I came across this beautiful cover of Tiny Light by 白駒hakuba, who sung this as Hanako. They're so good that I first mistook them as Megumi (Hanako's va) until I looked at who did the video.
youtube
Anyway, there's a bit of a speaking segment in the beginning and there's no English subtitles to that part, so I went ahead and translated it using my very rusty Japanese skills.
My translation, explanations, and blunders along the way under the cut. I would love a second opinion from someone with more experience!
Translation
First of all, here's the script in all forms. I ain't no recipe cooking blog: if you wanna know what it says and yeet then I'm here for it. Though if you're a Hananene shipper, you might find some of my later mistranslations to be very interesting (note, read that as painful).
REMEMBER TO TAKE THIS TRANSLATION WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.
人なんて簡単に死んじゃうんだからさ Hito nante kantan shinjaun dakarasa
People die so easily, you see
そんな妄想しなくても、八尋には俺がいるじゃん son na mōsō shinakute mo, Yahiro ni wa ore ga irujan
Even without that delusion, Yashiro has me
君が受ける呪いがおれが最低限にしてあげる kimi ga ukeru noroi ga ore ga saiteigen ni shite ageru
I'll minimize the effects of the curse on you
Explanations
Something important to note about this cover before I go deeper: Japanese is not the singer's first language as per their comment in the video's info section. Anyone who has ever dipped their hand in translation or played the Google translate game knows what this means- there's a potential that even with their lyrics, it may be inaccurate to what the artist truly meant to convey. This also means that we're twice removed from the true source material with me trying to translate this into English. I think their native language is Chinese, but what throws me off is that they don't have a Chinese translation in their subtitles and therefore I don't have access to the source and no way to confirm it. Anyway, onto the lines!
人なんて簡単に死んにじゃうんだからさ Hito nante kantan shinjaun dakarasa (人-hito-people) (簡単-kantan- easily) (死-shinu-death)
What gives this line its flavor is the だからさ (dakarasa) at the end. Google translate directly translates this whole line as simply "people die so easily", but I found it hard to ignore (dakara) because on it's own, that often translates to "because" or "since" or "like I said". In other words it's subjective. Since I think Hanako is singing to himself here and not to Yashiro directly, I went with "you see" as a way to express that kind of melancholy vibe.
そんな妄想しなくても、八尋には俺がいるじゃん son na mōsō shinakute mo, Yahiro ni wa ore ga irujan (妄想-mousou-fantasy/wild delusions) (八尋-Yashiro) (俺-ore- I(male))
This is the most difficult line for me because of the first half of the sentence. At first you'd think it'd be pretty cut and dry- "without that delusion", but when I try to piece with the previous line "people die so easily", my head gets frazzled and suddenly I'm trying to unscramble what Hanako is trying to get at here. I'm almost certain he's referencing Yashiro's optimistic belief that life can keep going and will go on even when someone dies, but the thing about Japanese is that they give you everything and nothing at the same time when it comes to context.
I don't think I'm justified in changing it from that direct text and putting down "Even if (she) doesn't believe that, Yashiro has me" because I'm not that confident in my skills here.
君が受ける呪いがおれが最低限にしてあげる kimi ga ukeru noroi ga ore ga saiteigen ni shite ageru
(君-kimi-you) (受ける-ukeru-receive/sustain [damage]) (呪い-noroi-curse) (最低限-saiteigen-effect)
Now this line was the most direct despite me not knowing if Hanako said "a" or "o" or "u" in "ukeru" and spending 45 minutes desperately trying to input the kanji for "noroi" (did I ever mention I suck at writing kanji? I do. Reeaall bad). It's straight up what it says. "I'll minimize the effects of the curse on you."
And here we are. I did notice that the song has English subtitles after this so I didn't bother to do the rest. And now to the (other) fun part!
The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly (Crying)
The funny thing is, when I found this cover I originally heard it through another video- the hour long version posted by a completely different user. The only subtitles were auto-generated Japanese and only half of the comments knew it was actually a cover that was voiced by someone other than the original VA.
I really wanted to know what he was saying, and though I can get a few words here and there without looking up the words, there are also some pretty complicated words that my teacher didn't cover in school, like "curse" and "effect" (do you see that kanji?). It also didn't help that it was pretty late at night/early in the morning and I was already tired.
That being said, like an idiot I didn't bother to look at the info section to find the original video until I was near the end and auto-subs were trying to convince me that Hanako literally said "ok" halfway in. He sure didn't, and nothing is okay in this situation; even more so if you go by what I thought I heard and not what he actually said.
First line was actually pretty by the books. Other than the mixup of 一 and 人, auto-subs wrote the line down okay. Google translate was my go-to as a starting translation so I'd pop the kana in there bits at a time while the song played at .5 speed.
At this point I got "people die so easily". Okay, fair enough Hanako. Not gonna argue on that one. A legit thought.
Then I get to line two and it's a disaster.
It was partway into this line that I realized that the auto-subs couldn't keep up the pace and thought that Hanako said nyan of all things. From there I abandoned ship and tried to go at it by listening. Here's where things get kind of juicy.
Now, I was able to get part of the translation correct thanks to the sub's partial efforts and my best guesses and limited vocab- "Even with(out) these delusions, Yashiro_______". Somehow I thought that the sentence ended in "Yashiro ni mo ore ga ii deshou." I tried to edit particles to try to make more sense of it as well, resulting in a butchered translation. Totally off, but it resulted in the translator spitting out something like:
"If Yashiro doesn't believe that, then that's good for me too."
Which if you have a galaxy conspiracy brain like me, you'd think that's Hanako saying "It's okay if you don't think you can die because I like it when you're happy" in his own little tsundere way.
BUT IT AIN'T NOTHING COMPARED TO THE (totally off base) LAST LINE
At this point I know I'm not getting anything accurate, but I figured fuck it, I'll finish what I started and find out if I can find a better source afterwards.
Following my ears and partial hints from the poor subs I get something like:
"If you can't do it, then I'll take care of you."
Which really hits different if you're caught up to the later manga chapters and doritos give you chest pain.
This is a lesson that translating definitely takes research and proper source materials, and that Google Translate likes hurting people when it's able.
Thanks for joining me on this wild ride!

I've got theories for DAYS
I just got into the JSHK fandom by watching the anime, then reading the manga, then watching the anime AGAIN, and the musical of all things...
I'm in deep. And now that I'm writing fic about it, I'm referencing the materials and finding all sorts of little hints and breadcrumbs and such. Here's my list of theories, questions and possible scenarios:
Nanamine Sakura might be the old seventh mystery "Hanako-san"
Tsukasa could be Hanako's yorishiro, but so could be whatever that key is hiding
Mitsuba's yorishiro is probably that garden club record book, but I don't think that would have been the same for human Mitsuba
Yashiro, don't diss that moon rock, you probably gave it to him
Katakuri, bro, who exactly are you?
Natsuhiko, bro, are you dying or are you an exorcist?
What if Yashiro became an Eighth Mystery?
What if Kou became an Eighth Mystery?
