Their Viscious Games🗡

Now ain't this some medieval ass shit? First off, the book really reminded me of the movie The Hunt because...well that's essentially what it is. But I love a good ole plot twist and I LOVE games so naturally...I liked this book too. You know how you see a movie so good it's the first movie you recommend for like damn near a year? That'll be me with this book. My poor girlfriend had to listen to me explain the entire lore of the book and if you've read my previous reviews, I can be a little all over the place.

Now it does have a bit of a slow start. But baby if you think this is just some shit about a black girl at a predominantely white private school, THINK AGAIN. Personally though, I am kinda over the 'only black girl around white people' trope like WE GEEEEEET IIIIIIIT!!! And even though without it, the layer of racial tension is gone but the classism, however, is not. I get that Adina (the main character) is supposed to stick out more because she's black (I haven't forgotten that Saint is there, she is Asian) but it's just so tired. Sometimes a girl reads a book to escape the racial tension in her real life. And The Remingtons are worth billions of dollars. They are already terrible people so they did not NEED to be white, right along with everyone else. I also get that the point is Adina is feeling like she needs to fit into this certain box. I know all of this but please. We have to find a different way to do it.

All of that being said, it's still a mad interesting book. The Ride, The Raid, The Royale. Imma let y'all figure out what that menas because again, I'm not here to tell you what the book is about. But I am saying its worth the read if you love a plot twist, and terrible people getting exactly what they deserve.

And well hell, you know what they say. You have to work twice as hard to get half as much.

Honey and Spice 📻

Miss Bolu Babalola we need another one NEOOOOOW. Very rarely do I feel so connected to a main character so quickly. Kiki Banjo is very much that girl and she is very much me. The author writes this book so flawlessly and beautiful that I'm jealous about it on many levels. Not just as an author but also as a reader. I'm sick that I won't have that first read exerience again. The way that Bolu slides in poetry couldn't be taught by a PhD level professor if they tried.

Now one thing you need to know is that Kiki Banjo runs a radio show at their college called Brown Sugar. What I love about this little tidbit is that Babalola adds in the fact that there's other organizations on campus not by telling you, but providing excerpts from their radio shows, blogs, social media posts. It's an amazing way to really have you immersed into Blackwell without giving a full blown introduction to characters that don't really matter but still drive the story forward. There's Brown Sugar, The Blackwell Beat, ProntoPic, The Teahouse, as well as texts messages littered throughout the book. Now I know it sounds like a lot for 352 pages but trust me, it isn't. It helps move the story along without unnecesarry dialogue and description which is IMPORTANT in a book like this because you just want to keep flipping the pages. If you're anything like me, when I get too excited to see how something plays out, it takes everything in me not to skip over paragraphs without any dialogue or if I see pages and pages of little to no description I'm just like ??? I truly look at this book like art. I feel like I'm reading a book and flipping through a magazine at the same time. It's a unique experience and I'm looking forward to the next book from Bolu Babalola.

Now I know you're looking at me like uhhh, what's the book about? Listen, that's what the blurb on the back of the book is for. I'm just here to tell you my thoughts on the book and if its worth the read. In my opinion, it's worth the second and third read too. A true 5 star book for me. Keep in mind that this is a romance book that features black people almost exclusively. I mean, the only non black people are mentioned very passively. You don't even know their names and that is aces in my eyes.

Oh, and they're british.

okay, but a plot where   muse a   &   muse b   are actors. they’ve been in shows together   &   after a while, they fell in   love  .  .  .   but it ended   horribly,   for whatever reason. but since they still move in the same circles, they both end up auditioning for the   same show  .  .  .   only to be casted as the   leading couple.   they had almost forgotten the taste of the other’s lips…

while tora definitely did know what she was doing when it came to the diner, she definitely didn’t like her job. she worked here solely because she felt like she owed it to her parents. after all, they’d moved from their suburban home to this trailer behind the diner, which was her parents real baby. everything went into the diner, and despite its shabby appearance, it was a 24/7 diner that always maintained a fair level of business. the female heard the plate be put up on the handoff plane behind her, the girl turning to grab it and then set it in front of the male. her eyes instantly narrowed on him from how his demeanor seemed slightly different. “a contract?” she repeated back to him, not sure if she heard it right over the apple pie. “like different then the obvious release i sign?” she wrinkled her nose, amusement twinkling in her eyes. “i’m not gonna get you drunk and take advantage of you, i mean unless you want.”

tora had always been good at reading him, not that he didn’t wear his feelings on his sleeve in the first place. he licked his lips, busying himself with the pie for a moment. “yeah but in that release it says you aren’t drunk or high...not me.” it was clear that in his profession, well in most, that you wouldn’t come to work under any sort of influence. he rolled his eyes at her last statement though. she was such a jokester and he almost never took her seriously. tora was a pretty confident person so he felt like if she was into him she would have definitely said something by now. she’d never been one to hold her tongue in front of him before. he finished off his eggs and took another gulp of coffee before looking up at her. “it’s not that i don’t trust you, you know? its just with circumstances like this, i just gotta protect myself. can’t exactly afford a lawsuit.” well he probably could afford a small one- he was a pretty famous tattoo artist and celebrities typically paid a pretty penny for his work but that didn’t mean he was trying to blow it on something unnecessary. he was just hoping he wasn’t damaging an important friendship.

after the dinner rush, they had another little pop of business that had kept tora busy, which was good because it’d only make time go by faster. and it was true! because soon enough she saw slade walking through the door, exchanging a grin with him as he took a seat at the counter. “scrambled eggs and apple pie.. quite the combo.” she mused, scribbling down the order on her pad before she gave him a little wink and turned around to put the ticket in the window. once the ticket was up, she went to pour him some fresh coffee, leaving just an inch or so of room from the lip of the mug incase he needed cream or sugar. no that slade really seemed like a cream and sugar guy, but also she wouldn’t be suprised if he.. surprised her. sometimes he could be a bit of an enigma. passing by him the other way, she set the cup down in front of him before she went around back into the kitchen, coming back a moment later with a glistening piece of apple pie. the plate clinked lightly on the counter as she set it in front of him. “eggs are getting plated now, you want anything for your coffee?”

he knew his food choices got him weird stares more often than not. he thought it was a blessing. the slender man shrugged, “you know i don’t have that type of stomach. i can eat whatever and i’m all good. which is great cause i crave such crazy things together.” he watched her move with ease around the diner, which he should have expected. and not to be...so ordinary but tora seemed really out of place in here for some reason to him. while she moved with grace and an obvious knowledge of where everything was, aesthetically she just didn’t fit and wondered if anyone had ever told him that. he certainly wasn’t going to be the one to, just in case she liked it here. he tore open seven sugar packets and dumped them into his coffee before taking a long sip. he smiled at the pie before looking up at her but not meeting her eyes. he was nervous. “all good babe.” he said softly, biting his lip before taking the fork and dipping into the dessert. “so um...i kinda need you to sign a contract.” he murmured before stuffing his face.
