Morgan hadn’t wondered if the woman was prepared or not, but now she knew. Her main focus was on the box that was just out of reach though. She stretched again, finally getting a small grip on the granola. Climbing down, she smiled triumphantly. “See? No falling.”
Tumblr media
Cordelia felt how she was slowly rooting for her and relaxed a bit when she realized that the woman had finally succeeded in getting her desired treat.

“Congratulations. I am glad you achieved your goals without major or minor injuries. But next time asking the clerk for help might prove successful and less dangerous”

nathanieldelmore:
Nate stuffed his hand not on Cosmo’s leash into the pocket of his suit coat, pressing the smooth, cold skipping stone into his palm as he listened. It felt second nature to apologize for his anxiety when people noticed it. Fighting that urge he pressed the stone harder into his palm and nodded. “That’s really kind of you. I always need the fresh air after those things. Nothing’s worse than standing in front of a bunch of people talking about something that none of them are listening to or really care about. It’s all reputation and pretense.” He hadn’t meant to say the last bit, pressing his lips into an apologetic smile before looking at his feet and petting Cosmo, who was leaning hard into his leg.
Taking a moment to collect himself he let go of the rock in his pocket and reached his hand out to introduce himself. “I’m Nathaniel Delmore. This working boy is Cosmo. I don’t believe we’ve met before?” He’d been to enough of these events to recognize most of the faces. Most were doms/dommes and the submissives with them were usually their claims. As a younger member of the ‘usual suspects’ but not particularly young himself, it always seemed to be a topic that bugged anyone his parent’s age. So, he avoided asking the young woman who she was there with to avoid being asked the same question.
Tumblr media
Cordelia nodded, fully understanding the need for fresh air after being in such a vulnerable and highly exposed position up there on stage. She had felt naked considering how many people had stared at her, gossiping what someone like her was supposed to do here, especially without a dom by her side. “It feels like attending a masquerade and being the only one who is not dressed for the occasion”, she said, walking out of the doorway and over to him, watching him careful to make sure that she was still not invading his personal space. “But I am thankful to have found someone who shares my sentiment. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Delmore, and you Cosmo”, she gently smiled at the dog, knowing better than to give in to the want to pet him.
Tumblr media
“My name is Cordelia Davenport”, she said, taking his hand, suddenly feeling weirdly calm considering that the entire night she had been nervous, like a fish out of water.

nathanieldelmore:
Since getting his first service dog there hadn’t been a time he’d given a speech where before walking on the stage the dog hadn’t alerted him to his anxiety and a possible panic attack. Midway through his speech, Cosmo nudged his head behind Nathaniel’s leg, a second alert. He paused, took a breath, reaching down to scratch the boy under his bow tie and service collar before continuing. By the time he was done, he offered a polite thank you and wave as questions started flying and Nate excused himself. The unwelcome and familiar tightness in his chest, head noisy as he tried to stop replying the speech, and Cosmo’s wet nose told him he needed air- quickly.
Stepping onto the balcony, Nate quickly loosened his tie and held the edge of the banister in one hand, the other reaching down for the dog nuzzling against his leg. With his eyes closed, he took deep, slow breaths, clearing his mind and collecting himself before heading back in. As soon as he’d turned to do so he noticed he wasn’t alone. Biting his lip, Nate hesitated, wondering if he should explain or introduce himself. Sometimes neither felt necessary. His pale blue eyes met theirs and he quietly asked them, “Been there long?”

When one of the doctors at the clinic had asked her to be their plus one at a Delmore fundraiser, Cordelia hadn’t been fully aware what she was getting herself into. Now she was here in a room full of people that would very likely never willingly talk to a girl that was born and raised in Morrell Point. Her friend had been called to work for an emergency before they had even set foot into the venue, but with the invitation in hand they couldn’t turn Cordelia down, and they had made her promise to enjoy the evening while she could. Even though she wore her best dress, she was hopelessly underdressed and to make sure that she wouldn’t be even more in the centre of attention for her clothing choice than she already had been. There were a great many people using big words on that stage, but the only one she actually enjoyed listening to, was Nathaniel Delmore. She felt the shift in the room when he entered the stage with his assistance dog. Cordelia knew that the majority of the room considered this a weakness, but she understood the value of a support animal by your side. One of her former teachers was affiliated with an organization to train support animals for those who needed them and seeing one of those furry heroes in action always warmed her heart. But it also worried her. It was clearly visible both in the dog’s behaviour and written all over the man’s face. He was close to a panic attack and even though he kept it together admirably well while he was up there in the limelight, Cordelia worried that once he got down from the stage and the adrenalin would wear off, he would fall into the hole that was sadly often followed by such a stressing situation. So when he left for the balcony, Cordelia followed quietly, just wanting to check in for long enough to be sure he was OK and didn’t need help. When she was about to leave, he turned around and spotted her and that made her stop in her tracks.

