Uh Oh I'm Thinking About Yiling Patriarch
As much as I love attic wifing aus for WWX, I don't think there is a world he survives post Jin Zixuan. Hell, even post-war WWX is 2 feet in the grave asking for a shovel. Like, a huge part of his character is he wanted an out and ripped his hair out over those 3(?) years looking for one and came up empty EVERY SINGLE TIME. There was none.
Jiang Clan? Have his fresh sect head brother's first act be blatant betrayal to the other clans and likely ruin his sister's engagement to someone powerful and who she loves in one move. Nope, better to flat out exile himself from Lotus Pier. Lan clan? Submit to interrogation and, similarly, force their hand to betrayal the other clans while actively rebuilding their very home. No one despises the Wens more than Nie Mingjue so the Nie Clan is a nonstarter.
I feel like Jin Ling's one month was maybe his best chance to reenter society. In debt himself to the Jins (namely his BIL) as leaders and gain some peace for the Wens. But I also feel like the only way Jin Guangshan would even consider letting the Wens live is the Yin Tiger Tally which WWX would never do. He would then either destroy it and die in the process or just submit himself as a prisoner which would likely mean a lot of torture for how he did it & death. Another checkmate.
The best he could hope for was Jin Guangshan dying and Jin Zixuan becoming family head but who knew when that would happen. A part of me has even wondered if Jin Guangyao had thought about killing his father earlier to do this but I don't think he would ever let Jin Zixuan near the throne. He also isn't stupid and knew that WWX would never share his inventions willingly so...torture -> death again.
#˗ˏˋ₍ᐢ. ̫.ᐢ₎ [ WEI WUXIAN ] ; MUSINGS.#this is a larger commentary where I feel like people dismiss how truly rock bottom wwx is at this point#like the moral of the story was LWJ's love DIDN'T save him#But. I also don't think the sunshot campaign would have worked without the Yilling Patriarch UGH

Something that I feel gets lost in fanon is Hua Cheng's relationship to beauty and his true form. While he does hold a lot of hatred for his original form I think his other forms are a portrayal of what he sees as beautiful (or more accurately what he presumes Xie Lian would find beautiful.).
I don't find it a mistake the first form he truly meets Xie Lian in is a kind of hapless rich boy with a special interest in gods. He is basically being like, "Am I pretty? Do you find this pretty? These traits, this protectiveness, this mind?" And only later shows his true form once Xie Lian asks him to. If that conversation in Puqi Shrine never happened I doubt he would have ever shown Xie Lian his true face.
At least in my canon, this was the first time Hua Cheng put his face on since he had enough power to change forms. Even then, I think he adds small details to beautify it with the incident in, "Ghost King Undressed" being the closest to his human form. I also think the form he creates is part wishful thinking but that's a whole other post.
All of this to say that while Hua Cheng believes he is ugly, I think his relationship to his body goes much deeper than plain, "I'm an ugly person." To him, his original form is subhuman. A streak of red in his god's light barely worth the paint he smeared on the canvas. When he talks about making the Hua Cheng statues, he tuts over putting any actual work into them until Xie Lian asks him (notice a theme?) to. Any form he takes is in service to others (Xie Lian) or a part of the projecting a certain image that is core to his power. Hua Cheng is image based and I think that if you dismiss the forms he takes as all equal in how he views them you lose a key part of him and how he has coped with his trauma and self hatred.

take a bite. | ( JUN WU & NIE HUAISANG ) | @traittor
The heavy curtains offered not only privacy but something to soften the overwhelming white and gold of the Heavenly Palace. A central point to focus on and avoid being consumed by the splendor of such a place. More overwhelming the figure at the heart of it—
Nie Huaisang leaned forward to accept the bite to his lips. He was gentle with his teeth and let his head fall back to show the pulse of his swallow. He was starving.
Have I ever truly been full ?
He made a noise in the back of his throat at the flavor. " My Lord, thank you for allowing me a taste. "
