Coerver Center of Excellence Soccer Skills Training is focused on Individualized Soccer Skills Training of 160 different soccer skills in a small group environment.
We emphasize perfection of the 1st touch on the ball, 1 touch finishing and passing, 360 degree field of vision, aerial control of the ball, controlling the ball with all surfaces of the body, turning and anticipating what comes next in the game. Coerver Coaching focuses on the development of Sense, Skill, Speed, Strength and Spirit in our Coerver Kids.
Coerver helps develop players who are confident and can play for whatever club or school that they choose because of their technical excellence both as collaborative teammates and creative individual players.
We do not have teams or leagues or tournaments and we work on your schedule so that you can improve alongside your team training for other organizations. Coerver tailors the training to the individual and works on the schedule of each family to help foster continual improvement.

39th time is the charm. Some times there is very little that a coach should say.
Today I had a new camper who was working on left-footed corner kicks. We were specifically working on the technique of bending the ball in to the back post.
There are 3 things that I try to focus on.
1) angle of approach
2) pivoting of the plant foot towards the goal after striking the ball
3) speed of the kicking foot as it contacts the ball on the side-that is furthest from the goal-line
These 3 things will fix most issues that are keeping the ball from going in at the back post. My role as a coach may be simply standing there and every 5 or 6 kicks, I might say one word "angle" or "pivot" or "speed". We had 38 fails in a row and who cares about those....but the 39th, he hit the back post side-netting. People need space for repetition, failure, and to develop discipline. In the end though, persistence pays off. It is key as coaches to remember that we may only need to say 9 words, our work is to put kids in an environment where they have 40 soccer balls, a goal to shoot on and space to fail, so that they can succeed.

When working with cones or agility flags, try to make only one touch to pass the obstacle and the next touch should change direction and beat the next flag or cone. Put one row a few yards apart and the next only a yard to force yourself to master the weight and angle of each pass and move.

Strength
I want to give a shout out to Messi and Neymar Jr. These guys are models to today's youth of strength. #coerverkids have strength. When Neymar takes 10 separate fouls in one game, he bounces up and keeps playing. When Messi gets fouled constantly by a rotation of players from any team he plays against, he just keeps going. Neither of these men (who are relatively light in weight and/or short in size compared to the athletes that beat on them and break the rules of soccer regularly as they do) want to stop doing what they love, so they keep going forward. This is what strength looks like.

#coerverkids defend with Persistence. I heard it from one of my campers today.
“No!” He yelled after the other kid took the ball from him in a 1v1 battle. Then he was right back after him. My father coached my youth team about 27 years ago with a gentleman that he just reconnected with a few weeks ago. That is the same thing that he remembered about me when I played for his team way back when. I still play now at age 41 and I play in the league with the 20 year olds. I can still be heard yelling, “No!” and going after the ball. #spirit never leaves you!

Spirit
I have been reaching out to many of my players as I have been getting involved more and more with Coerver Coaching. Notice that I do not say ex-players. The coach-player relationship is one that for me, is a commitment to always be there for players, as they proceed along their journey of life. I have been impacted by how successful and focused my players have continued to be. It doesn’t surprise me, but it has impacted me. My own son is not playing soccer in college (though he could have) but is successful in his relationships, in his career and in his studies as an architect. Another player has joined the Air Force and is going to get married soon. I spoke to another player yesterday who is enlisting in the military as well. These guys and girls may not be learning Cruyff turns from me anymore and they may not need me at all for a while, but it is so gratifying to see them taking the Coerver Kid qualities and using them in other areas of life. Spirit helps you as a friend, as a spouse, as an entrepreneur, as a student. The creativity that Coerver Coaching encourages fuels passion in players to become the best version of themselves. The confidence that Coerver Coaching inspires by allowing kids time to Master the Ball lets them take the ball on their own and go at players 1v1, or gives them the authority to make a choice to bring a partner in on the passing combination. As they go out there and start businesses, start relationships and become coaches themselves in whatever area of life. I carry with me such a great reward from having been (however small) a part of their lives.

As I was out last night preparing Picazo Field for Coerver Camps, I was about to hang my new soccer net up and saw this lightning storm coming. There are times for everything and this was not a time to get up on a metal ladder in the middle of a field! This got me thinking about soccer and life, as most things do :)
Is there ever a good time to get a red card?
I watch players who are in the middle of important soccer games and their team is down a goal. They get fouled, or sworn at, or bumped, or something goes wrong. The next thing you know, they retaliate verbally or physically and now they are thrown out of the game. Being one of the #coerverkids involves “sense”. Sense has to do with wisdom and it has to do with knowing what to do in any situation. Funneling emotions into more intense effort is a good thing. If you don’t play by the rules though, those emotions can work against you and now your team is playing a man down. As a coach, I will sometimes (in training sessions) make a bad call on purpose as a referee or change the score on the players in a game that has a consequence for losing (say it is 10 pushups to the losing team), then I will tell the players what I am doing because I want them to learn how to react and practice getting out of unfair situations. At the end of the session, maybe I do the pushups instead, not every time, so that they take the challenge seriously, but maybe sometimes. Maybe I let the game go a little bit longer until it is tied so no-one has the consequence. Practicing the “unfair” and practicing showing mercy to players are powerful forces that will prepare them for life and soccer situations.

There is a time and a place for everything. Lightning storm coming=not a good time to hang that new soccer net. Just got fouled in a game=not a good time to get a red card (or ever)
