and...you're right on!!! dropping this under a cut cause whoops my yapping. anyways.

They literally have pouches between their feet for keeping their eggs and chicks warm!!

And penguins are social birds overall in general...but for all of them it's most important to emperors!! most species aren't actually arctic birds! they're all shaped to navigate the waters and keep warm in the cold oceans, but emperors need that warmth most of all!!

Throughout the winters, they have to huddle together to keep warm enough, and are pretty dang smart about rotating out and in to share the warmth and the brunt of the cold!!

Anyways THE LENGTHS THESE BIRDS GO THROUGH FOR THEIR KIDS

The dads incubate the eggs while the moms go stock up on foo. While nursing the eggs, they have to keep the egg with them at all times!! Meaning they cant go out and eat!! They stay there MONTHS without eating to keep their kids warm!!! They typically lose like half their body weight before their mates make it back!!

Not to mention that the moms also need to be tough and on their game!!! Once they've eaten they've got a loooong trek back and have to avoid predators like leopard seals wanting to hunt them! But they've got ot make it back, their mates AND chicks are relying on them to make it to survive!!

Emperors also....have a hard time telling each other apart based on looks. So they form I kid you not IDENTITY PARADES to find their mates.

- While they all look pretty similar, even to each other, their calls are a different story. They've got indiviual calls they're able to identify each other with. THis goes for both finding their mates and their chicks as they grow!

And hey! Penguins and their mates right? Raising chicks they need to have a LOT of trust in each other. As when mom makes it back and it's her turn to hold onto and watch the chick, they need to do so quickly and carefully!! The chicks dont have their fluffy down yet and need to be out of the cold as much as possible! So even a simple transfer can be a big deal.

Also! Emperors and kids! If they lose their kids, that instinct to parent them is still there and going! They'll desperetally want to adopt! So! Huh! Hey!

Seriously. If multiple potential adopters come across one orphan chick, they'll FIGHT with each other to try to parent that chick. In worst case scenarios sometimes they even end up trampling the poor chick. SO. HUH. HEY.

This has nothing to do with JS but emperor penguins grow to full size before loosing their downs and I love showing off this specific picture. How are penguins real I love them.

They do slide on their bellies when they can! It's.....considerably faster than walking. Of course their REAL speed is in the water. They'll swim at like 9km and hour! Dunk him in the water. Sopping! wet! bird!

Also I'd like to mention theyre just????? Strong???? One penguin has gone on record having just....thrown around 6 grown men trying to capture it. They had to tackle it ALL TOGETHER. like what.
