Prompt Spotlight: Jolly, Lolth, and Vox Machina
As we get a little further into the fest, it seems like a great time to start highlighting some of the prompts eligible for treats! These were chosen at random from the list of 156 offers, so there's more where these came from. Reminder:
Anyone can create a treat
Treats should be at least 150 words or a 'rough sketch' phase for art
Treats can be added to the main collection. They should be marked with "Summer Wildflowers Treat" in the additional tag section.
Click Readmore to check them out!
Request 1: Jester Lavorre/Mollymauk Tealeaf Requester: typhros Fic or Art: Fic Rating: Teen, Mature, Explicit Dear Critter Letter Summary:
I LOVE these two and wish we'd gotten more of a chance to see their relationship evolve! Possible prompts: A tarot reading gone silly; A tarot reading gone... oh, you know ;); Girls' night!; Discussions of faith and outlook on life, A wild night on the town! See Dear Critter letter for more! DNW: Cis or transmasc Mollymauk (I absolutely respect your personal headcanon but as this is a gift for me I request Molly be transfemme/genderfluid as he is in canon. He/any pronouns ideal!). If explicit, please no ageplay, scat, vomit, or piss.
Request 2: Lolth the Spider Queen & Opal (Critical Role); Leylas Kryn | The Bright Queen & Opal (Critical Role) Requester: Operafloozy Fic or Art: Either Rating: Any Rating Dear Critter Letter Summary:
Leylas and Opal both hate Llolth with an intense passion and are a little less stable these days. Seems like they'd be a great team! I'm sure that nothing bad would happen if they worked together. Couple this with Matt saying that Lolth would have a lot of fun as a mortal in Exandria - she would definitely enjoy messing with Opal and the Bright Queen.
Request 2:Vox Machina & Vox Machina (Critical Role), Taryon Darrington & Vex'ahlia, Scanlan Shorthalt/Pike Trickfoot, Percival "Percy" Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III & Keyleth, Taryon Darrington & Percival "Percy" Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski Requester: CitizenMocha Fic or Art: Fic Rating: General, Teen Dear Critter Letter Summary:
Percy plans to annually “do something irresponsible” with Vex and the rest of Vox Machina. Maybe the team’s first adventure after “Dalen’s Closet?” Maybe something much more recent? Anything that gets the whole team (the whole team, the specific relationships are optional but if you leave out Tary I will be so sad) together and fighting some dragons or crawling some dungeons. The other tagged ships are dynamics I particularly like, if you need a couple of characters to focus on (I elaborate more on those in my letter), but I would love something with the whole team. DNW: AUs that aren’t canon-divergent, ABO, age-play/age regression, characters using pronouns they don’t in canon, incest, major character death, (unrequested) non-canonical pairings, PWP, scat, second-person POV
None of these appealing to you? Search more prompts here Have more questions?Check out the rules here or the FAQ here!

Fun with Nominations Data!
So, I went through the nominations data for fun, and:
213 of the nominated relationships have at least one character who show up in campaign 3, as opposed to 202 for campaign 2 and 113 in campaign one.
BUT there are only 34 relationships that have at least one character who showed up Only in Campaign One, as opposed to 79 in Campaign Two and 46 in Campaign Three
7 relationships have a combination of ships that have showed up in all three campaigns - four of those involve Artagan
6 Relationships feature characters that only show up in non-main campaigns - Three from the Re-Slayers take, One from Darrington, One from EXU, and one from Wildemount Wildlings.
60 Characters show up only once. Any guesses to who they are?
More platonic relationships (210) were nominated than romantic (197)!
77 of the relationships feature more than two people
The top most nominated characters are Essek Thelyss (at 40), Ashton Greymoore (at 39), and Vex'ahlia (at 33). Caleb is right behind them with 31.
Astrid and Eadwulf are tied with 24 relationships each.
Is this piquing your interest? Well, you can go through the nominations data yourself! I've got it in a google sheet with slicers here - or, if you're on mobile, I put all of the information in an airtable here.
And hey - if any of these sound interesting, signups are open until the 23rd!

