i don't know!! just not a treat type of person, i guess. there's nothing i really felt like. and i don't have much of a sweet tooth, but that's why eiffel should be a real person i know for real. he'd be so happy to get extra dessert.

thank you!! well, of course i really love hera wishing eiffel happy birthday on his 32nd. his 33rd is sweet, too, but his 32nd is a defining moment for their relationship, i think. she pays attention to what's important to him, she cares about him, he's so genuinely taken aback and grateful, his voice gets all soft...

characters having sad/difficult birthdays usually gets me because i also have a birthday complex, and i'm obviously very emotionally attached to eiffel to begin with, so. i feel for him. he's not used to having anyone prioritize him like that, his birthday's overshadowed by a major holiday, by 30 he thought his life was over, his 31st was his first year in space and nobody said anything. he's a grown man holding onto childhood hurt.

hera's birthday is difficult for her, i think; unlike most people, she can remember the earliest days of her life, and they're not happy ones. and she'd wonder if it even counts as a Real Birthday. i think she'd really like to celebrate her birthday, and i think eiffel would be all in on that (he's got a frustrating tendency to assume people care about the same things he does, but in this case i think it makes him pretty good at other people's birthdays - in the past, maybe that's been part of the frustration, that he's expected people to return the favor and they haven't), but maybe she'd want to pick a different day with better connotations.

and of course. eiffel would be aghast to learn that minkowski's birthday is star wars day, the injustice of it all, but i don't think minkowski makes a big deal out of her birthday like that. i think she prefers quiet, small, and private celebrations and doesn't really go around telling people or expecting them to know. despite, again, the injustice, i think he'd insist she should celebrate more, and she'd be trying to get out of it. lovelace is probably somewhere in the middle; she's not placing the same importance on it that eiffel is, but she'd go out with friends and have a good time. it might be a more sensitive topic now that she's been "born" more than once.

thank you!! honestly, i think his favorite birthday cake would be any cake that someone else made/bought for him, because it'd be proof they remembered and cared about his birthday. he's got a complex. the acknowledgement would probably matter a lot more to him than the type of cake itself.

how would eiffel prepare for a date?

i've been thinking about this, and i'm not sure, honestly? i think it is something he'd freak out over, but his idea of "getting ready" is, like, mostly just a lot of talking to himself in the mirror. he always tries to come up with something cool to say, and it never plays out how he wants it to, but he prides himself on improvisation. maybe digging around for one of his "nice" t-shirts (one with fewer holes in it) (or at least one that doesn't smell weird.) he gets fixated on something like what song he wants to have playing in the car when he picks his date up and completely forgets he should probably clean all the fast food wrappers out of the back seat until he's already running late.

i turn 30 in a week and i am going insane about it unfortunately. like yes you don't have to have your life together by 30. i know. but i wish i could've done even one thing before then. and i wish i was desirable in any way. but oh well

in a similar vein to maxwell's phrasing/course of action in memoria mirroring cutter's threats to hera in her live show performance review, there's a scene in controlled demolition that makes me uneasy.

first: maxwell inserts herself into this conversation to reveal personal medical information of hera's. she apologizes to hera: "i'm sorry. i wasn't sure about the best way to broach the subject." and hera doesn't object, but, well. it's not really her subject to broach, and it won't be the last time she ignores hera's privacy to serve her own needs (notably: need to know.)

second: compare this to the exchange in decommissioned where rachel tells hera, "don't think of it as 'dead.'" this isn't hera clarifying or making a comparison herself; it's just one more person defining her experience for her, and using dehumanizing language to do it.

... and that exchange is followed up by this one. it's insidious because it could be harmless, it could even be well meaning, if we didn't know what we know. over time, a clearer pattern emerges of maxwell speaking for hera, speaking over her, ignoring her privacy, telling her how she should feel and how to define her own experiences, which of course culminates in something much more severe, but the red flags were there from the start. they were there from the moment she came on board and made hera call minkowski "lieutenant" (again, a direct parallel of something done to her by someone who violated her; in that case, hilbert.) but it's true that maxwell can help, and that hera needs help, and that she outwardly appears sympathetic in a way hera isn't used to, and so hera just... doesn't see any of that until it's too late, because she doesn't want to see it. it's painfully real.