Toy nodded and made a mental note to look up the word ‘esoteric’ later. English was his second language, so the occasionally encountered vocabulary he hadn’t quite learned yet. If it didn’t come up often in conversation, it was harder to remember certain words. He was just glad there was no way she’d possibly know he didn’t understand her meaning without his telling her.
“I’ll do that. Thank you for your advice,” he said with a smile.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It was my pleasure. And I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that you find something fitting”, she replied, before she turned around to go back on her own quest for hunting a look that she could enjoy wearing while going out for her anniversary dinner. And as she walked down the aisle, her fingers gently touching the fabrics of the clothes that were hanging there, waiting for one that would answer her.

“Well you’d hate to come back dog eared and worn out.” He murmured in agreement. He took the book. He pondered for a moment, “Allende? That sounds familiar? I think I read her Spirits book. Den of Spirits, Home of Spirits, something like that.” He flipped open the flyleaf and nodded, “House of Spirits. Well I was in the ball park as the Americans say.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
„I'd fear more for you and your sanity, Sir. I am sturdier built than I look“, the words had come out of her mouth before she had even been able to properly process what she had said. All she could hope for now was that the topic of Isabel Allende and the House of Spirits was enough to distract him from that highly inappropriate statement. „Yes. Her debut. Quite the impressive work“, her eyes wandered over the shelf, recognizing three very familiar books. „And if you are ever in the need of an excellently written book series as a gift for a child or teenager, you should go for those“, she pointed at the trilogy that had started her love with the author. City of Beasts, Kingdom of the Golden Dragon and Forest of the Pygmies.

Cordelia Davenport, the one with the gentle heart.
The day Cordelia Davenport was born was a dark one for her family. There were complications while her mother was giving birth and since they couldn’t afford to bring her to a hospital, the day Elizabeth Davenport died is Cordelia’s birthday. When she was younger, Cordelia couldn’t fully grasp the implications of her birth or why her sisters were that distant with her. They hated her for taking their mother away and when she grew older, and it became apparent how much she looked like her mother, the distance grew into loathing. Only her father adored his youngest, shielding her against her older sisters, which only fuelled their hate. Growing up in Morrell Point is never easy, especially not as the children of a single father, so each took away their very own lesson from their upbringing. Gabriele, the oldest, learned that to succeed in life, you need power, so she worked hard and got herself a place in the STEM guild, working as an architect to plan new urban infrastructure. Rebecca, the second oldest, learned that in order to succeed in life, you need a powerful and rich person by your side. She became the sugar baby to some influential names, cutting ties with both her family and her neighbourhood. And then there is Cordelia, the third daughter and her father’s favourite. She learned that compassion and kindness was how she wanted to leave her mark on the world. Even when she had been a child, she was known for sharing the few things she had and patching kids up who had a sore knee or little cuts after playing too much. Her father has always been proud of her, believing that different from Rebecca she would be stepping into her older sister’s footsteps and make herself a name as a doctor, maybe even being able to be part of a guild and securing a life away from Morrell Point. That hope was destroyed when it became apparent that Cordelia was a submissive. Because of her alignment, her guidance counsellor at high school greatly discouraged her to pursuit the dream of becoming a surgeon. Chances she would be accepted were barely existing and even if she would make it, no one in their right mind would willingly hire a submissive surgeon. But since no one could deny her talent for the profession, they suggested her being trained as a nurse. As expected, she excelled at training, the first responder training she did voluntarily in high school really coming in handy. When Cordelia is not found in her own lectures or the library, she is spending every free moment in normal medical lectures, probably showing up more often than a lot of the people majoring. To make sure that no one would ever lose their lives because they couldn’t afford the right care like her mother, she started volunteering at The Med Centre as soon as she was allowed, building herself a reputation that lead to her being hired when she finished her training at the top of her class. Shortly after starting her work in the Med Center’s ER her father passed away from a heart attack, leaving his youngest daughter with his legacy at age 23. What Cordelia does not know yet, to pay for both her and Gabriele’s education her father had to take out a loan from the Syndicate, leaving her with a substantial debt and barely any means to pay them off. So more often than not she is working her debt off, stitching Syndicate members back together, being on duty 24/7. While she works for the Syndicate, Cordelia meets the first and so far only man she ever felt something like a connection to. He is a patient, she puts him back together. They never become an official thing, but no matter how much Cordelia wants to deny it, she always has had feelings for him. For years, she has now balanced her work for the Syndicate with her work at the Med Centre until she finally paid off her debt. This newly one freedom feels rather surreal, and she still answers her “work phone”. A part of herself is even wondering if another loan could enable her to go back to university and become the surgeon she always wanted to be.

Asher looked around the cafe. Surely there had to be other seats. But it was rather crowded, so he nodded his head. “Sure, please have a seat,” he said, before returning to his work. He wasn’t about to send someone away over something as silly as a table.
Tumblr media
Cordelia saw how his eyes wandered around the café, understanding that having a stranger at your table was not a very enticing prospect, but when he offered her a seat, she exhaled, realizing that she had held her breath while she had waited for his answer.
Tumblr media
“Thank you, Sir. That is very kind of you”, Cordelia said, giving him her widest smile when she sat down, looking around until she caught the eye of the waitress and giving her a sign to show that she wanted to order.

