sometimes you go down the rabbithole of online kink so far you have people being like “you think inner ear oviposition is a ‘weird’ kink? wait until you hear the nasty shit i, a real pervert, am into” and blog posts that are like “it’s so hard to find someone to dig a nine foot deep hole with when all the doms i can find want to dig a five foot deep hole max :/“ and then you remember that a sizeable portion of the population consider liking anal to be freaky

i think one thing that gets missed in discussions of like. “okay depiction of abuse/problematic dynamics” where the person is on the side of “it's fine to depict problematic things as long as the victim is clearly traumatized/not enjoying it” is that a part of the way in which abuse functions is by changing what intuitively feels good or bad to a person, that is to say, why people stay in abusive relationships is bc your brain can be wired, as a result of sustained trauma, to only feel comfortable or at-home in such situations, and to not recognise that anything is wrong in the first place. that is how conditioning and grooming work, it's how people stay in awful situations for years... and how do you depict that? an abusive relationship is still a relationship, real victims have loved and continue to love those who perpetrate intimate violence against them. you can, from a distance, see and say that the love is wrong and should not exist. but when you're narrating a story from close quarters, you can't effectively differentiate without context, an author depicting as romantic a manifestly abusive relationship and a victim and perpetrator whose inherent sense of themselves, of right and wrong, of boundaries, and acceptable forms of intimacy, has been warped through abuse.

I think about Ruka as a character A LOT. like episode 29 is so fucking important upon rewatch because even though it's not direct, it's the first time we see Akio fail. Ruka was brought in to take Juri away from Shiori and "convert" her to a princess (i.e. place her in a heterosexual relationship), most likely because Akio viewed Juri as a prototype for Utena. when the locket breaks, and we see Ruka attempt to comfort Juri, he is finally acknowledging that she will never love him like she loves Shiori, and that he has failed at becoming her prince. I believe that this is why he vanishes/"dies" without warning; not only does Akio no longer need him anymore, but Ruka himself also has no more desire to play into Akio's system after witnessing Juri's pain; he can no longer stay at Ohtori.
it's not a coincidence that the episode immediately following this one is also the episode that Akio's pursual of Utena becomes more overt; I think after what happened with Juri, he's genuinely afraid that if he doesn't drive a wedge between Utena and Anthy right away, he'll lose the control he has over her.

the theme is same faces
(ID in alt text)
bonus + design notes:

sparknotes:
tridentarii: the building block was "lions" (corona's mane of hair and king vibes + ianthe's scar lionking swagger) but i think i lost that plot at some point. regardless peep the earrings for symbols of their twisted mutualism. also they have dimples <3 bc on corona they're perfect and on ianthe (when she smiles wide enough) they're sickeningly dissonant
the nonas: harrow has curls bc i think the only thing funnier than saddling a nun who's been shaving her head since infancy with fast-growing hair is for that hair to be horrible messy springy curls that are barely spared from frizz by the sheer grease #bathingisn'tsafeformern. please also applaud my restraint in adhering to canon and not giving nona dimples. she deserved them
the sixth: came to me fully formed honestly. palamedes calls camilla beautiful enough for the alexandrites so i just let my heart and sapphism take the wheel here. for pal when i first read gtn i visualized him very differently but other artists made such a compelling case for scruffy pal that now i can't see him any other way
the second: also let my heart take the wheel here. wanted to draw a man carved out of hardwood so i did <3 at the caliber of necromancer that g1d is i know he probably wouldn't have so much scarring but the heart wants what it wants (cool factor). in my head and in my heart they're from wake
naberius: i don't have anything to say in my defense. i rewatched teen beach movie, found the perfect face claim and set the wheels of fate in motion. i think babs is hot the way a ken doll is hot, y'know? it takes yanny piloting his flesh mecha for him to be gender (<- testimonial from my masc nb friend)

i really do feel for shiori. despite all she does, her cruelty, her manipulation, she's just a girl- "that's all you'll let me be", after all. juri loves her, but it's not the love of equals, juri's self-hatred won't let it be. juri, like the rest of the world, believes shiori to be a "normal" girl, and won't give her the opportunity to be anything else. juri cannot imagine them happy together, and won't even try, won't let shiori try. ohtori will never see shiori as a whole person because all girls are like the Rose Bride, but juri, who shiori wants so badly to be close to, also doesn't acknowledge shiori's own interiority. juri fundamentally thinks she is the problem, that the world is correct and that her feelings, though unchanging, are an aberration. juri is shiori's Prince, and that's not a good thing- shiori's purity, innocence, are more important than her thoughts and feelings, and juri protects them and her as an object and not an equal. shiori cannot destroy the world she lives in, or at least, she doesn't think she can, but she can hurt juri, and she can hurt the Rose Bride, the Princess juri makes her into

I don’t know why I’ve never zeroed in on this line before, but right after Gideon’s gotten Jeannemary out of the facility and is trying to figure out where to go?
“She had to get her to safety. She wanted her longsword and she wanted Harrow.”
I cannot get over how even in the middle of complete panic, when she needs safety her mind goes to her sword and to Harrow in the same breath.
