made koebi a lil... relationship chart??? thing?!? their bestie category is super super important to me...

koebi notes / facts i've been brainstorming the last couple weeks...

despite their favoritism of the ocean, it's not entirely why koebi likes octavinelle and the trio so much. the three of them are actually really easy for them to work with. they operate much like either koebi themself-- or like people they grew up with and worked around. they hold a very healthy fear of them, just like they might with anything in the sea. but koebi is astonishingly comfortable, and at ease with any of the three merfolk.

after book four-- jamil unsettles them a lot. but koebi does try to engage and give him a chance. they don't trust him at all, and probably never will 100%. but koebi is someone who tries to understand all sides of a situation.

they have a running deal with azul; that if they work a certain number of hours-- they get to explore the sea around the octavinelle dorm. they also get free meals during their shifts, and decent breaks.

koebi joins the mountain lovers club initially out of guilt...after hearing that jade was the only member. but does come to really enjoy some of the activities, and going out on hikes. plus seeing how happy jade was when they joined definitely kept them from changing their mind. sigh.

few crushes here and there- but they're determined nothing will ever come of it really. i.e i need a lot of plotting to consider shipping with them. but i am always very very open to it u v u

grim is literally their best friend. koebi is secretly a trouble maker, easily coerced by their adorable furry friend...how embarrassing.

pretty severe insomnia, and issues with fatigue. a lot of it is thanks to chronic anxiety and depression they have.

koebi is also practically blind without their glasses,,,

i like thinking about koebi, and how they handled the overblots. because up until jamil's, they actually handled them with an astonishingly level head.

like, it wasn't so bad, until koebi lost their agency. until the matter of free will was tampered with- and they were dragged into something they wanted to avoid. after the events of book 4 they actually avoid jamil. despite giving him another chance his magic just unsettles them too much. even bringing into account later overblots aside from malleus-- none of the others scare them as much as jamil's did. because to them ( and to me ) the inability to even fight back is terrifying.

it's only after jamil's, that koebi starts to really consider whether or not they're even fit to handle the issues a lot of the students have. post book 4, they actually begin to struggle more with anxiety. and while they're still determined NOT to go home, they try harder to find ways to defend themselves. including relying more and more on the very few people they consider friends at the school.

i love wuya a lot, and i know i have stuff i owe in my askbox for him. but i think i will be moving him to discord only for a while- or potentially for good i'm not sure. i have really considered moving all my ocs to discord, but i'll keep koebi since they're pseudo canon as the twst MC.

yone/kayn: this isn't even related to heartsteel tbh. i havent dove a TON into yone's lore but i do like the feeling of the pairing. i think kayn just pairs best with characters who are as ruthless as he is. i like them in their heartsteel au too though...

chenya is kinda hard to ship with ngl. he's too carefree, too loosy goosy, and really is just out here doin whatever he wants.

idia/chenya: listen. come on. this is... this is a no brainer. seriously though i do love the potential here, and not just because he's a cat. chenya, at least how i write him anyway- is so whimsical and quirky. he isn't necessarily extroverted, but he isn't a big introvert either. like, he is genuinely a cat through and through. not a beast man, not a fae-- something else. i love the idea of idia having sb who doesn't push him to go way outside his comfort zone-- but wont let him just shut himself off from the rest of the world for too long. dunno. at least with my take on him, this one is a fave.

riddle/chenya: so i could really see these two going p much any direction. i love the two of them just... interacting, regardless of the relationship. chenya has known riddle since they were kids. and a bit like trey, i like to think he knows how to push riddle without him blowing up. there is also the added factor that chenya definitely knows at least in some way, what riddle's home life is like. it's the sort of thing that would make their potential bond that much better. i could rlly go in depth on it but then i'd be here making an entire meta on it lmao.

jade/chenya: funny enough. i think jade and chenya might click really well in long term, more than you'd expect. and yeah, i could see this developing from friends, to more given the appropriate amount of time. chenya would be sooo fascinated by how weird and how deeply fucked up jade actually is. and jade likewise would be really intrigued by chenya's strange and uncanny nature... good stuff.

riddle speaks like someone who's lived around this stuff his whole life. magic that is- which he has. riddle's an incredibly skilled mage in fact, something koebi admires quite a lot. " of course. but it isn't just about discovery, it's about understanding, and experience. " fingertips tap gently against the papers in front of them. mostly just notes on magic history- and a little extra. " merfolk dont exist where i'm from, they're just fairy tales. actually... we don't have any of this. no magic. "

koebi recalls then stories of people being crushed in the oceans depths. the pressure turning human bodies into literal paste... eugh...

" don't misunderstand though. i know it's dangerous. but i can't help but jump at a chance like this, you know? to do something i didn't think possible. and all azul asks me for is a few hours a day waiting tables. " they can't help a little laugh. " in my world you'd have to pay thousands of dollars to go half that distance. " their words trail off a bit, as they realize they're rambling. " i can't really think of any time or place i've ever had this much fun. near death scenarios aside-- "

"I suppose there's something to be said for it. Although..." He seems to hesitate on saying what he wants to, but in the end forges on regardless, not really caring how absurd it might sound. "Close though the sea floor in Octavinelle may seem, don't forget it's still far too deep to be toyed with ."

Another pause, and then with slightly more levity in his voice:

"Besides, isn't the point of being a marine biologist to enjoy discovering things?"
