“Dalinar’s medical corps tent layouts and current operating procedures,” Lirin explained.
“‘Dalinar,’ eh?” she said. “A few meetings, and you’re on a first-name basis with the most powerful man in the world?”
“The boy’s attitude is contagious,” Lirin said.
“I’m sure it has nothing to do with his upbringing,” Hesina replied.

In my Rhythm of War rewrite, Odium never switches his attention from Venli to Moash. As a downstream consequence of this, 100% of my complaints for both characters are resolved.

i really do think jasnah's childhood imprisonment was caused by ordinary mental health reasons, not supernatural or spren-related reasons. she seems to fear losing her sanity; her mind apparently once betrayed her, whatever that means; she was locked up by her loved ones in a dark room, which we know is a vorin treatment for mental illness; she mentions being tied down with restraints; dalinar and gavilar were aware of her "lunacy"; jasnah seems to doubt her own memories of it; it apparently lasted several months; and as of gavilar's assassination, she had not bonded ivory - she didn't even understand what she was doing when soulcasting - and, tellingly, ivory does not know about this incident.
it seems a strange thing for her whole family to forget about, but is it really? she doesn't seem to trust her mother, and we all know gavilar was a right bastard - if it was her loved ones who hurt her, it seems plausible it was specifically gavilar (and to a lesser extent navani) who chose to lock her away, which should have been a secret (and shameful at that) but unsurprisingly got out to dalinar somehow. and given that he asks how her lunacy is, that suggests that it definitely lasted several months from both jasnah and other characters' perspectives. almost everyone in her family has a very good excuse not to remember what happened - her father does remember, but he's the one who did it; dalinar was struggling with addiction and therefore might not remember the details well; elhokar would have been a very young child at this time, not old enough to remember; and adolin and renarin weren't born yet. and if the incident were kept secret, why would anyone tell them? the only character who doesn't seem to have any excuse not to remember the incident is navani - but then perhaps she was kept in the dark as to exactly what was happening. it's not implausible that a queen could go several months without seeing her daughter.
most tellingly of all, jasnah herself seems to somewhat doubt her own imprisonment - if no one else remembers it, are her memories really reliable? after all, her own mind betrayed her - somehow. yet she fears losing control, more specifically, losing her sanity - she even seems to understand the heralds' madness, in a way. and her distrust of navani coincides rather sharply with the point of her alleged lunacy...
no, i don't think there's anything supernatural about this at all. she just got some good old-fashioned trauma, which, like kaladin and shallan and so on, later allowed for a nahel bond. what little we know of vorin treatment for madness fits too well together to be coincidence.
#nodding nodding#if gavilar was the one that put her in there then I'm curious to know why she distrusts navani and not him#another excuse to wail melodramatically over the 15+ year wait for the last SLA book. sigh.

Ya'll remember in Oathbringer how Gavinor and all those guards were in the time dilation room, and it felt like days for them, but months or maybe even years passed outside.
And how gavinor is considered quite small and underdeveloped for his age.
Because he wasn't actually his age, he was actually younger.
Because he was in a time dilation room.
So either kal adolin and shallan just didn't fucking believe these guys (not surprising,) or they forgot to mention anything even in passing to Navani (which I don't blame them there was a lot going on).
Anyways.
Jasnah.
Childhood trauma.
Locked in a room for days or weeks or months (i can't remember what she mentioned), and no one remembers.
She landed in a time dilation room. Was it an accident? Did gavilar put her in there? Did amaram?
Everyone thinking she's off her rocker when she finally escapes/is let out. Belittled. Accused of making things up. It was all a dream, just a nightmare!
But it was real, dammit!!!
No wonder she's cold toward Navani and the ardents. No wonder she's a stickler for facts. No wonder she carved herself into the perfect figure. Everything is her choice, her calculation. Dissected, appraised, and evaluated. Ground down to the finest edge, buffed and polished. Not a scuff nor a smudge nor a hair out of place.
She was nearly torn to shreds because she was too easily dismissed as a child.
She will not be dismissed again.

It's funny and all when we joke that Radiance is basically free therapy, but I think we need to remember that much of a Radiant's growth sucks. Like not in a "bad for them" way, though that's not off the table, but that that shit is tailored made to be very uncomfortable. There is no getting a good grade in therapy here. If there's a step that's easily digestible, it will pull a fast one on you and serve you things you're going to hate instead. You'll look over at your friends learning how to love themselves and go "Oh let's go," and then your dumb fucking spren will set down your meal and it's reconciling with your parents.
