Turn to technology to keep the lights on in the face of disaster
[The following is a paid advertisement.]
In the wake of an active hurricane season and winter weather on the way, resiliency is the new energy buzzword. Last year, 71 power outages across Illinois affected approximately 186,588 people, according to the 2017 Eaton Blackout Tracker Report. Further, Illinois ranks 15th in the country for the most power outages.
Residents and businesses demand the ability to withstand and recover quickly from power disruptions and are turning to technology for the solution.
The utility is no longer the sole answer to keeping our lights on, we can use innovative technology to build sustainable and resilient power sources. Centrica Business Solutions, a sister company to Direct Energy, is actively working with businesses across the country to install technology to keep their business going through power outages. Learn more about their resiliency study and solutions here.

What do agents actually think about their income?
A new survey of agents across the industry commissioned by Redfin paints a picture of an industry in transition and perhaps in the midst of some soul-searching.
Credit: Redfin
The survey, the first of its kind overseen by Redfin, was done in March with the intent of probing the sentiments of agents in an age of intense change throughout the profession. While commissioned by Redfin, agents from many brokerages across the country participated and were unaware that Redfin was involved.
“Redfin commissioned this survey to understand, at a time when billions in private and public capital is being invested in U.S. real estate brokerages, how the life of an agent has changed, and what we can do to attract a new generation of talent to our profession,” Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman said in a press release.
One salient finding that frames the rest: Agents are proud of what they do. Fully 99 percent indicated as much. But just 21 percent said they would recommend the career to others.
That could be a reflection of anxieties about the challenges of making a good living in the field — challenges that 46 percent of respondents said they are meeting in part by taking on a second job.
Among agents who’ve been in the business for at least five years, just about half — 49 percent — said their commissions had remained about the same over the last five years, while 31 percent reported that their take from sales had declined in that span of time.
“What we learned is that agents love the customer relationships and entrepreneurial independence of being an agent but question whether internet technology has made them more productive, and still worry about finding enough customers to earn a steady living,” Kelman said.
A nearly even split said the internet had reduced the amount of work it took to get through a sale, with 33 percent of the view that it’s made more work for them and 32 percent in the opposite camp.
A small minority of agents, 9 percent, said they had a “very positive” view of the return on investment theyd gotten out of utilizing online lead-generation platforms, while 32 percent said their results with them were merely “positive.” There was a similar minority of 9 percent who said they’d had “very negative” returns on their investment on lead-gen platforms.

Kome Japanesse Eatery Closes at 1303 S. Michigan
Looks like we got confirmation on a post we did back in October:
Kome opened in November of 2017. Before that Ameritalia had a short stint between 2014 and 2017. And before that a neighborhood favorite - Panozzo's held down the fort at this location for a relatively long time.
Will be curious to see what's next...

Double-dose of Bulls vs. Hawks this weekend (open thread)
[The blog is tanking, just doing one thread for the whole weekend -yfbb]
Chicago Bulls (17-45) Atlanta Hawks (21-41)
Friday - Atlanta - 6:30 p.m., NBC Chicago Sports Network
Sunday - Chicago - 2:30 p.m., WGN
Injury Report:
The Hawks list star forward John Collins as questionable tonight with flu-like symptoms. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon has turned into one of the biggest steals from the 2017 NBA draft, quietly posting a team-leading 19.5 points per game on 56.9/37.9/76.9 percent shooting splits. This season, the Hawks are 4-12 in games that he hasn’t played.
They also have a Plumlee or Zeller out injured.
Nobody new on the Bulls injury report.
Preview:
Last time the two teams played was one of the lower points of the season, as the Hawks throttled the Bulls 121-101 at the United Center. It was the Bulls 11th loss in 12 games and Zach LaVine just wasn’t feeling it anymore.
Something’s obviously wrong. We weren’t losing (by) double-digits earlier in the season. We might have been losing -- and we didn’t even have a full roster. I don’t know. We’re a better team now, and we’re getting blown out. It doesn’t make a lot of sense.”
In a weird NBA scheduling quirk, the Bulls will have two opportunities this weekend (tonight and Sunday) to avenge that loss.
In case you live under a rock, or just aren’t interested in also-ran teams playing out the string, the Bulls are doing well right now. Chicago is 4-1 in their last five games and Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen have averaged 24 and 25.8 points per game respectively in that stretch.
Meanwhile, the Hawks have found something with Trae Young, expected by many as the guy from the draft last season most at risk to turn into a bust. He’s still not the most efficient guy in the world, but he averages 17.8 points per game to go along with 7.7 assists. He’s a rookie point guard who has started all 62 of Atlanta’s games, so the Hawks have thrown him into the fire and he’s responded well.
Young obviously catalyzes this, but the Hawks are fun as they play fast and throw up shots (second in the NBA in pace and sixth in 3-point attempt rate). Naturally, the high pace has led them to have the largest turnover percentage in the association as well.
TANK TALK:
Finally, let’s talk candidly about the tankathon right now. Here’s where we stand.

