You groaned as you started to find consciousness. 

"Fuck my life..." You muttered sitting up, holding your head. Your eyes start to focus and you notice that you landed in a tree...? 

You jumped down and looked at your surroundings. There were these yellow balls surrounding trees, making the thicket glow.

The ground was covered in dirt, not grass though. "Wait..." You widen your eyes. "Where's Hunter?!" 

You spun around and came face to face with Luz. You thanked the Titan you still had your mask-

"You're really attractive." Luz said humming. 

You touched your face. WHERE'S MY MASK?!

You press your lips together. You realized she held Hunter's staff. But...where was yours? The two of you heard a light whistling sound and ducked. 

You made your way to the edge of the thicket and saw Kikimora. 

"Ugh, I've always hated her..." You muttered.

Luz looked at you. "Really?"

"Yea- HEY THAT'S MY STAFF!" You whisper-screamed. "And the Golden Guard's mask!" 

Luz shushes you. Kikimora indeed had your staff and Hunter's mask. 

The same monster that attacked the ship landed in front of Kikimora- and she cooed in a soft voice, "Excellent work, my pet~" she rubbed its hand like snout. 

Luz covered her mouth, containing a muffled gasp. Your eyes widen and your mouth felt dry. Kikimora continued. She held up your staff and Hunter's mask to the monster's mouth.

"Now find the rest of the two and have yourself a nice little snack..." 

The monster nodded before taking the two things in its mouth. In an instant as the monster chewed, your staff and Hunter's mask was destroyed.

"No!"  You whispered.

Luz looked back at Hunter, worried. Then you. But you were too focused at the loss of your staff. You've had that staff since you were, what? Nine?

Belos had given you that staff when you were promoted to training with the future Golden Guard: Hunter.

That staff had been a gift and it's been through a lot with you. Now it was gone...

The red palismen Luz had showed up and chirped at Luz. She glanced at it before looking at you and Hunter.

"Don't worry," She told it. "I won't leave them."

Luz grabbed your arm pulling you to Hunter. She leaned down, firmly holding the staff. "This is the Golden Guard?" Luz asked.

"Yeah, so?" You replied, a little too defensively. You found the Golden Guard amazing, thank you very much.

Though you'd never tell him that. Don't want him to think you're a simp.

"You guys look like you could be students at Hexide..." She muttered glancing at you and Hunter.

"Really?" You asked raising your eyebrows. You suppose you and Hunter could. You were both sixteen, after all. But you weren't sure how to feel.

Hunter kept his face hidden from the human for as long as they had to interact. Heck, Luz didn't even know his name!

It didn't sit right with you how she now knew what he looked like. There was this squirming feeling in your gut and you felt angry. 

And that anger started to flare up when she started to lean into Hunter...as if to kiss him.

"Hey!" You started, irritated. "Get yo-"

Then she slapped Hunter. "Wake up!" She snapped.

He woke up quick enough and you held back a smile. The look on his face, though. 

You snorted and Hunter saw Luz. "Wha- YOU!"

She put her hand over his mouth. "SHH!" She shushed him. "You two are bad people!" Luz started glance at you and Hunter. "And I do not like either of you!"

"Ouch, man, no need to get so aggressive," You said, crossing your arms, pretending to be in pain.

Luz glared at you before turning to Hunter again. "BUT,  Kikimora is trying to kill you two and unfortunately, I'm too nice to let that happen."

It's quiet for a few seconds before Luz pulled her hand away abruptly. "BLUGH- ARE YOU LICKING MY HAND?!" She exclaimed disgusted. "I'm trying to help you guys!" 

She shoved her hand in Hunter's face, making you burst out laughing as Hunter shoved his hand back at Luz's face, pushing her away. "Why should I believe you?!" Hunter exclaimed angrily.

You held your stomach giggling because they are acting so much like siblings.

They got into this shoving-face fight when you hear a loud growl. You broke the up. "Shut up!" You hissed.

It goes quiet as they looked around.

Kikimora's monster came between the trees and you widen your eyes, frozen. Why are you freezing up at the sight of this monster? 

You cursed yourself mental. Move!  You tell your feet. Run!

You felt warm in your hand and a big yank in your arm. Hunter had jumped up, grabbing your hand and pulled you with him, Luz leading the way.

