Hugging Things. My practice involves a physical dialogue with materials. This body of work explores the absence of physical touch we have experienced during the pandemic. By casting hugs, and the liminal space that exits between people, and making ‘hugged objects’, I attempt to create a sense of communitas; signifying solidarity between our shared, lived experience of a year without meaningful physical interaction. When a barrier is put up, there is a stronger need for the thing we cannot have; when our right to touch those we love is taken away, what fills that absence and provides that comfort when it is most needed? By making a hug a solid, tangible thing, I hope to highlight the importance that these haptic interactions have on our well-being and how they can nurture our relationships within our social circles. The tactility of making with my chosen materials - clay, paper, plaster, and textiles offers an embodied and emotive making journey that is integral to the conceptual layers of this project.

This is something that I wanted to try with the hugged objects just to see if it said anything. The black and yellow tape signifying the social distancing rules. I think there is something uncanny about it and the little objects emulate people waiting in the queue for the supermarket or something. I don't think this will be included in my final folio as the project has developed in other ways which no longer speak about this anymore.

These were the photos I took the other week when I projected the words on to the objects (before they exploded) The images are CR2 files and photoshop won't open on my lap because the scratch disks are full (?) I've tried to clean up my MacBook and remove stuff to create space however its still not working. So i've just took some screen shots to show the images here as I didn't love how they turned out and don't think the projection was the right thing for this work (therefore I don't see the point in torturing myself trying to get photoshop to work never mind sit and edit them on photoshop, which is also a form of torture!)

Absolutely delighted to say that a hug cast worked!!!!! The big boy has picked up the detail of the hands and I couldn't be more delighted!!
It definitely reminds me of a tombstone type structure and I've been thinking about potential titles. I originally wanted to call it Touch Hunger but I kinda like the idea of In Memorial.. I'm not sure. It's a work in progress.
I did have a thought of installing it as a sort of shrine with flowers and candles etc to represent a memorial to a year without hugs but Alan says I should let the viewer come to that conclusion for themselves rather than shoving it down there throats which I totally agree with.
But it's something I've always been quite fascinated by, shrines and communal places of remembrance. There is an energy in those places that I find interesting.

Managed to sweet talk the jannies into giving me this stuff for photo shoot tomorrow. I really wanted to play around with the social distancing thing with my objects just to see what happens so it'll tick something off of my mental checklist.

"Ceramics as a medium lends itself well to a consideration of the notion of fragmentation; it is a vulnerable material that disintegrates easily yet it also survives and endures in spite of any damage or disfiguring to which it is subjected, either through accident or design. At the same time the idea of the fragment provides an invaluable focus for a consideration of the material basis of artworks and of the ways in which the choice of a medium such as ceramics, or indeed any medium, plays a significant role in the realisation of an artist’s intentions and in the meaning of the finished piece."
Aileen emailed me about fragments as a dialogue in feminism, which I did not know about so now I am doing a bit of research into in terms of ceramics to see if this is the potential missing link in my project? I have been struggling to process and put in to words how final body of work presents itself...
With the fragmented pieces of ceramics and its relation to body, particularly the female body, there is another conversation happening or appearing. Which all leads back to the reason I began casing hugs in the first place - becoming a mother.
....... ?????

At the same time as casting the big hug we filled one of my fragmented ceramics hugs with plaster to turn it into a complete solid. Thanks to my helpers and the hilarity that came with this process. 😅

Last step was to pour the last layer and gently place the other sheet of paper on top, tap to get in firmly in the plaster and smooth off in hopes of eradicating air bubbles.