Barring an out-of-the-ordinary run either way, the Bulls are going to end up with that 4th slot.
Yes, the odds are all flattened this year. Each team with a top three worst record in the NBA has a 14.0 percent chance of that coveted No. 1 pick and a 52.1 percent chance at a top three pick. The team with the fourth worse record has a 12.5 percent chance at the No. 1 pick and a 48.1 percent chance at a top three pick. Though in a draft not considered particularly deep, the difference between a 52.1 percent and a 48.1 percent chance at a top three pick seems somewhat significant for a rebuilding team in a lost season.
I will continue to root for the Bulls to lose, because losing close games in which the young core continues to make strides still seems like a best case scenario for the Bulls the rest of the season. Mess around and beat the Hawks twice this weekend and suddenly they’re back in play for moving ‘up’ to 5th slot.

Did Zach LaVine try to sell the Bulls to Anthony Davis?
Did Zach LaVine try to sell the Bulls to Anthony Davis? originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
In a tweet liked by Zach LaVine, you can see the fifth-year guard chat to Anthony Davis after the game and walk away as the Pelicans' Jrue Holiday approaches, only to finish his talk with "The Brow" afterwards.
Obviously, this is not the first time a line has been connected between Davis and the Bulls. Being a Chicago-native who literally has Chicago tattooed on his arm, there has always been the thought that if Chicago was ever able to possess cap space and a talented core at the time, Davis would at least consider the Bulls.
Now, with Wendell Carter Jr.-at 19 years old is seeming like a revelation-who is on pace to be the first teenager to ever average 2 blocks per game in the NBA, Lauri Markkanen, (the now-injured) Kris Dunn and LaVine all having shown enough to make up a solid core, the idea of Davis coming home isn't improbable.
The Bulls can decline the option on Jabari Parker and renounce the rights to Bobby Portis and Cristiano Felicio and end up with between $35 to $53 million in cap space. Dunn, Markkanen and Carter can all be resigned to reasonable contracts down the line and LaVine is under contract for the next four seasons.
If the Bulls acquire Davis, it would be in 2021, which is when Davis can decline his player option and enter the free agent market. By then the Bulls would likely have the long-term starter at the small forward position figured out by then, if they haven't already decided that Chandler Hutchison will be that player. But just to be a bit more conceivable, imagine a lineup of Dunn-LaVine-Markkanen-Davis-Carter.
That lineup would be bucking the league's current trend of downsizing, instead banking on the off-the-dribble ability of Markkanen and the tremendous shot-blocking duo of Carter and Davis to stymie the league's best lineups.
Right now Davis' Pelicans are 5-6 heading into Sunday night's game against the Phoenix Suns. The losses of Rajon Rondo and DeMarcus Cousins didn't affect the prolific offense of New Orleans, but the defense has dropped off dramatically. The Pelicans have an uphill battle to make the playoffs in the improved Western Conference, and if Davis gets antsy about having a real shot to make the NBA Finals, a move to the East becomes all the more attractive.
A Bulls fan can dream right?

Who says journalism is dead?
* By Michael Winter, a “contributor” to the Olney Daily Mail…
Sunday, the Richland County Republican Central Committee hosted their annual fall event at Olney City Park. The community building was filled with republicans from the top down.
In a surprise visit, Governor Bruce Rauner made an appearance to meet and greet his Illinois constituents. He also took the microphone and showed his support for republican candidates here in Richland County; for County Council, Tim Grove, and Mike Hann as candidate for County Treasurer. […]
The governor thanked J.C., then spoke to the gathered crowd. “Thank you for being republicans and thank you for your commitment to the republican party. I want to say a quick hello. I’m on my way to Murphysboro, and I’m riding a motorcycle today…..a beautiful fall day. […]
Amid rousing cheers and appreciative applause, the governor made toward the front of the community center, a man keeping his schedule on his own whistle stop tour of southern Illinois.
The governor stopped for a photo op with Mike Hann on one side and Tim Grove on the other. With handshakes all around, he at last climbed on his iron horse to move on down the road.
The Governor, dressed in black leather riding gear, headed for Murphysboro on a large, throbbing jet black motorcycle. He left Olney to cheers and undoubtedly heads for more at his next stop ‘on the trail’.