The monster reached where you would have been and found Hunter's left behind cloak. You should ditch yours, too...

You pulled off the cloak, throwing it to the side before Luz continued on, making Hunter pull you with him.

You walked through town, looking around curiously. Luz ended up following you and Hunter instead of the other way around. Hunter's hand held your firmly and you could tell he didn't trust Luz to be around you.

Which was understandable. After what happened on the ship. Fucking hell, Y/n, why didn't you use your fancy magic on Luz?

But did Hunter really have to hold your hand? Not that you were complaining; obviously you held his hand back happily. You still wondered. 

You glanced back at Luz who was smirking at you two. You looked at Hunter, whose face looked stormy.

She caught up with you guys and let out a breathy sigh. "Woo, man, Kikimora must hate you!" Luz said trying to make conversation. 

Hunter squeezed your hand and you got the message: Don't interact with the human. I'm angry.

He reminded you of that meme, 'no talk me, im angy' 

You decided not to push it, and swung your connected hands back and forth, ignoring the human and smiling because Hunter seemed to relax at the gesture. You thought you saw a small smile, but it vanished when Luz spoke again.

"Whoa. I haven't been out of Bonesborough that much...Latissa is cool-"

Hunter made an abrupt turn and Luz protests. "Wha- HEY!" She complained. She caught up with you two. "Where are you guys going?"

When both of you don't respond, she narrowed her eyes and said, "Hey, man, I just saved your lives! The least you could do is tell me your names!"

Hunter made a grunt, giving Luz the stink eye before walking faster. You made your way to a bunch of coven scouts. 

Hunter let go of your hand and stood taller. "Scouts, direct us to your communications room." He said in a commanding voice. 

You smirked. Hot. You froze. Wait...I didn't say that.

He showed the tattoo on his wrist as you mirror his actions. "I need to contact the castle immediately."

The guards looked at your tattoos and snorted. "Cute. I didn't know kids your age were still into temporary tattoos."

The other spoke. "Yeah, show us your badge number."

You noticed Hunter was getting worked up so you spoke for him. "He's actually your superior, and he can prove it. Human, give him his staff!" You said to Luz. 

She looked at the staff before holding hit behind her. You and Hunter stare at Luz in shock.

"It's a little late for you kids to be outside." The second guard said, his voice arrogant.

The first guard turned away. "Yeah, go home before we call your parents." And with that...they left.

Ooh, if your staff wasn't eaten by that monster, you would have hit them so hard with your magic-

You felt your arm get yanked again and suddenly you were running after the human. Ah, yes. Let's go kill that human because this is all her fault.

As the three of you ran, Hunter knocked down a cat. "Hunter!" You protested and stopped. "I'm so sorry," You said helping the cat up. You grabbed his basket and put his fish in it. 

As a thanks, that little pussy scratched your face. "You bitch!" You snapped. You kicked over the basket and walked off holding your face. Ugh, so rude.

You ran in the direction of the voices. You heard Luz's teasing voice.

"Come on, Golden Guard~" She teased. "Don't you know some levitation spells?"

You felt your face heat up and you ball your fists. Don't get mad, Y/n. She doesn't know. You told yourself.

Hunter's didn't respond, making her sound actually serious. "Are...Are you powerless without this?" She pointed at the staff.

Hunter turned to walk away and saw him run back, and jump on different things near the building, and you watched him land on the roof. She shot magic at him a few times.

So fit, dang. You shook your head. No. Stop. Not the time.

"B-Back up!" She said shaking. "Or...Or else!"

You climbed up the roof and saw her. She was on the building next to the one you were on.  You ran forward and jumped across the space between the two buildings and landed behind Luz.

She didn't notice.

"Or else...what?" Hunter said, his voice calm as he started toward Luz. "You gonna blast me to bits?" He chuckled. "Nah, you're too nice for that."

You smirked, coming up closer from behind Luz as she tried to back up. "Fly away?" You question softly. She jumped startled and saw you. "Uh uh, you know you can't do that either, because you'd be leaving behind your precious palismen.~"

Hunter crossed his arms, smiling slyly. "You don't tend to think things though, do you, human?"

