i feel like because shadowvanilla is largely a shadow milk-centric ship from the amount of content exploring the possibilities of his redemption, pure vanilla cookie's character is often dismissed/boiled down to just "compassionate" and "persistently supportive".
and that's not necessarily a bad thing, because pure vanilla DOES possess those traits. but sometimes, i feel like some people have pure vanilla exist in the shadowvanilla dynamic only to further shadow milk's growth. to elaborate, i mean like how "easily" pure vanilla forgives shadow milk's actions in the media. even posts revolving around an apology scene is about shadow milk's guilt, not about how pure vanilla feels about the torment.
(and this is not to criticize these posts! it's just an observation.)
but that just feels... idk, a bit unrealistic and two-dimensional.
just imagine being in pure vanilla's shoes: someone puts you through gut-wrenching trials, forcing you to watch your friends suffer and emotionally manipulates you into believing that everything is your fault. then, after realizing how miserable that person is, you offer your friendship to them, despite how horrible they made you feel!
i feel like we're GREATLY underestimating and ignoring how insane pure vanilla cookie is /hj. and i feel like that's also why codependent fics of them work so well.
because imagine a pure vanilla cookie who believes his self-worth is dependent on being needed. a pure vanilla who'll go to such extreme lengths to help that it ends up enabling shadow milk's self-destructive behavior, because pure vanilla cookie will never leave shadow milk's side despite the hurt he causes, and because shadow milk will always need him.