Akiem Hicks Ejected vs. Buccaneers After Pushing Official
Rick Scuteri/Associated Press
Chicago Bears defensive lineman Akiem Hicks was ejected from Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for pushing an official, according to Larry Mayer of the Bears' official website.
The ejection occurred after Bears safety Eddie Jackson intercepted Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick late in the first half with Chicago leading 35-3.
Following his ejection, Hicks provided a fan at Soldier Field with an unexpected souvenir, per WGN's Adam Hoge:
At the time Hicks was tossed from the game, he had registered one tackle and one sack, giving him three sacks on the season.
Hicks is among those on the Bears defense who have benefited from the arrival of All-Pro pass-rusher Khalil Mack.
The 28-year-old veteran is in the midst of his third season with the Bears after stints as a member of the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots.
Hicks is looking to build off a career year that saw him finish with 54 tackles and 8.5 sacks last season.
Given the nature of his ejection, Hicks could be subject to a fine or suspension.

Kris Bryant Leaves Game After Collision with Jason Heyward (UPDATES: Cleared to Travel)
As if today’s ongoing drubbing at the hands of the Reds wasn’t bad enough, Kris Bryant left the game after an outfield collision with Jason Heyward.
It looks like Bryant did not realize Heyward was calling for the ball (not sure how aggressively Heyward was calling), and ducked his head down near Heyward’s shoulder.
After time with the trainer and Joe Maddon, Bryant gingerly left the field. We’ll update when there’s more on the injury.
UPDATE: I can’t tell if this is a terrifying update, or no update at all:
“We don’t know exactly what we’re doing with this whole thing yet.”
UPDATE 2: Thanks for the words, Mooney. They do not comfort me at all:
UPDATE 3: OK, so this one is a sliver of positivity:
That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s “fine,” but it does mean the initial evaluation suggested there was a decent chance he could play this week.

Cubs pick up Hamels' option; Smyly to Texas

CHICAGO -- The Cubs' projected 2019 rotation could be the strongest ever now that the team has secured Cole Hamels by picking up his $20 million option.
Of course, the Cubs felt their 2018 rotation would be the best.
Hamels will join starters Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jose Quintana, giving the Cubs a formidable group in their bid to reclaim the National League Central.
Chicago also has Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood and are counting on both getting back on track. Chatwood made 20 starts but finished the season in the bullpen and was the Major League leader in walks. Darvish was limited to eight starts because of injuries and replaced by Mike Montgomery, whose role for 2019 is still to be determined.
• Utility man Reinheimer claimed from Mets
"I fully expect [Darvish] to be healthy and go do his thing and punch out a lot of guys and be part of a really great starting staff next year," Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said of the right-hander, who signed a six-year, $126 million deal last February.
Video: Discussing the Cubs' early offseason decisions
The Cubs were able to keep Quintana at an affordable rate, picking up his $10.5 million option this week. However, the addition of Hamels' salary may limit what the Cubs can do this offseason regarding free agency. According to FanGraphs, Hamels' salary will give the Cubs the highest estimated payroll among Major League teams before free agency begins, topping $200 million. That includes the projected 2019 salaries for arbitration-eligible players.
The Cubs viewed Drew Smyly as an option for 2019 when they signed him to a two-year, $10 million contract, but in a related move, they dealt the lefty to the Rangers on Friday. Smyly hasn't pitched in the big leagues since '16 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his elbow and was owed $7 million next year. The Cubs also are sending a player to be named later for a player to be named later to complete the Smyly deal.
The Cubs' Minor League system has yet to produce a starter. Right-hander Adbert Alzolay was a possibility this year but was sidelined with an injury.
Hamels, who was the Rangers' Opening Day starter, gives them a solid addition. The Cubs acquired the veteran on July 27 from Texas, and he posted a 4-3 record and 2.36 ERA in 12 starts. If the Cubs had declined the option, Hamels would have received a $6 million buyout from the Rangers.
"The Cubs have always been one of the top teams who I've always wanted to be a player for," Hamels said after the Cubs were eliminated in the NL Wild Card Game by the Rockies on Oct. 2.
The lefty, who will turn 35 on Dec. 27, was encouraged by what he saw.
"They've got quite a few more years to put a dent in the National League and bring home a couple more World Series," Hamels said of the Cubs.

