this specific dialogue has been talked about before but something that i think is fun to think about is how, even in SS and VW, dimitri will definitely be immortalized as a faerghan folk hero. generations of faerghans will tell their children about the one-eyed demon who protected the townsfolk from invading soldiers, and in AM, that same demon turned out to be their prince and he became the savior king!! wow

Thinking about how when Alear brings Marth back but under Fell control Marth still smiles at them even though he can't speak. Thinking about how Marth says in Heroes that even under Fell power he remembers caring for Alear. Thinking about how their bond transcends Fell power so thoroughly.

I love engage. I love it. my first fire emblem game.

BUT

the story is stolen from every other game.

child of bad dragon with no/ few memories who has been confined, mother dies, has butlers/retainers who are obsessed with them, has to get the royals on their side, has a weird secret-ish relative lady who is mysterious and powerful and haunted, fights bad dragon, bad dragon eats other baddie, opens a hole in space, kills the main character who then sees people who previously died who urge them to keep going, main character comes back to have a final battle in space against evil dad dragon. Also the dead mother comes back as a possessed entity you have to fight and once defeated has a moment of clarity where she says she loves/ is proud of child, then dies for real.

I just described Fire Emblem Fates Revelation. But you could easily mistake it as Engage. Because Engage did the exact same thing.

Royal has to go to each nation to collect Maguffin before final confrontation - awakening

when playing through Warriors (the original), I got the weird ah... engage copied this...

when playing through each route in fates, it was entirely copied by engage most of the time. It was insane.

when playing awakening, it also was full of engage's 'plot points'

Engage is great as a celebration game, but if you take away everything it has copped from the other games, you don't have a game. Which is fine. But it's not particularly special or standalone, and definitely leaves a weird taste in your mouth if you play it first and then play other fire emblem games.

Three houses on the other hand is a fresh new fascinating take on different routes, different characters, a wide and enthralling world, and a twist on classic fire emblem tropes without feeling overdone. the timeskip gimmick was done SO WELL?!?!

Don't take a dump on three houses and defend engage when in terms of story, plot holes, and overall execution, it doesn't have a leg to stand on.

To be clear, I love engage. I am obsessed with my boi Alfred. Alear is such a sweet character. SOMMIE?!?! My boi alcryst was an amazing take on the anxious archer fire emblem trope.

But it has its issues. and there are a LOT of them.

I don't see anyone actually critiquing this game for all its failures, people actively shy away from it or say its stupid because of its designs and colours (which by the way I think are AMAZING and NOT one of it's flaws) or something equally surface level. Engage deserves genuine criticism.

Play Engage and enjoy it, because its fun, but remember 👏 Fates 👏 Did 👏 It 👏 First 👏.

With Fire Emblem Three Houses, you can point to themes that are carried over from other games (bonds, isolation, faith, preservation of dying cultures and peoples etc), but you can't point to a game and say: actually they did it first, better, and in a cooler way.

Point me to a timeskip Dimitri reveal in any other game, done with such awesome 'wow' factor. Point me to the crest system which people love, hate, feel conflicted towards, and abuse.

Watch the Mikoto comes back scene and then the 'Evil Lumera' scene. Tell me which one creeps you out more.

Sothis dragon form, inspired by...

Sothis (sopdet in greek) represents the Dog Star, Sirius. After research, a giant dog atop a meteor seems to represent Sothis - so the main form, a slightly more canine one, was decided.

In the first cutscene, the glowing shape kind of looks like a wing, or a bird tail so... the tail and wing vibes were done!

Colours were decided easily:

the giant lady is sothis, so I'm using her colour scheme (particularly the wing colour), and the green, pink, and gold from sothis' young form.

Completely randomly, I decided the breath weapon/ fire would be the rainbow transitioning colours from the first cutscene.

Anyway! That was an overly long description of why I doodled a dragon like that.

I have a more detailed drawing of her face, but I can't find it right now, so that'll be for another post!

as much as i dont like to be a constant negative voice here but man, it really is apparent that i have never actually and fully hated a piece of media before in the way i hate totk

i know know i talked about it alot but it feels almost weird to really have such a visceral hatred for something like this (and hopefully proof that i am not a guy that just hates everything or something, i dont love many things either (as in really really interested, thinking about it, writing things or drawing, possibly hyperfixation way, i do like things but thats more neutrally? idk how my brain works) but towards the vast majority of media and games i just feel neutral or a personal dislike for that just means im not gonna engage with it and nothing more)

and im now saying this bc i didnt expect that id react this strongly to seeing those weird new ... notes? or text stuff from totk (and even botw???) since the switch 2 released- maybe its a bit bc i was kinda surprised by it but boi i do NOT want to read anything of it, even if it gave me more stuff to be annoying about, its like scrolling past extremely smelly dog poo to me- and what may be the strangest thing is that .. that also goes for botw (which i used to love so so deeply)

i guess i myself missjudged just how much totk has really soured everything zelda for me, even if those notes say 'interesting' things i just .. cant take it seriously anymore, they were glued on afterwards, maybe its gonna try and fill any of the massive, continent wide gaps between the two games to try and artificially connect them after the fact, perhaps just some guys trying to think of what a character could say about a place with no real meaning to it, i dont know and i dont want to ................. everything feels insincere now, corporate.

(it feels like zelda too is turning from my beloved hyperfixation into something i dont want to engage with ever again, like its happend before, with other media, and i hated it happend, and now its happening again, i would lie if i said this isnt very distressing to me bc it is, even if it may look stupid, im feeling the best and happiest when i have something to latch onto like this, with this passion and care to work with the media- but it happens by chance, i dont control it, and losing it is really reminding me i am in fact very depressed with nothing to distract me anymore now. ... plus, this zelda hyperfixation felt like the longest running, most passionate, i ever had.)

Ok the voice memories need to be taken with a pinch of salt because Zelda talks about the village submerged by the artificial lake (Deya Village), but it only becomes submerged after the calamity.

Ok headcanon time...

Link was ok with Zelda being whisked away by Revali to the Goflam Hotspring for alone time together, because he knows what it's like to have a very rough job and a romantic relationship where he has to steal time to be with Mipha, so he thinks a budding secret romance between Zelda and Revali is fine actually.

The voice memos are a pointless cash grab, and I don't have a switch 2 and likely never will.

However...

Zelvali fans have WON with this one. Revali taking Zelda to a secret Rito hot spring leaving Link behind (and Link is ok with this?), the only time she is able to relax? Goflams Secret Hotspring is officially a ZelVali spot now.
