Assumptions
#CreativityHacks : #26
Some assumptions we make (I have to eat) are obvious.
Other assumptions we make may have been good at the time but may no longer be valid (I must not write in a text book).
Making assumptions is great because they allow us to think more quickly, the down side is that they constrain our thinking. Things which are obvious to you may not be obvious to other people or may not be correct at all and even questioning assumptions that are ‘correct’ may lead us to new ideas.
Some might be:
We have to compete with other companies
This is the way that we have always done it
If I do X then Y will happen
etc.
Write down some of the assumptions that you make in your life.
Ask yourself why you make these assumptions.
Try dropping some of them and see what ideas this generates.

Smell
#CreativityHacks : #25
Our sensory input tends to be dominated by our vision.
For a day try to concentrate on your sense of smell and see what you notice.

Ways of doing things
#CreativityHacks : #24
If we do something repeatedly a very strong pattern is established in the brain.
If we disturb this pattern then we will open up new possibilities.
Try writing down some of the things that you do repeatedly and how you approach them. Could there be other ways of doing these? Try them out and see what happens.
I was watching a child doing some jigsaws over a period of time. They always started by finding the edge pieces and assembling them before starting on the rest of the jigsaw. A good strategy but when they came across a jigsaw that had all black edges this strategy was by no means the best but they used it anyhow.

Do a task
#CreativityHacks : #23
We get good at the tasks that we do often to the point where we do not need to think much about them.
What about the tasks that you do not normally do? Why not try a task that normally you would let someone else do? Why not try a task which you could not possibly do?
This will awaken your thinking processes and get your mind working in a different way and from this new ideas might flow.

Try something new
#CreativityHacks : #22
Pick something that you do not normally do and have a go at it.
This will break your normal thinking patterns. Because it is new it also makes the brain pay far more attention than when you are doing normal things and new ideas may flow from this.
It might be a short term thing like reading a different type of book, getting on a bus instead of driving, brushing your teeth with your other hand etc. or longer term like buying a musical instrument, changing a room around etc. It depends on what might be new for you.

Go for a wander
#CreativityHacks : #21
A wander is not a walk. A walk has purpose and an end in sight. A wander is just for the sake of it. Try different places or different routes or places that you do not normally go but don’t plan it just see what happens as you go.
You can do this anywhere, wandering around the country or you town or even the aisles of a supermarket.
As you wander physically let your mind wander as well.
When your mind is relaxed it is often surprising the ideas that pop into it.

Spotting things
#CreativityHacks : #20
Try to reawaken your curiosity.
Spend some time each day just consciously trying to spot things. They might be things that you haven’t noticed before or things that just strike you as a little odd or just something at random or you might might choose to focus on some particular thing e.g. what people wear.
Have you ever noticed that windmills always turn clockwise (when you are looking at them from the front)? I am not going to try to explain why, I just noticed it.
Noticing things helps build up a repertoire of ideas which may or may not be useful no or in the future.

Suspending Judgement
#CreativityHacks : #19
Judging ideas too rapidly is probably the biggest way that we block our creative thinking and kill off ideas that could have led somewhere really interesting.
Suspending judgement is also probably one of the hardest things to do!
Watch out for yourself making judgements too early. Try to spot thoughts like:
That’s illegal
I tried that before and it didn’t work
This would never lead anywhere
I couldn’t do this
etc.
These make us cut off our idea generation processes before they have a chance to get going.
Let’s take one as an example: That’s illegal
It may well be illegal but if you follow your train of thought and keep developing ideas you might well come up with and idea that is legal and would work really well. (Everyone else who stopped their idea generation will never get there.)
So for the next couple of days try to spot when your judgement kicks in and when it does just keep thinking.

Scary or Exciting?
#CreativityHacks : #18
As we get older we seem to become more risk averse especially when trying new things. We may be seeing things that actually are exciting as scary and so avoid them. This could be because we have tried something in the past and it didn’t work out well for us – but things may have changed and if you tried it again then it might turn out to be exciting. It might be just because we prefer to stick with what we know. If you watch young children they seem to live in a very exciting world where everything is new and they jump in and try it with gay abandon (sometimes not too sensibly).
There’s nothing like something new or exciting to get the old creativity juices flowing. So how about trying to recapture some of that excitement? The next time you get a chance try something new or something that looks a bit scary (within reason) try it and see how it feels afterwards.

The Default Alternative
#CreativityHacks : #17
Our brains have developed over hundreds of thousands of years and our evolution has allowed it to make some decisions very rapidly. This development has a Catch 22 when it comes to thinking creatively.
One of the mechanisms that the brain has developed is what I like to call the ‘default alternative’. In order to make decisions easily and quickly we have developed this way of thinking so that our brains do not have to process too much information. We all have our own ‘default alternatives’ but by understanding our ‘default alternatives’ we can learn to switch them off when we need to.
The picture is an example of the ‘default alternative’ for all but one person. It is ‘take the escalator’ even though the stairs are not very long and it means waiting in a queue.
You can also see this effect when people are going through doors to a shop or an office building. People coming in and out of a door will queue and fight each other to get through the door that is already open rather than opening one of the other doors.
In reality a ‘default alternative’ is not an alternative at all because we don’t notice the alternatives and always take the default.
The good news is that if you spot your ‘default alternatives’ then you can start spotting the other alternatives and increase your creative ability.
What are your ‘default alternatives’?

Get on the balcony
#CreativityHacks #16
Changing your perspective on any issue is a really useful technique for changing your thinking about it and for generating new ideas.
How could you mentally ‘get on the balcony’ and get a different perspective?

The Life Cycle of Ideas : 3 of 3
#CreativityHacks #15
Continuing on from my earlier post ‘The Life Cycle of Ideas : 2’
In this case we have some ‘Neat Happens’.
From the pie diagram we can see that there are a number of ways of increasing the number of ‘Neat Ideas’ which are taken forward:
1. Increase the total size of the pie – see ‘The Life Cycle of Ideas : 2’
2. Increase the proportion of ideas which are successful
What ways can you think of doing this?
