Where is Critterstuck?

(Warning: I'm gonna talk about my feelings and mental health stuff so uh- beware.)

Okay uh- this is kind of an off the cuff post, I'm mostly making it for peace of mind? Like I'm gonna keep feeling guilty if I ignore things. (Making it sound so dramatic lmao)

So, on both my accounts I haven't posted anything Critterstuck or Homestuck related in ages, there's two main reasons:

-The hyperfixation kinda died down

-My Mental health plummeted like the Sburb meteor

I just kinda lost motivation to make Homestuck stuff after a while and didn't really want to make stuff about it or this au, couldn't really come up with drawings or writings for my own personal ocs or answering questions in the inbox.

As for my mental health? Woof...

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, the latter half of last year was probably one of the worst times in my entire life. I got out of a friendship with two people I once loved and now dread ever talking to again, one of said people was the one to get me into Homestuck itself. I spent the summer with verbally abusive family members, I got terribly sick during Christmas Eve, threw up on Christmas morning and spent the rest of December being so depressed I nearly 'factory reset' multiple times.

All this was while I was trying to write Critterstuck and a personal oc story. Fun.

All this culminated in me having a panic attack due to misinterpreting a friend's criticism of a character interpretation, resulting in me having a breakdown thinking they hated me. It was honestly so traumatic I'd been nervous to even engage with Homestuck again.

So yeah I kinda scared myself away from the HS fandom even though nobody asked for it. Big friggin oof.

I'll also admit to a bit of a sin I committed(/hj), I got into Homestuck and started writing Critterstuck and my personal story..before even finishing the whole comic. This was mostly because I'd already been spoiled aggressively hard for it and intimidation by it's sheer size, but it's not really an excuse- The fact I'm both a perfectionist and kinda lazy was a recipe for disaster when it came to worrying about not writing character one for one to their original forms.

So I was writing an au for a comic I had a surface level knowledge for, my mental health was to the Earth's core, my anxiety spooked me out of a series that was basically the only that brought me comfort for possibly the worst year of my life and the creative motivation just wasn't there.

All this wasn't to make you like- feel bad for me? I'm at the end of the day bringing up mental health in a post about Homestuck characters as funky animals, this was all just to give an actual reason for why everything's been painfully quiet. I felt guilt over leaving questions unanswered, making a discord only to freak out and barely speak in it.

I'm not cancelling the au either, I still have a lot of drafted ideas I still would like to cover (I feel like y'all deserve that much lol), it's more a case I don't know when I'll ever be able to do it again.

I feel bad leaving things hanging, but what can you do? I'd like to thank y'all for supporting this silly little au and generally being cool dudes, and I'm sorry for this ramble ^^;

Has anyone ever questioned some colors being consistent on all of the critters, like on the horns, Terezi's wings, etc.

...and the fact some got horns even if their animal counterparts DON'T (Eridan, Feferi, etc.)

I'll be honest with you OP, I've changed the designs of the critters several times. (E.G. Eridan pictured above)

The reason for the inconsistencies is as simple as when a design doesn't look complete enough in my eyes, I pick at it until my brain stops screaming at me. Every other inconsistency (horns, wings etc.) came from me going "huh..why didn't I do that before?", I've changed the critters designs so many times at this point I might just have to force myself to make final ones so I can stop nitpicking.

But if it's any consolation, the final designs all will have horns.

i love blue spider vriska. okok

i am SO sorry for the autism pedantics but while spiders do have 8 legs (and anywhere from 8-16 eyes depending on the genera) they ALSO have a pair of arm-like appendages called pedipalps that are useful in securing prey and moving around dirt/web/sticks/boluses (shrivelled up carcass they leave behind after liquefying the insides as external digestion then sucking them up with what is basically a wiggly straw connected to the stomach). so spiders actually have 8 legs PLUS a set of arms! SICK!

genuinely think this is really cool but im insane about spiders and their anatomy and mannerisms. i hope this doesnt come off shitty or like im trying to tell you what to do with ur own art. if u need species as a reference for vriska, for a non-tarantula, a jumping spider i would suggest phiddipus nikites (bright orange jumper with blue fangs). various tarantulas like ephebopus cyanognathus, chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, poecilotheria metallica, birupes simoroxigorum, chilobrachys natanicharum/dyscolus, cyriopagopus lividum, monocentropus balfouri, etc. all blue and all just SO cool! blue tends to be concentrated within theraphosiinae (tarantulas) because of the way their setae reflects in the light. its not actually a biological color, but simply light refractions. but some of these babys are BLUEEEE