“You feel it? Well…I wouldn’t put any fabrics that are too abrasive on my body. That’d definitely be uncomfortable.” He was looking more for an opinion on how the outfit looked. Now how it felt or how he looked like he felt as he wore it. It seemed a harder question than it ought to be. “I’ll try something else though. Thank you. I appreciate it.”
Tumblr media
Cordelia knew that her way of choosing clothes were very different from most others. She had never bothered with looks, especially considering how bad of an example her self obsessed older sister had been, but he seemed like someone who found enjoyment in expressing himself through clothes. “It’s more about a feeling. If you want to be esoteric you could say I start a nice conversation”
Tumblr media
“And just stick to what makes you feel good. That’s when you will look best”, she added, giving him her brightest smile hoping that he would really find what he was looking for, no matter what that was.

Morgan rolled her eyes as she continued reaching for the coveted granola. “I’m not going to fall. I’ve done this plenty of times. And even if I did somehow fall, I won’t need first aid.” Adjusting her footing, she stretched her arm as far as she thought it could go. “Thanks though,” she murmured.
Tumblr media
Cordelia chuckled, putting down her basket, ready to at least attempt to catch her in case she’d fall. Maybe she had done it before, but there was a first for everything, even falling. “I am rather prepared than having to wing it. Kind of part of my job description”

“Does that mean you are available for purchase?” Oz couldn’t resist teasing, with a soft laugh. He shook his head as he looked at the stack in his arms. “Hmmm … that is probably best.” he reshelved the book neatly and then poked through the shelf for the first in the series. This author was rather prolific, which he was never sure is a good thing.
“Do you have any recommendations? Something unique perhaps?” he asked with interest.
Tumblr media
Of all the comments she could have imagined getting for hers, someone, even if only jokingly, wondering if they could purchase her was pretty much the last, and it made her laugh. “I’d be careful and check in with Nick first considering his return policies”, she replied, brushing back on of the dark locks that framed her face.
Tumblr media
“Well, that’s a tricky one”, her eyes wandered around the room, not sure what to suggest to the man, especially considering his very specific book selection. And then her eyes found a section she walked over to, taking a quite heavy book from the shelf. Zorro by Isabel Allende. “But I always come back to her. My sister got one of her other books as a birthday present and hated it, so she gave it to me. I was done with that trilogy in less than a week. Though here the topic is less aimed at teenagers, so it might be more to your liking”

“…so I tell him either shut up or put your money where your mouth is. You know what the fucker did? ” Lian’s hasn’t paused to drink his beer for the past ten minutes deep into his story. Eyes flashing wildly as he gestured. “Actually fucking did it, buck naked and all.”
Tumblr media
She knew that curfew was coming closer and closer but after the last shift she really needed a drink. Cordelia never had a wild phase like her sisters, sneaking out for parties and drinking a lot of cheap booze, but she still had a favourite bar and if she ever showed up, the bartender knew that she was in need for something good. Without her ordering, he put a glass of scotch in front of her, and then she turned to the side, seeing a familiar face sitting next to her. “Well that is a really kind offer, but thankfully, this darling already got me covered. There is an advantage to great sewing skills after all”
Tumblr media
“But don’t let me interrupt you in your story. I would hate to steal your punchline”

“I don’t look like I enjoy it?” Toy looked in the mirror again. Maybe she was right. He felt a little at a loss for what he would look like he enjoyed wearing. “I’ll try something else then. Thank you.” He wondered how she’d have answered if he’d just smiled.
Tumblr media
Cordelia had honed her skill of reading people. It was a part of her job that made her good at what she was doing for a living and right now, she had the feeling that he was unhappy, both with the clothing and her answer.
Tumblr media
“I always feel the fabric before I look at anything else. No matter how beautiful the dress looks you put me in, if it doesn’t feel right, I look like a drowned rat”, she tried to explain, not sure if she should just leave him to his own discovery journey through the aisles of the shop or if she could actually be of any help, even though she was probably one of the last people that come to mind when the adjective fashionable is used.

Oz walked through the bookstore with several selections already balanced on his forearm as he picked up another option, flipping open the front cover to read the description. Someone brushed his shoulder and he murmured, “I’ve not heard of this author before. Any good?” he turned and then had the grace to look amused, “Apologies. I thought you were a clerk.”
Since Cordelia had to leave her parent’s flat after her father’s death, there had been no other place in Morrell Point that felt as much as home as the Nameless Bookstore. How many hours had she spent in there, reading books that weren’t available at the library, and she couldn’t afford. It hadn’t taken long for her and the owner to become close friends, him even bringing her home when she had spent far too long reading and the curfew was already in place. Even these days she loved to come by, less for buying books and more for checking in on him, making sure that he was good. No matter how busy her days had been and how much she was stressed, the scent of old paper, dust and leather, that wavered through the rows of bookshelves never failed to calm her down. “Well you are probably not that far off. I think by now one could consider me part of the inventory”, Cordelia chuckled a little as she walked closer to him.
Tumblr media
“I am not one for thrillers, so it’s hard to judge. But one of my co-workers is obsessed. Though you should probably start with the first book”, she said, still remembering the excited rants of her friend, who always took a day or two off when the author published a new book in the series.