Luz started to sweat when there was a loud roar. All of you turn and saw Kikimora's monster land in front of the headquarters.

It had the palismen nest!

"So, Kikimora was after our catch?" Hunter murmured, walking to stand next to you.

You nodded once staring at the huge monster a few feet away.

Luz smirked and pointed Hunter's staff at you two. "Seems like none of us want her to win right now," She said quietly. "Soooo, let's work together to take back those palismen!"

Hunter glanced at you with a bored expression. He looked back at Luz, crossing his arms. "Then what?" He asked, irritated. "You think we'll just let you walk away with them?"

Luz grinned. "MAYBE, you won't have a choice!" She started to spin the staff with one hand. "I'm more formidable than you think!" She loses balance and almost drops the staff, catching it in the nick of time. She laughed nervously.

You snort as Hunter said, "I doubt that." He closed his eyes before sighing. "But...Fine. A truce till then."

You raised your eyebrows. 

"You good with that?" Hunter asked, looking at you. 

"Yeah, just don't start making out with her out of nowhere." You said turning away to look at the monster. 

You didn't like this. But who are you to judge? This truce could help Hunter get the palismen for your guys' mission.

"Y/n, that's fucking gross." Hunter said disgusted.

You felt relieved at that response. "Hey, only a joke." You faced them and Luz held out her hand to Hunter. 

"Truce!" She said grinning. Hunter looked away from you to look at Luz and watched her hand for a second. 

He let out a sigh, reaching for it. Luz lifted her hand up and put it behind her head. "Heh heh, too slow~"

She laughed before turning around and running. Hunter groans and pulled your arm. "Let's get this over with..." He muttered.

This is haunting, tragic, sad, and nightmare fuel, no matter how many times I watch this scene. 

Every single Golden Guard was like Hunter, they were a person, they had their own thoughts, feelings, goals, and relationships. And they were thrown away like trash, left to rot after being deemed a “failure.”

How many of them were not quite dead when they hit the ground after being thrown off the bridge, and died alone in agony, in a sea of corpses? 

There’s no doubt in my mind this isn’t even all of them, some were probably killed in different locations. 

It’s scary think how easily this could have been Hunter’s fate if things had gone differently. 

I sincerely hope this gets addressed in season 3 somehow.

"Titan, Hunter this is so boring!" You complain. You were flying for about an hour.

"If you're so bored, then why don't you actually look around for the palismen nest, Y/n?" Hunter said frowning. 

"Maybe I will." You said walking away from him, and to the edge of the ship. You were hovering over the Hexside school grounds. You look around for a second before pointing at the Grudgby field. "Hunter, there it is!" You said.

Hunter landed and you jumped off the edge using your staff to teleport side to side, making sure you landed on the ground lightly. 

You faced the palismen nest and heard a faint snore. You shrugged, deciding that it was your imagination.

"Y/n, are you alright?" Hunter called down.

You gave a thumbs up. "Yeah! Let me hook this up to the ship and I'll come up!"

"Alright!"

You jumped up and pulled down the hook, attaching it to the nest. You teleported up the ship and fell short. You grabbed hold of the edge of the ship. Hunter came over and quickly pulled you on the ship. 

He touched your back. "Are you alright?" He said leaning forward to see your mask.

You smiled behind your mask. "Yes, thank you for asking, dear Hunter. So polite!" You laughed. "You worry about me a lot."

He rolled his eyes. "Oh shut up." He grunted. "If you didn't almost die, like, all the time then maybe I wouldn't worry."

You skipped behind him as he made his way to the helm. "You worry about me, Goldilocks? You admit it?" You tease.

Hunter turned his head to look at you, narrowing his eyes. Though, you couldn't see. "Even though you're a pain in my ass, I actually care about you. You're, like, my best friend. Excuse me for worrying about you."

You raised your eyebrows. "Wow, you got real there, Hunter." 

He didn't say anything, he just made the ship fly higher. You put your arms around his neck making him tense. You hugged him, putting your head on the nape of his neck. Hunter relaxed but kept quiet.

"I care about you too, Hunter." You said in a soft voice that if anyone else was on the ship, only he would hear it.

"Good." He said, his voice cracking slightly. You lifted your head and put your chin on his shoulder, though your arms were still around his neck. 