Featuring Essek's Parents: A Shadowgast Rec List
Tumblr media
This week, we have Essek's parents! Check under the cut for seven fics that feature Deirta, Essek's father or both! Don't forget to comment and kudos if you like them!
No One By That Name Lives Here Anymore by Operafloozy (13138, General) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
A few years after faking his own death, Essek runs into someone he used to know by chance in Uthodurn - A certain someone who had supposedly died his last death in Bazzoxan a few decades before.
Reccer says: This is a really interesting look at what consecution might actually imply in terms of family. It's really bittersweet and invites you to try to empathize with both sides of the central conflict instead of painting them in black and white. One might imagine that the beacons are grey for a reason. (Plus I REALLY love outsider POV!)
Tumblr media
destructive interference by atlasarcana (141219, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: Graphic Depictions of Violence
Essek is haunted by a monster in Aeor that makes him suffer flashbacks of his worst actions; Caleb helps him forgive himself and take accountability.
Reccer says: Essek's family (Deirta, his father, and Verin) play a prominent role in the character study of how Essek is the way he is.
Tumblr media
The Joys of Parenthood by Queen_of_Thornes (3945, General) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Four vignettes of Deirta Thelyss's exhausting life as mother of two precocious future leaders.
Reccer says: I'm not one for kidfic but this is just so dead-on to life with toddlers, insane and baffling little gremlins that they are, that I couldn't help but love it. It reminded me of my younger siblings when they were that age with the "How did you even think to do that" shenanigans they'd get up to so it's pretty nostalgic for me. Readers with children or who helped raise siblings will find a lot to relate to here.
Tumblr media
spare just a day for the weeping by essektheylyss (divinationwizard) (3619, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: Major Character Death
Criminal punishment among the upper echelon of the Dynasty is determined by the court, but implemented by the umavi of the den of the convicted.
Reccer says: Features a wonderfully complicated Deirta, and incredible character dynamics all around
Tumblr media
until it doesn't hurt by breitweisergallery (3800, General) Reccer's Content Notes: None
5+1 times Deirta spoke to Essek via sending.
Reccer says: The fic delves into a more loving Deirta who is distant from Essek but still loves him all the same.
Tumblr media
looking for the meaning of life by quinn-of-aebradore (15281, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Centuries later, Essek has settled into another new life. Little does he know so has Deirta.
Reccer says: A year is a long time all on its own and this fic is packed with impressions of lived history and emotion built over the course of centuries. If Deirta was once a distant parent, how might she try to bridge past gaps when a new life gives her extra perspective? If Essek has loved and lost and loved again, how might he understand his mother anew? A fascinating exploration of how time can change people and how people can change over time.
Tumblr media
The following fic received two recs!
Starburst Hearts by kaeda (4805, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
A wonderfully tender fic in which Deirta catches up with Essek a few years after c2 and finds that her son is a man remade.
Reccer 1 says: Outsider POV my beloved! It turns a camera's eye onto the man Essek becomes through the Mighty Nein and gaining Caleb as a lover, and onto the love that the Nein have for him, shown through a soft lens. Reccer 2 says: A wonderful fic from Deirta's perspective of Essek's interactions with the M9 and all of the complicated family feelings that come along with it.
Tumblr media
This is one of our weekly communally-generated shadowgast rec lists. Every week we announce a new theme and allow anyone to submit a fic recommendation.
And hey, anyone includes you!
Next week, we'll be featuring xenobiology! This includes all sorts of unusual and non-human biology
Any fics coming to mind? Well, then use this form to submit!

New Organizers Intro and Questions
Hi All!
I thought I'd do an official communication of sorts. I'm @operafloozy - and I'll be taking over wildflowers for the next year. @mapleandgingeroatmeal and @anubisisms are going to be helping me out - Orbit is going to be helping with some of the communication and clarification, and Anubis is taking care of the graphic design and is another point of contact.
I love this event, and have participated in every year since the beginning. I'm not planning on changing anything major (it'll be an exchange, the 500 work threshold on AO3, the general cadence, ect). The timeline will be as follows:
April 25th - May 8th: Nominations Open May 9 - May 23: Signups Open May 26: Assignments go out July 7: Assignments Due July 14: Works are visible to the public July 21: Creators are revealed
Now - I do want some community input on some things that I'm thinking about - mostly on tumblr polls. But also - what has confused you about the fest when you first signed up? What questions did you have? Feel free to drop an ask in the wildflowers - I'm planning on looking through the FAQ and rules to see if I can clear anything up. Okay, first poll - I am not a member of the Haven Discord, but I know it's been used as sort of a home base in previous years. I don't want to be the year-round moderator of a discord, but I'm willing to spin one up for use during the exchange if it's useful for folks - for questions, cheerleading, sprints, a list of betas, ect. Would that be of interest?

