I really need someone next season to tell Jonathan that Will and Joyce will be fine and it’s okay to put himself first for once so that he can go off to college with Nancy and become a successful photographer

i love steve, and st\ncy would usually be my thing, but the show has made so much room for him as fanservice (at the expense of jonathan & other characters) it would feel really hollow to me if he and nancy ended up together at the end of it. their relationship wasn't what she wanted, and i see no meaningful change in that. it would just come across like his "reward" for not giving up and moving on (which, again, is pandering)

stranger things S4 thoughts/rant below cut so people don’t get spoiled
There are a lot of things to like about it, like Max’s arc (that scene where she escaped Vecna was impeccable and so emotional!), the Robin and Nancy friendship, and the 001/Creel twist. But this wouldn’t be a rant if I was just talking about the stuff I liked.
I’m probably gonna go against the grain here and say I actually have a lot of problems with the season so far, and the last episodes are gonna have to basically pull off a Hopper miracle to change my opinion on it.
First of all, so far, Hopper being alive has no bearing on the main plot. If you take it out, it simply doesn’t matter other than getting Joyce out of the house so her kids can get shot at and drive to Utah. That storyline exists completely separately from the main issue this season and honestly feels kind of pointless. Hopper is alive... hurray?
The next problem is Will, Mike, and Jonathan’s plot. They are actually doing something that’s relevant to the main plot sort of by helping El, but they are entirely disconnected from the rest of the cast in Hawkins. That wouldn’t be such a huge problem if the Duffers didn’t run out of stuff for them to do after deciphering those coordinates while the rest of the storylines keep moving. You can tell that’s messy plot work because while episode 7 is packed with content, you literally don’t see this group for the whole 110 minutes it runs for. Even their guard getting tortured gets an appearance!
With the Hawkins group, there are some things I just subjectively don’t like, but I don’t necessarily see them as problems. I hate the basketball team subplot. I know they’re there to be another obstacle for our main characters, but holy hell are they annoying. The other thing that’s a no from me? The renewed Steve/Nancy plot. Okay, this is objectively annoying, especially when you have both Robin and Eddie trying to shove them together. Yes, I understand the two of them are going through some problems in their relationship, but when you’ve spent three seasons emphasizing that those two are IN LOVE, I don’t need the shallow wandering eye because of loneliness and regrettable losses, aight? Unless this somehow leads to a revelation for Steve that he needs to stop looking for what he needs in a relationship, I’m not on board with this plot at all.
So, to get my Hopper miracle, I’m looking for:
1. Tying in Hopper’s plot into the main story
2. Let Will, Mike, and Jonathan shine as much as the Hawkins group in the main story
3. Resolve the stupid love triangle in a satisfying way (that hopefully doesn’t involve Steve and Nancy getting back together, ugh)
Only three things on the list, but they’re big asks. I know how tough it is to write a story that can serve the entire cast equally, so I’m well aware it might not happen, but hopefully I’m surprised. At the very least, it’s been an entertaining watch with some outstanding moments.

Grey’s is so Frustrating
How does an episode about Levi’s mistake turn into one that focuses on Webber and Bailey? Jake is literally a main cast member and he got two scenes.
This is a big reason why this show is not good anymore. They continue to focus on long-running characters who’ve already been through several character arcs, and use new characters (that are often our minority reps) as vehicles to their stories. I’m really sick of this. Even daytime soap operas who have loads of characters utilize their new cast members better than Grey’s, and they manage to eventually give their veteran cast members better storylines as a result.
Look at Hayes! He was brought in to be a love interest for Meredith and we didn’t even get to see them date. We could’ve had a very interesting storyline about the struggles of establishing a blended family and how Hayes and Meredith honour their departed spouses but still love each other--hell, there were a ton of ways they could’ve gone with this. Instead Hayes became Jo’s friend for 2.5 seconds so she could switch specialties and is leaving because of Owen (jk, he’s leaving to make space for Meredith’s new, dull boyfriend).
I understanding they probably want to give their OGs more screen time because they have to pay them the most, but man, mix a few newbies in there! Give them personalities and stories! Stop relegating them to tools to make your regular cast act out a recycled storyline we already saw 5 seasons ago! SIGH.

