This exhibition brings together some fifty works from very diverse cultures and periods.
Its aim is to show through art the very ambivalent relations between men and wild animals.
Men and wild animals are predators. Evolving in the same ecosystem, they compete at the dawn of civilization for the best place in the food chain. The result is a relationship of violent rivalry in which the man will win it by asserting his complete domination.
Man admires, respects and deifies the beasts, but he hunts and slaughters it, or turns it into a luxurious domestic animal. Depending on the society, it lends them protective or destructive virtues. He condescendingly attributes to them the same soul as him (nobility and intelligence) while making them remain the wild beast by excellence who contains all the mysteries and dangers of nature.

Eugène Delacroix (french)
1839
Pen and brush and iron gall ink
Overall: 5 3/16 x 7 3/8 in. (13.1 x 18.7 cm)
Met Museum of Art
One of Delacroix’s favorite activities was to sketch the lions and tigers in the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. This exquisite ink drawing combines the knowledge gained from that exercise with his observations of domestic cats to portray the arched stance of a tiger about to pounce. In addition to the pen, Delacroix employed a brush to convey bolder lines such as the rounded back, crease of the hind leg, and distinctive broad stripes of the animal’s coat. The swirling S-curve of the tail winding around the creature’s leg adds to the coiling potential of the pose.