Critmas Wishing Tree Fics
Okay, this is .... a full month late. January was busy, February was admittedly less busy but also soul crushing (and there was a convention in there), and it felt like there was always something more pressing when I sat down to the computer.
But no more!
Fics I wrote:
Sandstorm (1024,Mature) Pairing/Characters: Yasha Nydoorin, Earthbreaker Groon
In another world, Yasha fights Earthbreaker Groon
Fun fact: I had this one like 3/4 of the way done, but noticed that I had the chance to make this the 10,000th fic if I acted fast and got off my butt and got it done.
Last Night I Dreamed that You Were A Child (1116,Teen) Pairing/Characters: Imogen Temult & Relvin Temult Warnings: Major Character Death
After Predathos, Orym gives Relvin the news.
Schrodinger's Date (1347,Teen) Pairing/Characters: Ashton Greymoore/Marwa Endalia
Ashton finally gets around to asking Marwa on a date. Or do they?
Fun fact: I figured the best way to make Marquet have a little bit more Filipino influence was to give it a fantasy Jolibee knockoff.
Fics people wrote for me!
(I find it funny/kind of random that I did half of my prompts with my name attached, half anon, and most of my anon prompts were taken but none of my non-anon prompts were. I'm choosing not to read into that very much)
Dog Eat Dog by @gauzemer (3210,General) Pairing/Characters: Laudna & Imogen, Ashton & Laudna, Cassandra & Percy De Rolo, Cassandra & Laudna
Warnings:
After coming back from the dead for a second time, Laudna meets with one of the women who helped to kill her.
moral lessons for a fey boy by @justlikeswitchblades-blog (1864,General)
Pairing/Characters: Artagan & Jester Lavorre
Warnings:
Jester doesn't get to celebrate the holidays as openly as she would like in Nicodranas, so Artie shares the holiday traditions he's adopted instead. When he goes a step too far, he promises to make up for his mishap.
Old Friends and New by @astoriacolumnstaircase (4133,General) Pairing/Characters: Laudna & Bella
Laudna was having a ball. She had won the last five hands at Imogen’s guidance, and a stack of chips was beginning to obscure her even better than the shadows. It was delicious, playing the lady. It seemed that with a certain but undefinable measure of wealth, she could cross from being dangerously different and into delightfully eccentric. She schooled her hungry smile into a fox’s grin and bade the dealer to begin another game. She should have known it would attract the wrong sort of attention. Laudna and Bella catch up 20 some odd years later after a chance encounter at a casino in Kymal.
Anyway, i still need to read all of the 29 works, but you should definitely check the rest out! It's a great time, especially if you like Liam O'Brian characters. I'm definitely planning on running it again in another eight months.

I keep on being plagued with a specific thought on the consequences for the end of Campaign 3.
What will parents do when it's a real possibility that their child might be an evil deity?
I know, from living in the world we live in, that there are parents who think their children are irredeemable and evil now - and I know what kind of traits those children often have. And I know, historically, what people did to children they thought were changelings - and what traits they were thought to have. And - from the tal'dorei sourcebook - I know that there are places in Exandria that already practiced infanticide to get rid of ruidisborn children. This is horrifying, but also - I don't think I'm comfortable with any argument that this wouldn't happen (at least not at first). Because there's already so much erasure of parents who simply do not have their children's best interests at heart, and in some ways, a fictional denial still feels like a denial. I can only hope that some sort of organization can be propped up to intervene, somehow.

Oh god Silver saying that he's unburdened by what has come before. The idea that being separated from family, from history, from tradition, from heritage as a boon, that exposure to different people and different ways of life and points of view is corrupting. The amount of erasure and horror involved in that one turn of phrase, kindly said.
(And the way that's how empires and hegemony work - how America works. Residential Schools and and Ford's classes for workers and one of the horrors of chattel slavery being the separation of families and punishment for traditional beliefs)
Above his paygrade, he doesn't have to think about it.

