11 questions
Tagged by vertigosight!
Rule #1: Always post the rules Rule #2: Answer the questions from the person who asked, then write 11 new ones Rule #3. Tag 11 people.
1. What is your favorite film?
Why is this thing so hard already? I’m a huge film fan, I have so many faves. Off the top of my head though: Spirited Away, Beginners, Pan’s Labyrinth, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Thank You For Smoking.
2. Name an author/short story/novel/written text you would recommend to anyone?
Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Lesser known book by a well known author. The vignettes and characters are great, and the writing is so precise and simple.
3. What TV show do you recommend I watch?
Definitely Breaking Bad if you haven’t already. LOST is another great one.
4. Do you play video games? If so what do you play and what are you playing now/what’s the last game you played?
Yes I do! I usually play RPGs like Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, etc. Right now I’m playing The Last of Us and it’s such a harrowing game I can’t play it for long at all or I get too freaked out.
5. When you go to a library what kind and how many books do you check out?
Fiction, for sure. Probably 3-4. Some light reading ones, some more literary.
6. What kind of music do you listen to? What was the last song you listened to?
Umm, I listen to a whole range of music so I dunno? Recently though I’ve been obsessed with the Tokyo Ghoul theme song “unravel”. And the band “Stars”.
7. Why did you start your tumblr?
At first to pass the time in summer and see all the pretty RK gifs out there.
8. What do you plan on doing 6 months to a year from now?
I really don’t know. Having a sort of quarter life crisis right now. But I do want to try to get out of the country at least once.
9. Do you have any creative outlets (writing, paiting, editing, etc.)? If so how comfortable do you feel about them (ex. would never show them to any one, it’s just a hobby, this is what I want to do with my life, etc.)?
Writing for sure! Sometimes I do gif sets and stuff? I’m really weird and awkward about my writing and don’t show them to people until I think they’re in a good place. But I’m currently working on a short story I want to try to get published in a literary journal!
10. What’s your favorite story?
This is so hard!! But in general, I like a good redemption story.
11. What else do you want me to know?
I know I don’t really interact a lot with you but I really appreciate the fact that we’re mutuals!
New Questions
What’s your favorite song to listen to on a rainy day?
What’s your favorite character trope/archetype?
On a scale of 1 (total skeptic) to 10 (hopeless romantic), how much of a romantic are you?
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?
What’s an image that makes you happy regardless of the mood you’re in?
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve had?
What does your tumblr handle mean? Where does it come from?
Please recommend a book/film/TV show to me?
What are you interested in/obsessed about currently?
Besides tumblr, what do you usually do on the internet?
How’s your day been? Feel free to be as vague or specific as you want!
Gonna go ahead and tag syolen, tofuthebold, sarndonic, joybulanhagui, white-plum, chibismenkaure and whoever else wants to do this!

Five animated shorts for five female animation pioneers
For this year’s Annency animation festival, the students at Gobelins made five 1-minute animations to honor five female animation pioneers.
They’re all phenomenal. If you have five minutes, please watch each of them. Warning: some hit HARD.
vimeo
Mary Blair (1911-1978)
Worked for Ub Iwerks, MGM, and eventually Disney. Known for creating incredibly vibrant watercolors, which clashed with the studio aesthetic at the time. Disney eventually let her loose, and her aesthetic can be strongly seen in Cinderella, Peter Pan, and especially Alice in Wonderland.
vimeo
Evelyn Lambart (1914-1999)
Hearing-impaired Canadian animator who worked with Norman McLaren on several pieces that the Canadian government would later declare masterworks. She directed her own films, making her one of the first women in animation to take the director’s chair. She was known for scratching up film stock to create “jazz” like patterns, the sort of thing you’d later see in Fantasia, Donald in Mathmagic Land, and the like.
vimeo
Lotte Reininger (1899-1981)
German director who created the technique of silhouette animation, preceding Disney by 10 years. Started out making titles for movies and moved on to make her own animated feature, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, in 1926! As for the rest of her career, well - watch the short.
vimeo
Claire Parker (1906-1981)
Created the “pinscreen” animation technique, where 240,000 tiny metal rods were manually manipulated in and out of a board in order to create an animation – think tweaking pixels by hand. She and she alone owned the patent on it.
vimeo
Alison de Vere (1927-2001)
One of the first women to work in British animation, and was design director for The Yellow Submarine. She went on to create many animated shorts at a commercial studio, winning prizes for virtually almost every single one of them. She is often credited as Britain’s first female animation auteur.
(much credit must go to cartoonbrew for posting about this in the first place - thanks, y’all!)

