How to Alleviate discomfort after Wisdom Tooth Removal
Tumblr media
Wisdom teeth have the potential to cause significant problems. One reason is that this third set of molars typically emerges during the teenage years when other teeth have already taken their permanent positions. For many individuals there is insufficient space for the wisdom teeth (or third molars) to fit properly. Dentists often recommend wisdom tooth removal to address the discomfort caused by pressure, inflammation, or decay associated with the wisdom teeth, or to address dental crowding. Because wisdom tooth removal is an invasive procedure, post-operative discomfort is to be expected.
The first step to alleviate discomfort after wisdom tooth removal is to take over the counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. There may also be a prescribed pain medication ordered by the doctor. Taking these medication as instructed by your surgeon helps to effectively manage pain, and it is advisable to take them preemptively before the pain escalates.
Another way to limit pain from wisdom tooth extraction is by rinsing the mouth with a warm saltwater solution. This solution has long been recognized as an effective remedy for various oral health issues, including post-extraction pain. The saltwater acts as a mild antibacterial agent, reducing pain and lowering the risk of infection. Using a saltwater solution is preferable to commercial mouthwashes after tooth extraction, as the alcohol content in mouthwashes can dry out the oral mucosa and exacerbate pain.
Additionally, it is crucial to refrain from smoking after a dental extraction procedure. Smoking can hinder the healing process by disrupting the formation of protective blood clots in the extraction socket. It may also lead to a dry socket, which is inflammation in the bone.

Augusta Health Continues to Improve Its Services
Tumblr media
Virginia Living magazine's “Best of Virginia 2023” issue recognized Augusta Health for its home health provider program. This honor illustrates Augusta Health's commitment to delivering personalized care to Augusta, Staunton, Waynesboro, and surrounding communities while continuing to grow.
Since its inception in 1994, Augusta Health has grown into a 255-bed hospital with 2,450 employees and 225 active medical staff. In 2022, its outpatient visits to Augusta Medical Group clinics numbered 585,703, and home health, laboratory, outpatient surgery, and imaging visits totaled 293,795. The center's commitment to expanding and providing excellent services continues into 2023.
For instance, in May, Augusta Health announced that it received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This accreditation allows the hospital to launch its internal medicine residency program starting with the class of 2024. Residents will contribute to the hospital’s mission of delivering team-based patient care, improving the quality of care, and teaching the best in evidence-based medicine. Furthermore, recognition as a teaching hospital will raise the facility’s profile in the community, attract talent, address health disparities, and improve access to care for local residents..
In addition to receiving its ACGME accreditation, Augusta Health launched a urology department at Medical Center Circle. This department will deliver care for patients with kidney stones, prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, and other disorders. Urologist Brian Stisser, MD, will staff the department, which focuses on delivering quality care using the latest technology.
The health care organization also unveiled the name of its new breast cancer center in June 2023. The Mary Louise Fisher Breast Center houses offices for surgeons, clinical support teams, and radiologists. The center was named in memory of the longest-serving director of the hospital’s board. She was also a family member of owners of Fisher Auto Parts, which gifted Augusta Health $1 million to fund the center. The Mary Louise Fisher Breast Center allows patients to receive a comprehensive range of care.
Finally, Augusta Health entered into a partnership with the United Way of Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro (UWSAW) to ensure that every baby born at Augusta Health is eligible for registration in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) program, which encourages childhood literacy in preschool children.
UWSAW partnered with the DPIL program in 2009. Since the beginning of this partnership, 6,780 local kids have taken part. With the addition of Augusta Health's program Books at Birth, 1,000 more children are projected to be added to the program. Children participating in Books at Birth receive free, age-appropriate, quality books every month until they are five. Civic club and foundation donations and grants cover the costs of the books and mailing, which come to $25 per child each month; at the time of writing, 5,173 children have graduated from the program, and 1,616 are enrolled.
Roxanne Harris, RN, Augusta Health maternal health navigator, reiterated the organization’s commitment to providing quality care to the community and to giving children a good start. In a press release, she noted the importance of literacy for children and adults in the community.