Keys to the Game: Bulls vs. Trail Blazers (03.27.19)
Tonight the Chicago Bulls (21-54) and the Portland Trail Blazers (46-27) come together at to the United Center to complete their annual two-game season series. The Trail Blazers won the first contest in Portland, 124-112. Portland shot a blistering 56.6% from the field and 42.3% from the three-point line that night. CJ McCollum led them with 24 points (10-14 FG, 2-4 3-PT, 2-2 FT) to go with three rebounds and four assists while rookie Wendell Carter Jr. led Chicago with 22 points and six rebounds.
Portland has now won 12 of the last 15 over the Bulls, and tonight presents the opportunity for them to sweep the season series for the fourth time in the last seven years.
The Trail Blazers, who have already locked up a playoff berth, will take the floor without their talented starting center, Jusuf Nurkic, who was lost on Monday after suffering compound fractures to both his left tibia and fibula while attempting to tip-in a missed shot during a double-overtime victory against the Brooklyn Nets.
The 24-year old 7-foot pivot was enjoying a breakout season, averaging 15.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. His injury occurred during the second overtime after putting up 32 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and four blocks in what turned out to be Portland's playoff clincher. The recent addition of veteran big man Enes Kanter (10.4 points, 7.1 rebounds. 54.1% FG in 14 games with the Blazers) will help definitely fill some of the void left in the middle with Nurkic season-ending injury.
As for tonight's contest, the Trail Blazers come in having won seven of their last eight, including four in a row. At the moment they're essentially tied with Houston for the No. 3 seed in the West with nine games (including tonight) left to play.
Besides Nurkic's absence, Portland is also going to have to get by without high-powered guard CJ McCollum, who has been out of action with a left knee strain suffered on March 16. The 6'3 sniper out of Lehigh, who is averaging 21.3 points, 2.9 assists and 4.0 rebounds, and is the Blazers' second-leading scorer behind point guard Damian Lillard (26.4 points, 6.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds), didn't travel with the team, but is expected back in time for the start of the playoffs in a couple of weeks.
Portland's troubles are small potatoes compared to what the Bulls have had to endure. Just a couple of days into training camp Denzel Valentine was declared out for the year after having to undergo reconstructive ankle surgery. Lauri Markkanen was then lost for six weeks thanks to a serious elbow injury a couple of days later. Promising rookie center Wendell Carter Jr.'s freshman year ended early in mid-January due to thumb surgery, followed by fellow rookie forward Chandler Hutchison's season-ending foot injury a week later. The team's leading scorer, Zach LaVine (23.7 points, 4.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds) has also been sidelined the last couple of games due to a flare up of right patellar tendonitis, as well as point guard Kris Dunn (back strain) and small forward Otto Porter Jr. (right shoulder strain). Add to that the fact that Markkanen became ill during the first half of last night's loss in Toronto and wasn't able to return, and isn't expected to play again tonight, it's safe to assume the Bulls have a fairly steep hill to climb if they're going to pull off an upset win.
All-in-all, Chicago is always at its best when they play a fast-paced, selfless game, and are able to control of the boards. When the ball freely skips from player-to-player and from side-to-side, with everyone involved in the action, they can be tough to beat. This evening the Bulls will need to force Portland's defense onto its collective heels by persistently attacking the basket at every opportunity.
The Bulls must also sport a gritty attitude and get physical, especially when it comes to rebounding and getting into transition. Offensively and defensively Chicago needs to establish a quick, steady flow. Even with a number of their key players sidelined, the bench is still loaded with plenty of speed and athleticism. This underdog crew will need to find a way to score easy buckets before the Trail Blazers have time to set up their defense.
From the moment they walk into the United Center until the final buzzer blares at the end of the night the Bulls need to outhustle and outwork the Trail Blazers in every way possible.
