les mis in paris addendum: a couple days after my first trip to 16 rue de la verrerie (marius and courfeyrac’s apartment), i was in the neighborhood again and happened to walk past…only to notice that the big gates next door were open, allowing me access to the courtyard.

now, the marais (where #16 is located) is notable in paris for having survived a lot of the redevelopment of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. so this courtyard is probably as it looked in 1832, when “courfeyrac” and “marius pontmercy” would have lived there. i also took photos of the side of #16 so you could see what the building looks like, as well as an antique water fountain that would have been used back in the day.

DISCLAIMER: PLEASE DO NOT GO BREAKING INTO PEOPLE’S COURTYARDS AND PRIVATE RESIDENCES. in this particular case, there was a shop at the back of the courtyard, allowing public traffic. HISTORY IS NO EXCUSE FOR TRESPASSING.