one thing i have always loved about gintama characters is how they (mostly?) aren’t reduced to mere tropes. they are extremely multifaceted, and they face forward, regardless of who they used to be, or their flaws/traits/qualities/etc (be them justifiable or not), or what people may call them; all that while \knowing\ what lies deep inside them, even if they deny themselves or if they can’t figure it out yet.
they just learn how to be themselves. how to be \honest\ with themselves. thats exactly the kind of writing i need.

one more headcanon!
Kenshin and Kaoru have 3 kids - 2 boys and a girl (a la Meijiyaya’s Longer Than Forever). There’s been a competition going on between Yahiko and Sano for the longest time about who’s the kids’ favorite uncle. Sano wins with Kenji, because Yahiko is Kenji’s teacher and there’s only so much he can be nice to the kid. And Uncle Sano is mad fun and curses like a sailor and lets him drink sake. Yahiko wins with the younger boy, Shinta (the quietest of the three; a little withdrawn), and always goes to Yahiko for solid advice (as opposed to Sano’s lousy ones that end up embarrassing him in front of his friends all the time). So it really boils down to the one little girl, Kaori, and they still haven’t cracked the code. Kaori loves all the attention--Aunt Megumi even eggs her on sometimes--and she’s never letting them know that Grandpa Hiko is really her favorite.

5 Rurouni Kenshin headcanons
#1:
Kaoru used to have a hard time believing Yahiko would stay. She’s had students leave her too many times (for too many reasons--she’s a woman, they didn’t like the Kamiya Kasshin philosophy, they only wanted to hit on her, that fake Battousai scandal) that when Yahiko came along she half expected him to leave at some point too. Because somewhere along the way she got confused and started blaming herself--she thought she was the bad teacher, that’s why everyone left. But Yahiko stayed. Yahiko stayed for a very long time, and seeing him in her dojo never fails to reaffirm her belief in herself.
#2:
Kenji is four when Kenshin finally sees Saitou again. He’s with Kenji in the market, getting some tofu, when something nags at his now rarely used swordsman senses and tells him to focus, hard. He turns around and sees Saitou outside a soba stall, smoking. Almost immediately, Saitou turns his gaze towards him and they lock eyes. But barely a moment passes and Saitou looks away--it’s like he didn’t even notice him. Kenshin looks away too and half-smiles to himself as he picks up the tofu, grabs Kenji’s hand and returns home.
#3:
Shortly after his Genpuku, Yahiko starts wandering. To see the world, to expand his horizons, to really just grow up. He stops in a small fishing town near Kobe one day, to the surprise of one Seta Soujiro. Yahiko doesn’t recognize Soujiro of course, but Soujiro knows the boy, and notes the sakabatou he’s carrying with great interest. His hands itch for his own sword, the desire to test the mettle of the sakabatou’s inheritor burning hot in his veins for a quick moment. But he finishes his dango quickly and leaves the town instead, a vague worry slowly surfacing in his heart about the sakabatou’s former owner’s health. Three months later, Seta Soujiro arrives in Tokyo.
#4:
When Kenshin and Kaoru got married, many people cried at the wedding. Misao, Tae and Tsubame were the usual suspects, but Chief Uramura was seen wiping away some tears, and Maekawa had his head bowed the entire time. Sano had returned to Japan for the wedding (how could he miss it?) and made some loud, off-color joke about more people crying at the wedding than Kaoru’s funeral during Jinchuu. Needless to say, many people reacted badly and were ready to attack him. But Kaoru got to him first--running up to him in her wedding kimono, she socked him, hard. “There’s more to come later. Now shut up and let me finish my wedding.”
#5:
Kenshin and Kaoru’s first kiss was awkward and fumbling and caught both of them off guard--neither was really sure what to do or how far they should go. There were a lot of ‘um’s and ‘er’s after, and being the shy people they were they left it at that and went back into their separate rooms, faces beet-red. After about an hour of trying to sleep, Kaoru gives up and stomps over to Kenshin’s room. She slides open the door and says, “Kenshin? That... that was really okay. I--I mean, it was okay for me. I, ah, shouldn’t have... Sorry, you probably wanna sleep--It’s late, isn’t it? But was it okay? Are we okay?” And before she can start on another ramble Kenshin moves towards her and tenderly cups her face and slowly--oh-so-tantalizingly slowly--leans towards her and presses his lips against hers. Their second kiss is loving and slow and filled with intent--and there was really no doubts left after that.