Okay but also if Opal and Dorian go through with their baby killing plan. Like, they won't be the only ones - and how will they know for sure that they're killing the right god baby? I'm sure the followers of the Betrayers are going to get in on it and try to stop the primes before they can get powerful, too.
As if being a parent isn't hard enough.
I love thinking about the absolutely crazy parenting culture that's gonna develop on Exandria for the nearest generation, because if mortals get informed what happened to the gods, people are just gonna end up doing insane things, like babymaxxing to try and get a god baby, or naming their kids after gods hoping it helps, or just being reeeally suspicious of their babies anytime they do something slightly unusual. Lots of potential for fun non-god characters, like people who's parents were convinced they were a god and either put crazy expectations on them or disowned them, depending on their god preferences.

The Archheart was talking about running vs. staying and fighting Predathos. Nobody else wanted to run. (The Matron also didn't want to run, she seems like she wants to die, more than anything).
At no point did they say 'The gods will kill all of you to keep the secret of Predathos safe', and nobody in Bells Hells talked about it as if that was an option (which, considering how compelling of an argument it is - you'd think they'd have mentioned it), so it's kind of a stretch to think that's what they were talking about. You can believe it, but it's not well explained by the text.
But - even if that's what they meant. Well, the divine gate is still intact if Predathos is sealed. The Matron and the Archheart don't want to kill everyone, at least, and I'd think that would be a more difficult argument than fighting Predathos outright (I can't see Erathis going for it, considering her whole deal and her refusal to help with Aeor).
And if we've learned anything from Ludinus, it's that nobody needs to be a god to do untold amounts of damage. Asmodeus's whole thing is seduction into horrible decisions, and we've seen how effective it is. And how do you stop him? How are you even sure it's him? Even the gods couldn't tell. Seems like a great way to start a new Calamity.
Not to mention Vecna, wizards who want to become lesser idols, demons and devils trying to fill the power vacuum...
It seems like a pretty huge risk to not even interrogate.
I do think that people's opinions on the ethics of the gods as mortals plan vs. the gods behind the Divine Gate depends a lot on whether the focus on the gods' actions are prevention or punishment.
(I'm saying this while realizing that leaving the gods behind the divine gate and letting them sort it out amongst each other was impossible after BH let Predathos out)
What happened in Aeor specifically and the Calamity in general was horrible. And if you think the gods should pay for what they did, taking away their power or driving them out makes sense - it's punishment. But it does nothing to prevent future Calamities from happening, and in truth, letting Asmodeus out as a level 20 'mortal' who can come out of mortality at any time once Predathos is gone seems like it's going to cause more humanoid death. Not to mention power vacuums, Vecna, the gods getting Typhros, and other possible issues...
If you're thinking about it from a punishment perspective, it seems unjust that the prime deities got to choose their own consequences by going behind the Divine Gate. But the thing is - it was extremely effective from a prevention perspective! People still did things in the gods' names, but people are going to be horrible anyway. The gods didn't step on any ants for 800 years. Keeping Predathos sealed worked for literal ages longer (I've been envisioning it as 50-100k years but we don't know how long the earlier ages lasted)
So, is the focus more on keeping future people from being harmed, or is it on making sure that the gods pay for what they did?

I think the jump is to believe that the prime deities - who we know regretted what they did in Aeor - will immediately kill everyone on Exandria. They could have killed everyone on Exandria during the Solstice to stop the ritual. They could have killed Ludinus at any time. They chose to stay behind the Divine Gate and work through people who chose to follow them instead (to great risk to them all).
I realize there's a Doylist reason why - it'd kind of suck to have a literal deus ex machina. But, I don't know, their commitment to noninterference has to count for something, in my opinion.
Not to mention - do we think that the Archheart wants everyone dead? If he thought that the Primes would murder everyone if they didn't release Predathos at that point, wouldn't he mention it?
And if the issue is that the gods might kill everyone - I mean. They still can. Imogen is in a pretty fragile body, and can die at any point. The safest thing to do for them would be to seal Imogen away, pump her full of magic to make sure that she doesn't age or move or experience time, and then kill everyone else. Pretty monstrous, but if they're willing to commit a genocide anyway, why not commit a genocide minus one?
There's a tradeoff here: who do we trust more - the Prime Deities behind the Divine Gate at full power who have showed their commitment, over and over? Or the Betrayers on Exandria at extremely powerful but not godly (yet), who we know can and will want to hurt Exandrians?
They also, if they were worried about this - asked the gods for assurances before releasing Predathos. They had a phone a friend mask. But they chose not to.
I do think that people's opinions on the ethics of the gods as mortals plan vs. the gods behind the Divine Gate depends a lot on whether the focus on the gods' actions are prevention or punishment.