"So, back to the castle?" You asked. 

"Yeah, if things go smoothly." Hunter said, moving some levers.

"Then we can cuddle, right?" You questioned hopefully. 

The thing you had said a second ago had made Hunter soften, so he sighed. "Sure,"

You squeezed him in your hug before letting go. "Bet!" 

You moved to the side of him. "Do we have a mission tomorro-" You stopped. You heard a thud and you turned your head, your eyebrows furrowing. "Uh, Hunter?"

"Yeah?"

"Did you hear that?"

He looked at you, confused. "Hear what?"

"Um.." Your voice trailed off as the ship became quiet. 

"Y/n?" Hunter touched your shoulder. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah." You said shaking your head. "It must have been my imagination." 

Hunter hesitated before turning back to the helm. "Alright."

You walked to the edge of the ship and peered down. Your eyes widen. It's that human girl, Luz!

Luz opened her mouth, holding a leaf.

"H-" You start before she hit you across the head in a panic. She caught your unconscious body and silent put it on the ship ground before hopping on the ship. 

Luz creeped across it and ended up right behind Hunter, oblivious to everything that just happened. 

She slammed her leaf glyph on Hunter's back. "Hiiii-yah!" Luz yelled.

Hunter turned his head. "Huh?" He saw you on the ground and widened his eyes. "Y/n- WHoA-!" There was an explosion and he flew around the ship. 

"AHHHHHHHHHHHH!" 

He flew around like a balloon for a second before being thrown off the ship. She smiled nervously. "He'll be fine!" She said. 

Luz looked around. "Okayy, how do I land this thing?" She muttered. "Hm..."

After a few seconds she heard, "Oh, you just pull that cord above your head."

She looked up and saw the cord. Luz lit up. "Oh, thank y-EH?!" She turned her head and saw Hunter: back and not at all hurt.

"Hiii~" He sang, a smile in his voice. He raised his staff as it started to glow. Luz was thrown back as rope tied around her. 

Her back hit the metal cabinet a few feet away from your body. Chill, you're not dead. But, your dumbass decided to wake up now.

You sat up holding your masked forehead, groaning. You saw the human tied up and then Hunter on the front edge of the ship.

"Hey!" She snapped angrily. 

Hunter brushed himself off while saying, "Good to see you too, Human." He saw you were awake and breathing and seemed to relax slightly.

"Why are you guys stealing palismen, Golden Guard?!"

"Frankly," Hunter started before teleported and stopped face to face with the human. "You should be more concerned about yourself! For the crime of...rocketing me off my own ship and attacking the Silver Soldier, you'll be locked in the dingiest cell in the Conformatorium for the rest of your sad little life!" He hissed.

"Pffft, whatever, I already broke out there, like, twice." Luz said rolling her eyes, smiling.

Hunter turned toward you. "THEN, we'll just zap you to dust and throw you into the sea." He said. "That better?"

Luz pouted. "Hmgh."

"Good," Hunter said lightly and held out his hand to you. "Is your head okay?"

You took his hand and he pulled you up. "Yeah. Just a little dazed. Thanks," You looked at the human who was watching you two with interest. "I knew I heard something..."

"Well, it's okay. Come on, we need head back to the castle." He pulled you to the front of the ship, gripping your hand lightly.

He stopped at the helm and you said, "Golden Guard, I'm fine." You said grinning. 

"I didn't even notice you were hurt until that human shot me off the ship..." Hunter said glaring at the helm. "What kind of frie-...partner..am I?"

He seemed to remember the human was there.

You furrowed you brow. "A great one! You didn't hear me fall, anyone wouldn't have known." You said letting go of his hand to touch his arm.

Hunter glanced at you. "Are you sure you're okay? No concussion?"

You laughed and said, "Yeah! I'm fine. A little headache, but I'll live."

He set his staff to the side before grabbing the helm. The human struggled as it became quiet on the ship.

Out of nowhere, Luz said, "Say, how did you get back on the ship so fast?" She asked. You heard squeaking noises and turned to see her draw a circle.

"Staff~" He sang pointing at it. 

"Cool."

You seemed to realize a little too late. Ice shot at him and the staff. You pulled Hunter to the side as his staff took the hit and flew off the ship.

