2023 Personal Awards: HONORABLE MENTIONS (Part 2)
07. David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah, as “Dom” and "Viv," in Rye Lane (streaming on Hulu)
If Raine Allen-Miller's effortlessly charming rom-com Rye Lane is anything to go by, David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah are the most charismatic and most adorable human beings... on the planet, maybe? They spend the vast majority of the film together, building a rapport and sense of intimacy over the course of a day, and it's virtually impossible to disentangle their performances from one another. Their chemistry is electrifying: Oparah wisely sidesteps any potential Manic Pixie pitfalls by embracing Viv's messiest, most human impulses; Jonsson is exceptionally good at being heartbroken, and his deep, inherent charm is the engine that keeps the film going. I'm not saying these two young actors are solely responsible for Rye Lane's success – Allen-Miller's direction and the script are too good for that – but it's hard to imagine the film working nearly as well without them. Every part of their relationship is thoroughly believable, equal parts funny and touching, and their shared karaoke performance of Salt-N-Pepa's "Shoop" is one of the most joyous things you'll ever see. More from Raine Allen-Miller! More from David Jonsson! More from Vivian Oparah! More more more!
08. Tobias Menzies, as “Don,” in You Hurt My Feelings (available to rent on demand)
If you've been lucky enough to see Nicole Holofcener's gorgeous 2013 film Enough Said, you know that she and Julia Louis-Dreyfus work extremely well together. The ten-year gap between their last partnership made me extremely excited to see her latest, You Hurt My Feelings, and while Louis-Dreyfus (one of the best actors alive by any metric, right?) is terrific as Beth, the film works largely because of her relationship with her husband Don, played by Tobias Menzies. Their chemistry is beautiful, deeply lived-in and easy and affectionate and funny. The film's central conflict might be about Beth's ego, but Don is just as much the film's protagonist. He's so, so good, and he has an amazing face that communicates so much with so little. It's one of the quietest performances of the year, but his work is so funny and so moving. The entire film is a real treat, and I wish it didn't get so drowned out in a year filled with so many heavy hitters.
09. Cara Jade Myers, as “Anna Brown,” in Killers of the Flower Moon (streaming on AppleTV+)
There are dozens of performances (literally) in Killers of the Flower Moon that are remarkable for one reason or another, and while the astonishing Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro have gotten the lion's share of attention (and the Oscar nominations), I wish more people paid Cara Jade Myers her due this year. Myers plays Anna, one of Mollie's sisters who are brutally murdered during the Reign of Terror, and while JaNae Collins and Jillian Dion also do strong work as the other sisters, Myers gets the most to do. Anna is rebellious and outspoken and falls into alcoholism in the wake of her mother's death and at the manipulation of De Niro's Hale. It's a tricky role, one that Myers pulls off with ease. Aside from how horrific the events of the film are, it's a damn shame to see her leave the film purely from how electric her screen presence is. I hope we see much more of her in the future.
10. Teyonah Parris, as “Yo-Yo,” in They Cloned Tyrone (streaming on Netflix)
I've been all-in on Teyonah Parris since her first appearance on Mad Men and her wonderful leading performance in Spike Lee's Lysistrata adaptation Chi-Raq. Juel Taylor's terrific debut sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone gives her a role that lets her shine: Yo-Yo, a sex worker employed by Slick Charles, played by a hilarious Jamie Foxx. Parris essentially becomes one of the film's leads as the twisty plot begins unfolding, and she utterly commands the screen. Her comedic timing is impeccable, her chemistry with her castmates is a joy to watch, and she's cool as hell. They Cloned Tyrone is truly one of the most entertaining films of the year, and Parris is a huge part of its success.
11. Rhea Perlman, as “Ruth Handler,” in Barbie (streaming on Max)
There's a lot about Greta Gerwig's Barbie that's hugely ambitious, but the mid-point introduction to the ghost of Ruth Handler, the woman who created Barbie in the first place, might be the film's biggest swing. In the hands of the great Rhea Perlman, Handler immediately makes a huge impression. Perlman brings a deep, effortless warmth to her performance, an almost maternal glow in the way she talks with Margot Robbie's Barbie. The emotional wallop at the end of the film essentially becomes a four-way pileup between Robbie (who is exquisite), Billie Eilish's ballad "What Was I Made For?," Gerwig (in her script, co-written with Noah Baumbach, and her direction), and Perlman. I'm convinced she's Barbie's secret weapon: yes, it's extraordinarily funny, and "I'm Just Ken" is a blast, and America Ferrera sold the hell out of her big monologue, but without Perlman, the film simply wouldn't soar the way it does. "Take my hands. Close your eyes. Now feel."
12. Cory Michael Smith, as “Georgie Atherton,” in May December (streaming on Netflix)
Even beyond the triple whammy of Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, May December had one of the strongest casts of the year. Just about every performance is pitch-perfect, from the one-scene wonders to the teen actors playing Melton and Moore's kids. As Moore's estranged son from her first marriage, no periphery character leaves a stronger impression than Cory Michael Smith. Smith, a regular Todd Haynes collaborator at this point, utterly nails this deceptively tricky performance: in a precariously short amount of time, he manages to be both hilarious and devastating, manic and pitiful. He conveys his profound trauma in such a magnetic, disarming, and haunting way. He's a tornado who rips through the film, turning it completely sideways in just a few short moments. It's truly incredible stuff.
