things you might not know about ao3 but seem obvious in hindsight:
ao3 = archive of our own (three o’s)
the logo is “ao3” stylized
orphan_account isn’t one author but rather the name all accounts are given once they’re orphaned
bookmarks are public by default
once given, kudos can’t be taken back
drafts get automatically deleted quickly so use a different drafting platform to avoid that
you need an ao3 account to view locked fics and it doesn’t take long to apply & get one
ao3’s archive software is open source and free to use
you can change the way the site looks on your phone/computer
ao3 is run entirely on donations
no really, read why here

psa that there’s no reason to be shy or nervous abt commenting bc if an author genuinely did not want comments they would simply disable commenting on their end. if you have the capability to comment that means they’re welcome and that you should <3

You should include intersex people in your activism not bc we prove bio essentialists are wrong but bc we are people who deserve rights 👍

Most annoying thing to remember is that you're litterally just a homosapien. You're just a very smart animal. If you feel like shit, imagine you're an exotic pet for some alien species and do what they'd do to keep you healthy. You gotta be well cared for. Animal abuse is a crime for a reason
"My pet human, Greg, hasn't left his bed in a long time. He's just scrolling his phone all day" Greg needs enrichment. Add enrichment in his enclosure and take him on walks
"Greg has been super lethargic and sad recently for seemingly no reason" Greg need vitamins, take him outside for some vitamin D and fresh air. Perhaps a picnic
"Greg won't sleep even though he's been super lethargic" Greg needs a schedule, especially for the lights in his enclosure.
"Greg has been super distant recently and keeps crying to sad music" Humans are pack animals, he needs to hug another human and hang out. Perhaps pack bond with a rock together
"Greg has been flailing around and panicking, his breathing is way faster than it should be" Greg is overwhelmed. Take Greg out of the situation and give him time to calm down. Perhaps somewhere cozy with tea and a movie
"Greg won't do what he needs to do" Train him. Humans do great with positive reinforcement, give him little treats when he's doing good
"Greg he's been super anxious and tired, he can't seem to enjoy his days" Humans needs to move around. Give Greg something to exercise with. Things like stretching, weight lifting, walking, or even dancing will help
"Even though I've taken really good care of Greg, he still has been having issues" Greg is ill, take him to the doctor. You might need a specialist (therapist, optometrist, oncologist, etc)
I know it feels patronizing, and I know it feels embarrassing or that you're "just giving into the clichés", but you are literally just a creature. You need to sleep/eat on time, you need enrichment, and you need to take care of your social needs. Humans are complicated animals, but they are also beautiful and all deserve proper care. This obviously isn't a perfect analogy, nothing is, but if you saw your friend taking care of their pet the way you take care of yourself, would you be concerned?

