Week 7 - Architecture
Universal design is a design that renders a product useful to everyone. The objective of universal design is to make any product as easy to use and comfortable to use as possible, so that it can work for anyone that tries to use it, regardless of their circumstances. This way the product will be utilized by more people, thus making it a more popular and successful product.
There are seven key principles to Universal design. The two that are most important are principles one and two. The first is equitable use. This means that the product is useful and marketable to people of all diverse abilities. The second most important is “Simple and intuitive use.” This design is easy to understand, regardless of the user's language skills, experience, current concentration level knowledge, or knowledge.
We are around objects that have been universally designed all of our lives.l We have used them to the point that they have become habitually ingrained into our brains. Some simple examples of products that we use every day that are universally designed are objects such as a door handle, computer mouse, a cup, a sharper, or a light switch. All of these things are universally used, and can be used by anyone regardless of there abilities or language.

Sherman Park State BankThe BMO Harris bank at 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave looks elegant when standing in front of the structure looking in. It was built in 1927 with a design that mimics the temple of Cella.

The Otto Sterverwald Commercial Building has six large pillars in the front of it, with a small balcony overlooking the street. It was built in 1922 and stone crafted to its picturesque perfection.

Edward Diederich House
The Edward Diederich House is my favorite so far. It has a yellow finish to its brick design, and also has two large gargoyles in the shape of lions at the front of the house. If I were to live in an old 1920’s house it would be this one.

This table showcases aspects that are portrayed in the Bauhaus. The idea is that wood should resemble wood and metal should resemble metal. This simple German idea is something that is still showcased today, while designer opt to portray their products naturally.

This form of art is considered to be a “Collage.” A collage is a form of art where the creator samples multiple pieces of art, or visually pleasing elements and mashes them together to create a new piece. This colorful design is directly correlated to the Dada movement. The Dada movement was a peace-loving, flowery movement that lasted until World War One, and entailed happy, peaceful forms of art.

Week 4 - Found Object
Yesterday I went to the playground because I had to babysit my little brothers. Walking to the playground I didn’t see anything that caught my eye as far as design. It wasn’t until we go to the Optimist park that I found the relatively new and well designed playground. This playground was like any ordinary place for kids to run and play on, it was build to accommodate children with special needs so they could enjoy it too. This playground had ramps up to every balcony and most structures that were build were expressible by wheelchair. It was interesting to see how much care had to be put into all of the structures to make sure that everyone would be able to play on it. I was thoroughly impressed with that I saw there, it wasn’t until I saw the swing set that I found my object. The swing est had normal swings that you and I could use which were easy to use by all, but it wasn’t that. The object was the special needs swing set that had heavy metal chains and a large padded seat so that any child who might not be able to push off the ground could ride in it. It was also equipped with extra seat belts and support so that the child would not fall out. The ground was also padded around the area of the swing set so that if any children were to fall, they wouldn’t injure themselves. It was impressive to see how everything that could’ve been thought of was. I really appreciated my trip to Optimist park.

Week 3 - Good Design
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good design is something that is created in such a way that it solves a problem. When it solves that problem, is does it in a way that is aesthetically pleasing and flies right off the shelves if it is trying to be sold. Over the years I have seen good designs and bad designs. What makes a good design to me personally is the question “Would this make me look cooler.” For me, if the product doesn’t get a good answer to that question then I don’t buy it.
Recently I was looking for a desk that I could place my computer on and be able to have extra room for things like printers and music equipment. After shopping around I could not find something that would solve my problem at hand. I also wanted a desk that how rolling drawers on the bottom of the desk so that I could slide a keyboard in and out. There was also no other place to find the solution to this problem. I finally decided to design and build my own desk to fit my needs. While looking for desks online, I did find some awesome pieces of design while I was searching though. The desk and chairs above had me very close to buying them because they were designed in a way that would definitely make my friends jealous while also fixing my problem. The final picture with the chair in it was the coolest piece of design that I found. It was a rolling chair that could also act as a desk. It even reclined and had a head rest which would make it the best desk/chair for gaming and doing pretty much anything on a laptop. The wheels on the bottom would make it possible to roll around the room without leaving the chair. This sort of design would make using a laptop and working on school work very easy.

Week 2 - Design Thinking
Design thinking starts by bringing us through the process that Edison used to create the light bulb. Design is basically creating something to fix a problem which is exactly what Edison did.  He also used a team of individuals with skill sets to help him. The article talks about the process to creating something new, and how during the later stages of the creation process design becomes the most important part. After making sure something works and does what is advertised, it is a big step to make sure it is aesthetically pleasing and feels good to the user. What would also go beyond aesthetics would be innovation for a better product all together. Doing this would take lots of inspiration which is an entire phase in the design process. The inspiration phase is all about finding something that could be improved or that is faulty, and being inspired to fined a way we could fix it, ethically.  When all of the phases are wrapped up, there is a finished product that can help large amounts of people like no other way before.

Week 1 - About Me
My is  Cole Cravillion.  I’m from small town Casco, Wisconsin.  I like to play sports like basketball and baseball.  I also play the guitar and the piano and I love to read. I enrolled in this class because it was required for my major but that doesn’t mean that I’m not excited to learn more about design! I have some experience with design, I recently built a desk in which I designed but other than that not so much. I would say that other people inspire me, the great thinkers that used to live and the characters from stories that aren’t real. I recently purchased a computer chair that was bought because of the design and ergonomics, I wouldn’t have bought it if it wasn’t designed well.
