If you could say one thing to Kiritsugu right now, what would it be?

How could he ever narrow it down? There’s so much he never had a chance to tell Kiritsugu in life, let alone in death.

Thanks for everything. Thanks for nothing. Thanks for trying, if nothing else.

It is thanks to Kiritsugu that his life and death turned out the way they did. The things he said, the things he did, the things he never dared put words to... all of it affected him in one way or another, culminating in the wretched existence of  EMIYA  -  an ignorant fool who clung to ideals he could never hope to understand, as they were never truly his own.

Were it not for Kiritsugu, the Heroic Spirit EMIYA would never have come into being. The nameless child would have simply perished along with everyone else and found a peace in death that Archer will never know.

It is all too easy to curse Kiritsugu’s very existence, as it led to the mistake of his own. But when he’s offered an opportunity to say what he wants, what he means, what he feels beneath the pain and frustration and betrayal —

He hesitates.

“Nothing I have to say to him is as simple as you make it sound.”

He may not know what he would say, but he knows that much, at least.

A big arm wrapped around the other’s shoulders, pushing them along as Rider began to move.

“Let’s fix that! Come, have a drink with me! I’m sure that’ll loosen whatever you have up your ass at the moment.”

“Is  that  all you want?” Strange though it is, he seems earnest - but that isn’t enough to convince Archer, who digs his heels into the ground in an effort to resist movement. “Do you  really  think I’d accept that offer after all of this?”

“For the sake of simplicity, it’s Archer. Don’t expect to bully anything else out of me.”

It’s true that she had her doubts about Archer wanting to remain as they were, but with what he’s said now, there’s no room left for doubt. The silent tension between the both of them has faded and Rin relaxes because while he’s always had a bad habit of being roundabout in saying things, she knows that she doesn’t need to worry about him leaving her anymore. “You’re right. I’m glad that you’re able to see reason, at least. There are plenty of dangerous servants here…I’ve even had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting a few.”

“This went…better than I thought it would. I should learn to have a little more faith in you. But you’ve always been fickle, it can’t be helped.” She missed him, odd as it was. Their relationship would always be a complicated one, but good all the same. “My only condition is you better come whenever I call you, it’s unacceptable for you not to.”

　　 The peace that settles in as the tension fades lasts only until Rin opens her mouth once more. Perhaps he shouldn’t be prepared by the turn the conversation takes, but for better or for worse, Rin has never been entirely predictable. That’s the way it’s always been, though. If things were to change now, it may be a cause for concern, grail war or not.

　　 “Oh, I’m sorry. Am I the one who decided to leave you behind in the middle of a  war  to take someone on a date?  I seem to remember things differently.” At best, this is the pot calling the kettle black. At worst... well, things are as they should be, so it’ll work out in the end.

🔫 “How predictable. You can’t even answer a simple question without retorting one in return.” Expect no better, in all truth. Younger form had still clung to ideals despite their usual demeanor. It only seemed natural for a nobody to defend them self.

“You will need to adjust your perception eventually, half baked.” Silly games like so? Hahaha… hahahaha… “Those who died in result didn’t appreciate it.” Standing as if superior, certainly didn’t help younger’s cause. “I know what I am. Yet you continue to struggle against as if you believe it’ll actually make a difference. Still holding onto hope, aren’t you?”

　　 The man before him speaks plainly, but with purpose. Each word has the weight of one that has been carefully chosen for the sole purpose of getting under his skin. One more naive than he might allow him some benefit of the doubt on the grounds that this is mere coincidence, but Archer knows - he has learned, been forced to learn, that the world is not kind. 

　　 “It’s no business of yours,” he spits. Never mind that every word of it is  accurate  and  true  in a way that pierces what’s left of his heart. “Just who the hell are you?”

Lancer? Ah, so that was it. He knew that guy ( the older one? the younger one? ah, it didn’t matter ). Even outside of Chaldea, it seems he isn’t free from similarities. The other’s sharp quips earn an eyebrow raise, expression unchanging for the most part as red eyes bore into the smaller servant.

“The hell is that? I could care less about your useless knowledge. Show it off to someone who cares.”

A roll of the shoulders, and sharp teeth flash as lips twist downward a bit into a frown. “If you’re looking for the original, you’re in the wrong place. All we share is a face and a name, so don’t bother confusing me with him.”

　　 “Looking for the original?” Heaven forfend anyone but the poor mutt’s  Master  would go off in search of him. Until he has a proper weapon in hand, Archer has no intention of seeking him out. Maybe then it would be worth the time and aggravation.

　　 This one, whoever or whatever he is, seems more than powerful enough to take him out without any armaments. ( So many are, save for Casters and Assassins. Without weapons of his own, provided through his own magecraft or otherwise, there is precious little he can do on a battlefield. ) It’s unfortunate, as Archer already feels that familiar urge... for no matter what he claims, he is still the same man at his core.

　　 The danger matters little, as evidenced by Archer’s blatant disregard. “A name, a face, and a history. Isn’t that what makes the two of you who you are?” No class container should alter that, he’s fairly certain.
