells.”

“I don’t know, a class,” she shrugged. She honestly only came because she was bored and he was the first person she encountered for the time being, “I haven’t exactly been to any quite yet.”

“You’re so helpful.” He rolled his eyes and leaned forward to bang his head once against the desk. “Fuck.” He didn’t really want to work on this for the rest of the day so possibly her being there would be less annoying and more helpful to his predicament.

She took a seat in the chair and leaned over to see what he was doing, “Oooohhh papers, now those are probably written by the idiots,” she chided playfully.

He kept on with his markings, crossing out parts where things were just unnecessarily added for what he assumed was length. “They most definitely were.” Once he’d finished with that paper he sighed gruffly and rubbed at his face, placing the stack to the side for later. “What class was it you needed prep for?”

“I can’t believe you think I’m an idiot, I’m almost certain I’m much more intellectually stimulating than anyone else on campus.” Ingrid rolled her eyes dramatically, “anyway I need exam prep work.”

“Stimulating is a word for it, yes.” He finally looked up from his work and motioned to the chair beside him. “Let me finish this and I’ll get you prep work. I really need to get through these.”

“Look, I completely mean to be rude with this, but what could you possibly want? If you can’t tell I’m a little busy trying to grade these papers before the semester is up and I’m going to need all of the silence and lack of idiocy I can get.” Valentine nearly growled.

“Are you even listening to me?”

Valentine was taken aback, knocked a few staggered steps backwards by the other. “Jesus christ, watch where you’re going.” A groan fell past as he went to place a hand to his head. “Fucking hell, I’d be better if I hadn’t just been charged into, what’s your problem?”

“Hey! Grab that-” Riley wasn’t able to finish his sentence because in his panic induced state about grabbing a dog that he wasn’t even sure why he was chasing, the boy had managed to run face first into an innocent bystander. 

“Crap, are you alright?”

A dramatic, hard pressed roll of his eyes came in response. “Fine, but only one.” Val shrugged. “Your present is hiding right now. Whether or not it’s a good one is left to determination of the receiver.” He looked up to smile at her, no teeth, but better than what she had gotten.

“Please don’t.” But still he hears the shutter of the camera and his gaze follows up. “You hate me don’t you?” Much like Astrid, Val found Beth to be a nice companion for various reasons. One of those, however, was not her joy of picture taking. “What do I have to do to get you to stop that?”

“You could give me one good one.” Beth pointed out with a smile and a shrug. “And a promise that my birthday present will be good.”

“Please don’t.” But still he hears the shutter of the camera and his gaze follows up. “You hate me don’t you?” Much like Astrid, Val found Beth to be a nice companion for various reasons. One of those, however, was not her joy of picture taking. “What do I have to do to get you to stop that?”

“Oh no.” Valentine shook his head defiantly and kept his gaze on the papers he was grading. “I don’t do pictures,” He groaned. “And you still use that name.”

“Yes I do. And I’m still taking the picture.” Beth smile as she took the picture and lowered her camera, looking at it on the display.

“Yes, darling, I have manners.” She countered with a smile and a shrug. At the command she turned her head to look to the left and raised an eyebrow. “Right, so is it the building with the million and one windows, the red brick, the metal one? There are a lot of buildings to the left darling.”

“Manners, right.” Val twisted his head in a rather odd way, causing the bones in his neck to crack, giving him a bit of relief on his pounding head ache. “Just past the brick.” He groaned. There was no way he was getting out of this either. “I’ll walk you past on my way to the gym, but don’t expect this to be a regular thing.”

Valentine was on his way to let out some steam, duffel bag over his shoulder and a water bottle in his free hand. “Darling?” He questioned the kid, his face displaying mild irritation. Not really from her but mostly from his classes. “Everyone always asks me.” He groaned. “Left.”

Rebirth was everything that Beth’s Grandpa had said it would be, or at least everything that the file she’d received on it said it would be. With one bag high on her back and the other in her hand she walked up to the closest person and tapped them on the shoulder, a bright smile on her face. 

“Hi darling, is there any chance you could point me towards the dorms?”

Val responded to the relative over dramatics by crossing his arms. “Trust me, it has nothing to do with my care for you. I just happen to know the answer to your obvious question.” He retrieved a cigarette from the pocket of his bag. “Valentine.”

“Then you do care about me getting to the correct place, how sweet,” she playfully put her hand over her heart. “Thank you,” she trailed off in the hopes of getting a name.
