Because of the way Lestat grew up, do you think it bothered him that Louis owned slaves? I wonder if his background gave him more empathy for them and if that’s one of the things he disliked about Louis. If it was, it makes sense that Louis would leave that out of the Interview.

As much as that would be a credit to Lestat’s critical thinking ability, he canonically was REALLY into owning slaves I fear…..his primary enrichment on the plantation was hunting them for sport and then being Louis’ enforcer both by request and sometimes just freelance for fun :/ That mention from Louis of how Lestat very brutally whips the enslaved women just for lingering too close to the room with their coffins kind of sums it up.

As disturbing as this part of him is, I think it makes a lot of sense for his character. Lestat is an eye for an eye type of guy with a lot of entitlement wrapped up in his trauma. He spent his human life being abused and taken advantage of, so now that he’s the fat cat on top he’s more than happy to take out his resentment and inferiority complex on others. Stereotypical bullied at home, bully at school scenario. It’s the same reason he’s constantly trying to belittle and push Louis around, the same reason he’s mean and controlling towards Claudia, and the same reason he forcibly turns David. It’s just what he Does when he’s in a position of power because he needs to feel strong at any cost.

I can listen to you speak about Louis all day ♡ could you please speak about his eating disorder portions in your recent fic and what you said about his body before or after turning as you said in the tags of a post you reblogged, "18th century aristocrat Louis with his rich guy body and incredibly dated sideburns are so important to me" how would Louis' body change before and after becoming a vampire, I'm fascinated.

That’s really really sweet, thank you!! I can and will do it all day so I’m glad! And I would love to talk about that absolutely, apparently I had a lot to say about this so cut partway down 💀

What I included in my fic is really just applying what we know to be true about how Louis views eating and indulgence to the context of human food. I have a post here where I’ve talked about his disordered eating behaviors before too, in a general sense! Those sorts of feelings and thought patterns often develop in childhood anyway, and so many of his other issues seem to be connected to how he lived as a human as it is. Louis is so afraid of losing control of himself, that’s really the crux of his turmoil, and so afraid of his desires and appetites of all kinds. I was picturing this as just another way that manifests.

When EDs aren’t about appearance and beauty standards, they’re usually about control, the same kind Louis is so obsessed with throughout the series. He’s someone who feels ashamed and guilty and like he’s Bad all the time, he’s always finding ways even as a vampire to try to “do penance” and to prove something to himself or God or his family. Just like he does as an adult, he’s living in a cycle of overwhelming, addict-like dopamine hits that kind of strip him of his humanity before crashing back into these plateaus of total misery and deprivation where he tries to get his goodness back through suffering.

It doesn’t help that we know Paul doesn’t have this issue at all. Control and discipline, even in the extremes, seem to come easily to him, so that must have made things even harder for Louis. He already struggles immensely in this area, and as he grows up he’s probably watching and wondering why God makes it easy for Paul and not for him, even though he was trying just as hard as his brother. Why don’t his prayers for help get answered like Paul’s do? It doesn’t matter if he was just a normal little kid with a sweet tooth. To him, it feels like gluttony and a horrible lack of discipline, a sinful earthly desire that separates him from God.

That shame and restriction just makes him more fixated on it though and less able to control himself in the lapses, just like with blood. It’s the same way I had him approach sex and masturbation as well. Even if all he was originally experiencing was regular teenage boy puberty feelings, his fear and shame and attempts to crush it down ultimately blow it out of proportion until it’s this huge, massive deal that he can’t stop obsessing over.

That kind of thinking doesn’t just go away either, so as an adult I imagine him trying to do the bread and water and gruel thing sometimes, but not really being able to stick with it like he wants to. That circles back to the other part of your question. He loves blood (seemingly even more than other vampires), he probably liked good food as a human, and he had plenty of access to it (and maybe a fucked up metabolism from all the yo-yoing if I’m right about that). He’s also clearly a drinker which doesn’t really lend itself to being waifish. He admits himself that he wasn’t really walking the walk of piety as a human and that he was too attached to worldly pleasures, so I have to assume that didn’t exclude food and excessive leisure time. He’d kind of have to be going out of his way to be SUPER skinny with the lifestyle he was living and restricting pretty heavily and consistently, something he is notoriously Not good at…..

Louis describes himself as thin in the book, but it’s mentioned in direct comparison to Paul, who he describes as handsome and strong and robust. I don’t think that necessarily means he was a total bean pole himself, just that he’s not particularly broad and athletic and truly Robust by wealthy 18th century lord standards (the guys shoving sawdust into their shirts and stockings). I always interpret what he said to mean he’s just longer and lankier and less bulky, a naturally slighter build than Paul overall but not crazy thin by modern Ozempic standards.

Even if he was, Lestat also pulls him out of the gutter after what seems to have been potentially months of binge drinking and not giving a fuck, so even if he was Kate Moss before, I doubt that’s still the case when he’s turned. You could also argue that everyone seems to agree that he’s crazy hot by their own old af historical vampire standards, and very, very thin wouldn’t have been the beauty standard for most of history, especially for men.

If anything, I think this could be a key piece of Lestat’s jealousy and more evidence for a not-rail-thin reading. Starvation was always a choice for Louis,m. At the end of the day, he’s beautiful in part because he was wealthy, and the corresponding body will always be a form that’s available to him. Lestat will always look like a peasant under his clothes because he died one. Lestat has to dress and present himself very strategically to make the kind of impression Louis can just by having a filled-out chest and an ass and non-visible abs.

We know that when vampires starve, they sort of shrivel and “tighten up” into kind of a skeletal look, so I figure that what Louis’ body looks like in practice as a vampire varies quite a bit, versus all the other vampires who don’t seem to restrict themselves in any way. In the Pointe du Lac era, he must have been quite gaunt since he spent four years with only animal blood, basically a vampire bare minimum starvation diet. When Claudia comes around, he stops the hunger strike but never seems to be as relentless about hunting as the blondes, so maybe he’s a little thinner than his human body most of the time.

Marius observes in QotD that Louis likes the feeling of hunger/the suffering, and there are several mentions of Louis starving himself at various points in the 90s books, so he never fully stops this restrictive behavior before the 2010s. That’s really the point where I think he would probably get back to what he looked like as a human. He seems to be feeding as often as everyone else, and even enjoying it and partaking in it as a social activity with Lestat, which is huge.

I get the reasoning behind people imagining him as super thin, but just contextually that seems less likely to me than “tall and slender overall but soft enough that you can tell he wasn’t doing any hard labor or having to skip or skimp on meals or alcohol”. I’m sure he gets a little wraithish when he’s Doing Bad but it’s probably not his factory settings.