In honor of Juneteenth, I compiled some great songs by black artists
I highlight genres other than rap/hip-hop, as I don't see them get enough love from non-black people. If the list seems overwhelming, I'd recommend picking a genre of your liking, or the songs marked blue, which are my personal favorites. Hopefully, you find some new music and add a couple of these to your playlists
Jazz: Lester Leaps in [Live at Carnegie Hall] by Charlie Parker (1949); The Star-Crossed Lovers (aka Pretty Girl) by Duke Ellington (1957); Springsville by Miles Davis (1957); Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter (1966); The Black Messiah [Live at The Troubador] by Cannonball Adderley (1971)
Vocal Jazz: Unforgettable by Nat King Cole (1954); Autumn in New York by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong (1957); Lover Man by Billie Holiday (1958); Don't Go To Strangers by Etta Jones (1960); Work Song by Nina Simone (1967)
Soul: I Say a Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin (1968); Tired of Being Alone by Al Green (1971); Grandma's Hands by Bill Withers (1971); Home Is Where The Hatred Is by Gil Scott-Heron (1971); Someday We'll All Be Free by Donny Hathaway (1973)
Funk: That Lady, Pts. 1 & 3 by The Isley Brothers (1973); Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang (1974); I Want You by Marvin Gaye (1976); Some Love by Chaka Khan (1978); Dreaming About You by The Blackbyrds (1994)
Disco: You Saved My Day by Cheryl Lynn (1978); Good Times by CHIC (1979); Hot Stuff by Donna Summer (1979); Give It To Me Baby by Rick James (1981); It Should Have Been You by Gwen Guthrie (1982)
R&B: Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down) by Billy Ocean (1981); Outstanding by The Gap Band (1982); Sweet Love by Anita Baker (1986); Real Love by Mary J. Blige (1992); I Get Lonely by Janet Jackson (1997)
Neo Soul: Lady by D'Angelo (1995); Didn't Cha Know by Erykah Badu (2000); Locked Inside by Janelle Monáe (2010); Where Did I Go? by Jorja Smith (2018); Stay High by Brittany Howard (2019)
Alternative: Charcoal Baby by Blood Orange (2018); umbrellar by Dua Saleh (2020); All My Girls Like To Fight by Hope Tala (2020); Neptune by We Don't Ride Llamas (2022); Outta My Mind by chlothegod (2023)
Listen and support black musicians, and the black people around you, specially those close to you. Listening to music is not doing enough to support or boost black people's voices, so, please read and share what they have to say, particularly today, while also respecting and immersing yourself in their art and culture

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

unreal unearth truly is the album of all time. the recontextualisation of the divine comedy to partly become criticism of today’s capitalism, colonialism and warfare, and to partly become a telling of your unhappy love story. It’s perfection.

something I'd like to say..
i dont care if someone's preferred pronouns bring you discomfort, use them or dont talk about them or interact with them.
"but indi! it/its pronouns are dehumanizi-"
NOPE! i dont care!
"but, this person goes by he/him but dresses femininely-"
so? is it actually hurting you?
"but neopronouns are hurting the trans communi-"
transphobes and terfs are hurting the trans community!

"In recent years, there has been a rush on the internet to supply image descriptions and to call out those who don’t. This may be an example of community accountability at work, but it’s striking to observe that those doing the most fierce calling out or correcting are sighted people. Such efforts are largely self-defeating. I cannot count the times I’ve stopped reading a video transcript because it started with a dense word picture. Even if a description is short and well done, I often wish there were no description at all. Get to the point, already! How ironic that striving after access can actually create a barrier. When I pointed this out during one of my seminars, a participant made us all laugh by doing a parody: “Mary is wearing a green, blue, and red striped shirt; every fourth stripe also has a purple dot the size of a pea in it, and there are forty-seven stripes—”
“You’re killing me,” I said. “I can’t take any more of that!”
Now serious, she said it was clear to her that none of that stuff about Mary’s clothes mattered, at least if her clothes weren’t the point. What mattered most about the image was that Mary was holding her diploma and smiling. “But,” she wondered, “do I say, Mary has a huge smile on her face as she shows her diploma or Mary has an exuberant smile or showing her teeth in a smile and her eyes are crinkled at the edges?”
It’s simple. Mary has a huge smile on her face is the best one. It’s the don’t-second-guess-yourself option."

Not “Only my reading of canon is correct” or “Interpretations are subjective and all valid” but a secret third thing, “More than one interpretation can be valid but there’s a reason your English teacher had you cite quotes and examples in your papers, you have to have a strong argument that your interpretation is actually supported by the text or it is just wrong and I’m fine with telling you it’s wrong, actually.”

I'm gonna say it here too. Allow me to be crystal fucking clear.
It is not cowardly to stay in the closet. Full stop. You do not owe anyone any part of yourself you aren't ready to share
If you unable to come out because you fear for your safety or well-being or because you know it will cause you substantial discomfort, that is not a defect in you. It's a failure of the society in which you live and the community surrounding you.
If you just don't want to share that part of yourself, that is valid and I support you