okay, so here’s my take (that nobody asked for) on the Schmico situation. The obvious reason for Schmidt running away would be because he’s suddenly getting everything he ever asked Nico for and it freaked him out, but the dramatic-ass writer in me wants it to be this:
Levi gets scared because he remembers where the two of them went wrong last time, and it was when they were living together. Yes, Nico’s giving him what he asked for and Levi wants to go for it, but maybe he thinks that if he moves in again, they’ll wind up where they were last time which was broken up. Is that actually it? Probably not. It’s Grey’s, after all.
On a completely unrelated topic, I almost feel like that was the best performance Alex Landi has ever had as Nico? Or at least the best performance in a while. Smiley, nice, expressive Nico? Can we have more of this please? Give this guy some decent material to work with, Krista!

wait, Grey’s Anatomy was actually kind of good to Nico Kim this week? I am S H O C K E D. but also pleasantly surprised, especially because of the added Asian elements which were handled quite tastefully (Julie Wong is now my new queen).
I don’t know what the last scene means, but when Nico was done ranting and Levi was like “k, let’s go,” Nico was totally not expecting that reply. That little smile after--I loved it. I’m glad Levi decided not to push him for once.
NICO HAD ACTUAL SCENES. THAT WERE ABOUT HIM. AND DID NOT REVOLVE AROUND LEVI. AND DID NOT MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE A COMPLETE ASSHOLE. I’M LITERALLY SO HAPPY???? AND ALEX LANDI GOT REAL MATERIAL HE COULD WORK WITH??? CAN WE KEEP GOING WITH THIS AND END 2020 ON A HIGH NOTE???

Hard AGREE. I keep rolling my eyes when people are like “good for Schmitt. he deserves better” when it comes to Nico because these are the same people who were like “Levi and Nico are so boring. get them off my screen.” i mean, you can just admit you weren’t actually paying any attention to this couple and keep your mouth shut if you have no idea what you’re talking about. Nico was clearly a good boyfriend to Levi until the abrupt turn in his character after Levi’s uncle’s death. i’ve had it with these people and their hot takes.
Grey’s version of love relies on monologues, on grand gestures, and now, I guess, sacrifices.
You are right and I hate it. I’m not understanding how these monologues are romantic. Owen’s nasty-ass confession while Teddy was giving birth nearly made me throw up. Is that harsh? Probably, but it’s true. And as much as I like Amelia and Link as a couple, Link yelling “YOU MAKE ME WANT TO WRITE LOVE SONGS IN THE RAIN!” was cringey as fuck. i don’t need people declaring their feelings like it’s shakespeare in the park, okay? whatever happened to sensual eyelines and subtext so strong it pops off the screen?
The worst part is, Nico’s love for Levi was a lot more of showing than telling, and they retconned that whole thing. the one thing they actually did right is subject to their new revisionist history that Nico and Levi’s relationship was Not That Deep. krista must be rolling in her money laughing at all of us
I hate how grey's wrote Schmico story in season 16! They were such a great coupleThey change nico's personality! Ok nico never was the type of person who talks about his feelings that much and says "i love you" but he does it gestures! I hate so much how they make nico an (possibly) abusive boyfriend. NICO KIM LOVES LEVI AND HE WOULD NEVER BE AN ABUSIVE BF, HE HIS AMAZING, HELPED LEVI WITH HIS CONFIDENCE AND WHEN HE WAS SICK!! Just because he isnt that verbal as levi doesnt mean he doesntLOVEHIM
Yeeeeeep!
Again, I said this a while ago, I see where people are coming from when they say “Levi deserves better!” even though I whole-heartedly and vehemently disagree.
Grey’s version of love relies on monologues, on grand gestures, and now, I guess, sacrifices. All of which is not a part of Nico’s character, even as a baby character back in s15 and even fanon Nico (at least MY fanon Nico).
Almost every single character in s16 has had to give up or do something crazy in order to tell their respective partners that they loved them. Which is fine, whatever, makes for good tv.
But it also tells me that grey’s is completely incapable of writing a character that doesn’t do that. That is, idk, normal and not fucking batshit crazy????
Like Nico said, you gotta be crazy to think he would give up a DREAM JOB and also be crazy to think Nico might just up and leave Levi without a talk or without a concrete trajectory of where Nico was going with his career. (Did Levi even congratulate his bf? I’m too lazy to go scrub through that episode to find out. I know he didn’t really congratulate Nico on getting an interview to San Fran and then just got sad that Nico might be moving).
And I hate being meta and I hate giving grey’s justification, especially because this falls in line with the “they’re wired differently” bit but Nico laid himself out to Levi way before they started dating. He told Levi he had no time for a bf because of his fellowship. He told Levi he didn’t want to do the gay sherpa thing. He told Levi he wasn’t ready to move in together. He TOLD LEVI ALL OF THOSE THINGS???
It’s not a SURPRISE?
Yet suddenly Levi’s like Shocked Pikachu face when he pretty much corners Nico with every interaction they have to get him to talk or to get him to agree to things he hasn’t agreed to or to just accuse him of not loving Levi enough. Like.. shit dawg. No wonder they broke up. I’d break up if i were Nico AND if I were Levi. Imagine being in a relationship where you felt like every time you talked, the other was going to criticize you or tell you what you did wrong this time or imagine being in a relationship where you felt that all the other person ever wanted to do was have sex and that they didn’t love you as much as you loved them.
But ALSO don’t forget the complete shit show the writing has been. If this drama had happened maybe before the ambulance, maybe right after the elevator kiss – I’d be for it. I would be like, hm, that makes sense! Nico’s just been a playaaa this whole time! They’re not in a really deep relationship yet for 1+ years and we haven’t seen time and time again Nico loving Levi and doting on him and bringing him up. And helping Levi blossom.
It’s like we REGRESSED, yknow? It’s like, yeah, I know Nico is like that but you’d think he had changed and decided Levi was The One even though Levi is everything he’s NEVER wanted in the first place. That we got past that already??? (Yes, Nico said he’s into nerdy dudes but I don’t think he wanted a RELATIONSHIP back then.)
Is this all making sense? This is why I’m just fucking… annoyed. I don’t like how it makes sense but also doesn’t make sense. I don’t like that I have to wonder why this happened but then THIS happened. It’s MESSY. It’s WEIRD.
Also Nico has literally zero development or voice and that’s what enrages me the most every time I think about schmico.

