A Death in the Gunj - Movie Review by DC!
There is Cinema about Stories and then there is Cinema about Moments, experinces, emotions etc. A Death in the Gunj is one such cinema that beautfully knits the Human emotions, relationships and bondings. Its about those little childhood memories of a vacation, to your Nani's place for example, told straight from a Storybook, where nothing happens in for real, but then the moments bind you and keep you glued to the story. Konkana Sen's Directorial Debut is about a family's vacations in McCluskieGung(so the name Gunj) set in 1970s, against a picteresque location. The film is a gem and certainly one of the finest films to come out in 2017. And its surely worth all the hype it generated. More than the story, its about the stalwart performances that light up this sweet little film. Each and every character is perfectly etched and given a proper chance, including the maids. Gulshan Deviaya as Nandu the Big bro, holds the fort well. He is impatient as well as commanding, but at the same time, ready for everything for this Friend Vikram(Ranbir Shorey), including ignoring his illicit relationships with Mimi(Kalki). Tiloattama Shome as Bonnie is brilliant, a (over)caring mother, a bold wife and complements Nandu very well. She was brilliant in Hindi Medium and she is so natural here. Just give her the role and see her fit into the character. Ranbir Shorey sizzles as Dominating and flirtatious Vikram. Thankfully, an actor like him is back in reckoning again with Moh Maaya Money and now ADITG. He outshines others with not such a Big role but he makes his presence felt to a good extent. Kalki as Mimi is the weakest character of all. As a Flirtatous and Jealous but seducing, she plays her part to perfection, whatever is expected of her character. Tanuja and Om Puri are so natural in their respective roles. Jim Sarbh is wasted. I felt as if his character was really required. Arya Sharma as Tani is excellent. Among all the heavyweights, the Film belongs to the 'under-performing' Braveura Performance by Vikrant Massey. As Shutu, he gets to play so many emotions, that of a Loser(from a brilliant student), a silent, a bullied Adult who is labelled as a kid, as per the Adults in the house convenience. You feel totally connected to Shutu and feel for him. This is one of the most brilliant performances by a starter, I have seen in most recent times. Shutu's chemistry with Tani is cute. I will be disappointed, if Vikrant is not nominated for Best Actor. That leaves asking for more from him and I will surely wait for his forthcoming movies. The climax, though predictable, is the icing on the cake and leaves you spellbound. Its been two days since I watched ADITG and I am still in awe of Vikrant massey's character as Shutu and Equally brilliant performance by him. If you have a flavour for Good Cinema, do watch it! My rating : 4/5

MOM Movie Review by DC!
MOM is the 'Second Comeback' movie for yesteryears' Superstar Sridevi, after ENGLISH VINGLISH! The Trailer was intriguing, bold and set expectations. But does MOM live upto expectations and Hype? Read on to find out... Let me get straight to the point. ENGLISH VINGLISH was a Beautiful and much better film for Sridevi. MOM could have been the 'Mother of Comebacks' for Sridevi but then it falls way short of expectations. Not only the film is predictable but is flawed too. Even the Brilliant Trio of Sridevi, Nawazuddin and Akshaye Khanna could not save this with such weak and predictable storyline. However, its not that the film is not watchable. MOM has its moments and there are scenes that haunt, shock and disturb you, plus the performances are a plus, that makes MOM a definite watch if not a Must watch. The first half takes time to build up story and second half is mostly a Revenge Saga. The only thing that the audience expects is an Edge of the seat Thriller, as the film is toutd to be, but this is where MOM disappoints and Fairly predictable and Over Dramatic Climax only spoils the show further. For the performances, the film belongs to Sridevi and she gets varied emotions to play. Neglected for being a Stepmom but still patiently caring, Devastated, Angry, Guilty, since she is Sridevi so she gets to play all of them right for most of the time but unlike ENGLISH VINGLISH, she is over melodramatic at places too. That still doesnt take away credit for owning MOM. Also the accent for most part resembles South Indian speaking Hindi. Nawazuddin, I dont know what to say of this man. You give him a character and he will get into it, completely owning it. MOM is no exception. After Sridevi, Nawaz as DK, is the saving grace of MOM. In fact, in some places, he outshines her. Accolades for yet another great performance. Akshaye Khanna is marred by poorly written character, especially in first half, while he still had some.job to do in the second. And he does good in what is expected of him. But could have been a better etched character Another Fine performance comes from Sajal ali as Arya. Doesnt look like a newcomer, while portraying her emotions beautifully. Out of the Bad Men, Abhimanyu Singh sizzles as Dreaded Jagan. He appears pretty late in second half but makes most of the opportunity. Rest of the cast is upto the mark. And yes ,full marks for the Brilliant Background Score that is Deep, Dark, Disturbing for most of the places. In nutshell, MOM is entirely watchable but be prepared to ignore the flaws and appreciate the performances by Sridevi and Nawazuddin. Verdict : If PAA is PINK, then MOM is RED! My Rating : 3.25/5
