We visited City Music Singapore, our favourite music store in the whole world, to get something we needed, and the boss Hsin Loong gave us a mini tour, because this was the first time Jane visited their new premises at LHK Building, Simon Drive. Some lessons from soundcheck for our synthpop show at The Esplanade, Singapore

1. Packing everything in sets makes setup faster.

We packed each synth with its relevant cables and power supply instead of packing all the cables together or all the power supplies together. This meant that the moment we took each synth out of the bag, we had all the necessary cables already with it.

2. Getting to know the sound crew makes the process better and often makes the show better.

We always want to establish good rapport with the sound crew because they are the ones who control how the audience finally hears our sound. For this show, they got to know our synthpop / electropop sound well during the soundcheck. When the audience came in and changed the acoustics of the room (we noticed the sound was less punchy when the first song started), the sound crew helped to fine tune the EQ on the fly, and by our second song, the sound was punchy again. This was especially important for our more EDM-oriented remix songs.

3. Sometimes, when the audio suddenly drops, it could be compression because DAW audio is clipping

During the soundcheck, we noticed that the audio suddenly dropped at some parts of the songs. Often the quiet parts sound OK, but the drops / climaxes / choruses were squashed. We discovered that because we had maxed out the audio levels of several samples that our DAW was playing, this created peaks that triggered the compressor at the front of house mixer. This was even though the DAW mixer appeared to be OK. The solution was to reduce the audio levels of the samples and let the sound crew could boost overall levels on their end.

4. Don't over strain the singer during the soundcheck

We had the luxury of playing through the entire set for soundcheck because we had set up everything quickly. While this is a good time for final tweaks, we had to take it easy so that Jane didn't over strain her voice, since we had two sets to play that night.