ugh, excuse my while I rant about terrible takes on Reddit by people who are pointless to argue with
someone was saying that Nico was probably supposed to have a deeper storyline, but they decided against it because Alex Landi is such a bad actor. what the hell kind of backwards logic is that? You don’t hire an actor if they can’t do their job, which is acting. Alex might seem like a bad actor because we haven’t seen Nico do anything else other than prop Levi’s character or be a little bitch when convenient for the plot. he doesn’t exactly get a ton of material to work with
to say the writers backed out of a better storyline for the character because the actor can’t act is the fucking dumbest thing i’ve ever heard. we all know Shonda didn’t mind shitty writing when she had personal tiffs with the actor, but Alex isn’t even a main cast member, and they all get along well with him. Krista doesn’t have any reason to write badly for him
the writing is bad for Nico because the writers don’t care for him as a character, not “because he can’t handle a deeper storyline.” what the fuck is that? no, they just want to prop Levi and are doing it at Nico’s expense.

Dear Grey's writers,
I know Nico Kim is a supporting character, but that doesn't mean that you can treat him like an object. There are precisely two things we know about him: he's a doctor and he speaks Korean fluently. Oh and that he has a boyfriend.
But the fans want more. Does he like jazz? Does he sing in the shower? What's his favourite movie, who was his first kiss, what are his parents called, where did he grow up?
In fact, I'll show you how easy it is!
Scenario 1:
Int. Nico's car - Day
LEVI and NICO are on their way to LEVI'S UNCLE. Music is playing, a soft rock song.
NICO (turning the volume up)
I like this song.
Scenario 2:
Int. Levi's bedroom - Night
LEVI and NICO are packing up Levi's things. They are currently boxing his DVDs.
Nico picks up a [nerdy film, one of Levi's favourites].
NICO
I love this film.
Levi blinks rapidly, then grins. He crosses the floor and takes the DVD from Nico's hand.
LEVI
Who knew a successful doctor with the body of a Greek god likes [said nerdy film].
See it's not that hard? Take your time to build characters, don't just make them shallow. Being pretty isn't a personality trait.
Best regards,
The entire Schmico fandom