"NO!" He shouted. Hunter shrugged you off and turned to Luz. "Ohoho, Human, it'll take more than that to thwart my mission!"

Just as he said that, there was a loud growl and the ship shook. A monster landed on the roof and the ship shook more violently.

You fell back into the side of the ship, holding the edge as Luz fell sideways and Hunter fell to the floor.

"What is that?!" Luz yelled.

"What's happening?!" You shout over the roars. 

"I don't know!" Hunter shouted back trying to reach you. He kept falling to the side from the shakes and struggled to get up multiple times.

There was an extremely loud roar before the monster ripped off the cloth roof keeping them in the sky. 

The ship was thrown out of the sky as you all screamed. 

"AHHHHH!" Hunter yelled.

"WAAAAAAAAA!" Luz screeched.

"OHHHHH FUUUUCK!" You yelled.

"Hunter! Get your musty hands off my book!" You laughed reaching over the Golden Guard to grab your favorite book: The Good Witch Azura.

"As soon as you take off my mask, Y/n!" He gave you a grin, and you narrowed your eyes at him.

"Hmm..." You thought about it for a minute. "But I pull it off better than you~" You giggle. 

He feigned offense. "No!  You take that back!" He smirked glancing at the book, flipping through the pages. "I don't know what you see in this book, it's basically a fanfiction of our world."

You snatched the book from his hands. "It has good plot!" You gasped offended. 

Hunter took this chance to take his mask off your face. "Yoink!" 

You flushed. "Hey!"

"You got your book back, I got my mask back!" He stuck his tongue out at you and you poked it, making him protest. "Gross! I don't know where your finger's been!" 

You laughed and he wiped his mouth eyeing you. "Don't you have your own mask? The silver one?" He asked sitting on your bed.

"Yesss, but your gold one is cooler!" 

"You're so weird, Y/n."

"Y/n, get up, we have to go on a mission." Hunter poked you with his staff and you groaned opening your eyes. 

It was dark outside. "Hunter, I literally just closed my eyes...why are you waking me up?" You said, your voice tired with sleep.

"Like I said, dumbass. A mission. We need to get extra palismen for the Emperor, and I saw that it's palismen adoption day at the school Hexside."

Your eyes land on him and focus. He was in his full uniform, mask and everything. "Right, right."

You sat up stretching. "Ughh...Hold on let me get on my clothes. Wait outside."

He nodded and made his way to the door. You stopped him. "Hunter, you owe me cuddles once we get back, you know, for waking me up this late." 

He blushed and looked at you. "What? Why? It's literally your job!"

"Just letting you know!" You said shrugging. He rolled his eyes and turned.

"Fine. Only for a few minutes though."

You watched him shut the door and pulled on your uniform and grabbed your staff. You made your to the door and opened it.

There Hunter was: Standing in front of your door.

You closed it and tapped his shoulder. "Hey, Goldilocks. I'm ready."

He groaned at the nickname. "Y/n, you know how much I hate that nickname!" He complained as the two of you walked down the hall. "It references a human fairytale. I don't even know the story, either!"

"Hey, you called me dumbass earlier!"

"Because you asked a dumb ass question." He replied simply.

"Yeah, yeah. So are we gonna teleport to the thing?"

Hunter looked at you. "It's a whole palismen nest, dumbass. We can't teleport a whole nest from there and back. That's why I requested a flying ship, so we'll be taking that."

"Oooh, a flying ship? Does this make us pirates?" 

He started to walk faster. "Do NOT mention pirates in front of me, Y/n!"

You giggled and caught up with him. "Oh riiiight, the human girl really gets on your nerves, huh, Hunter?"

He climbed aboard the ship and said, "Very much so."

You hummed as he helped you up on the ship, taking your hand, and making sure you didn't fall. You teased him, saying, "Such a gentleman!"

He narrowed his eyes and let go of your hand.

You stumbled backward. "Wha- HEY-"

He held his staff and a red glow caught you. You could tell behind his mask, he was smirking. "Oh, sorry, Y/n. That wasn't very gentleman-ly, was it?"

"Oh shut it." You grumbled. 

He dropped you gently on the ship and you land on your feet with a thud. "Let's get going then," He said smiling.
