So, I might be back on my shit...

You've given such good trend forecasts and observations about the fandom in the past! What current patterns are you excited for? Or interested in? What's died down that you like or what's firing up that you're keen on? Ty!

So, I'm really not nearly so plugged into fandom as I was, I've just been so busy with other stuff, I really don't feel like I have a finger on the pulse in the same way. Also, the fandom has exploded and that means there's a lot more diversity in the trends, where there can be multiple things taking off at the same time.

However, based on what I do see, and just general observations about trends in reading:

So... the monsterfucker side of fandom is going strong, It's not predominant because you have enough readers who aren't particularly into fic that "weird" but it's a stable faction in fandom and now that werewolf fic has become fairly mainstream metrically both in and out of fandom, the monsterfuckers are diversifying a bit and writing less common monsters. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some multichaps with more unusual creatures than your typical veela/vampire/werewolf.

We're currently seeing some Dark Hermione and more dominant Hermione and I think we'll keep seeing that for another year or so and then fandom will swing again back to a really righteous strain of innocent possibly virgin Hermione again.

Voldemort AU's are mostly done for the moment. Everyone's ready to do something else now. Come back in two years.

We're also finishing off on the slow-burn healthy relationship. There's been notable enthusiasm for slow, solid relationship building fics, and happy family fluff fics, but I think it's peaked as a focal point and will just be an aspect of stories in the future now that it's not so much a novelty.

Vanilla Porn is also less interesting. Porn itself is not going anywhere, but we've had a lot of porn during quarantine, people are starting to get laid again they don't need fanfic in the same way. Porn is going to move into plottier fics, where it's less of a focal point, and also move into really specific or really hard kinks. The deluge of new pandemic fans has tapered off, and they're going to move into two directions, harder, darker kinks, or plottier fics. You'll see a spike in niche kinks for a while. If you know your squicks, be vigilant about checking tags. If you don't, don't be surprised if you find them in the next year, people are going to be writing what they can't find and you are going to find out there are things you do not like.

Astoria is the new fandom baby. The fandom claimed Pansy a while ago now and now it's done the same with Astoria. Astoria is the latest fandom baby. Fics needing female competition/villain will end up going elsewhere. On that note, everyone is a bit bored with Theo and his predictably tragic side-story, don't be surprised if Blaise or Adrian, or Goyle begin getting more centre stage again as Draco's friends.

More speculatively, soulmates. I see a lot of chatter about soulmates because everyone loves the idea of soulmate fics but I have yet to see dramione fandom truly, wholly take to a particular soulmate premise. It feels like one of those things that everyone agrees they want but no one will agree about what they want it to look like. They've been done straight and subverted with success but not definitively. With the size of the fandom at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone try and succeed in writing the tropey definitive soulmate fic of the fandom's dreams. Alternatively, several will emerge around the same time all with unique takes and soulmates will engulf the whole fandom for a bit.

Triad/Harems/reverse harems. This isn't happening yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if this takes off more in the next year. With all the newcomers there's going to be an inevitable point where they want to branch out, some will jump ship, others will want to stay closer to home, love triangles are not beloved so I wouldn't be surprised if it results in some triads. Also, the fandom is less straight than it historically has been, so perhaps f/f/m instead of predominantly m/f/m.

Anyway those are my totally unscientific predictions based on the sides of fandom that I see. These are just guesses, I am in no way an expert on any of this, this is just based on what conversations I see happening or not happening across fandom social media, and where I've seen fanfic swing in the past. A fandom writer could absolutely just come out a nowhere and write a fic that upends the entire fandom, precedent, and what people think they want. However, speaking as someone who joined when the fandom was smaller, that is probably trickier to do noways than it was 2+ years ago, at least to the same degree, because a bigger fandom is a more diverse fandom with more conflicting preferences about what is wanted from fic (in character, out of character, social justice, representation, female empowerment, etc). I think that universal fandom appeal is growing less common not because the appeal is shrinking but because the fandom is even bigger, which is all the more reason for writers to focus on creating the stories they legitimately enjoy crafting.
