Happy May the 4th to all Star Wars fans :)
But you know what else is today?
IT IS THE EVE OF SAINT GEORGE'S DAY! DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT TO-NIGHT, WHEN THE CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT, ALL THE EVIL THINGS IN THE WORLD WILL HAVE FULL SWAY? DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING, AND WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO?

it's the biggest mischaracterization ever that jonathan harker ends up being taken as a clueless man, when literally in the second diary entry of the BOOK he's so uncomfortable and worried he says goodbye to his fiancée.
#dude honestly#I didn’t realize by day TWO he’s already like ‘oh I might die here’#Dracula#Dracula daily#jonathan harker

A little Halloween painting of the Harkers, because they deserve one together! I love drawing vintage photographs.
I'm going to shill for myself here, but if you like the Harkers, please consider listening to the first episode of my partner's and my new horror-fiction podcast, The Holmwood Foundation. Starring the Harkers in a prominant role and very much in gothic love!

But wait… this hasn’t happened before, right? This is his first trip as a solicitor…
So why the feeling of déjà vu?

Related to my last post; I will be tagging spoilers on posts going into the new season, but only on posts that reference material that happens after wherever we are in the novel. So if you’re a few days behind you might get some spoilers but anything major will be tagged.
#basically if you’re keeping up with the emails I won’t post anything you don’t know about#if I post things referencing later in the novel for the returning people it’ll be tagged#if anyone has an issue with that or a better system lmk#dracula daily#dracula

As we approach Dracula Daily season again, just a gentle reminder that, even though it has been going for several years, there are still people who are doing this for the first time, have never read Dracula before, and would like to have as spoiler free an experience as possible, so please tag spoilers!
I know it's a little ridiculous to tag spoilers for a 128 year book, but the chronological reading is so important to Dracula Daily and it's good for people to be able to choose their own experience. It can be a bit alienating if they can't explore the tag and interact with other people excited about the same thing for fear of spoilers. If you're not following along closely and just enjoy keeping up with the memes (which is how I usually do), just try your best to see if what you're posting/reblogging is something that's already happened this year or not.
#yes!! please!!#and if I ever post something that needs a spoiler tag and I forgot lmk!#I hate the excuse that the book is old. it’s not that much effort and it makes the reading experience more enjoyable for others#dracula daily

mina doesn't know she's bisexual, she just thinks everyone feels that way about lucy, which, given her sample size, is kind of fair. jonathan is dimly aware that he's got Something going on and he tries to pursue it very small safe ways but he still can't really put his finger on it beyond "women??? men???”. jack is a horny leaf in the stream of creation and would probably realize that he's a little too focused on his besties' "manhoods" if he ever got two full weeks of consistently good sleep, but until then he puts it down exhausted mania.
#keep going#the whole cast is bisexual you could do this for every character#and I would read them all

I respect and understand other character interpretations but imo the thing that gives mina the most sparkle is her diabolical case of internalized misogyny. she just loses her sauce if you take it all out with no fuss. she describes her socially assigned gender role as biting into her, it was draining her lifeblood long before any vampires entered the picture. she can be awesome and cool and better at most things than the men in her life (because she canonically is), but she needs to do that while passing through the nine circles of victorian class/gender hell. this is a suicidal sopping wet cat of a fledgling vampire who once gave up her shoes to her best friend while rescuing her from being ravished in her sleep and then covered her own feet in mud to avoid the risk of anyone noticing she was barefoot and maybe thinking she looked weird. she's problemgirl.
#given that there’s a whole part of the book where the moral is that societal misogyny causes harm#I feel like it’s important to acknowledge how societal misogyny presents itself in both the male and female characters#Mina having conflicting views and actions on how women are ‘supposed’ to act gives her a more complete arc when both she and the boys learn#that giving women some agency can be a good thing actually#also love the idea of her being trapped in a prison of internalized misogyny that is slowly sucking her life away before a vampire expulsion#*could not expulsion weird autocorrect#also I think similar themes of being trapped by feminine standards are discussed more with Lucy’s character (rightfully so)#let’s get Mina in on that too#I love gender studies#anyway#Dracula#Dracula daily#Mina harker#Mina Murray

Just finished reading the OG Dracula and my biggest complaint is that Bram didn’t let Mina shoot a bunch of vampire-controlled wolves from within her Holy Wafer Protection Circle
