Body language: Facing the wall to hide my face from you

* In "Soubise," Carmy listens while Syd talks to Gary about wine pairings. He's just puttering and he's not doing anything remotely wrong, but the way they shoot it, it looks a little like he's hiding out and bowing his head against the wall. This is just a passing moment but no doubt intentional by the producers. He's been Sydney!lurking for the entire course of the story, but here we see that he has become a little ashamed of it not least because he can't stop won't stop.

* In "Sophie," Nat spots Neil waiting outside her office, face against the wall. This is an action we've seen from him before. He did the same thing when they couldn't figure out the fire suppression system and Carmy checked in on him. "Are you hiding out there?"

* Last but not least, when Carmy comes looking for Sydney in "Goodbye," she's hiding her face against the wall, and after Richie comes out to interrupt, she instinctively returns to the same position, telling on Carmy to Dad while hiding her face from both of them.

The mirroring of a Fak behavior and a Sydney behavior is highly unusual, and I'm sure it's something we've not seen so explicitly before, which is part of what makes it so powerful.

The great and terrible Sydney Adamu, the original ballbreaker, has left the building. Something happened to her in the course of that phone call with Pete and in the hours of silent consideration afterward that has regressed her emotionally to almost bare bones. She has no defense mechanism that resolves this. She is primally distressed. This is pure lizard-brain fear and pain, no higher reasoning necessary, or even available.

She is afraid and there is nowhere safe for her in that building for her to feel that feeling. She's supposed to be helping with cleanup but the emotions are so unbearable that she flees the space he's in and makes do with burying her face against a wall. She thinks if she can just gather herself she'll be able to restore some sort of normal expression to her face and be able to power through the rest of the night.

But Carmy's been feeling her feelings all night and he knows something is terribly wrong, so he doesn't let her runaway and hide.

"I don't like the way this feels." "Yeah, well neither do I."

"Well, here we are."

By the way, the big three are all so so ridiculously good at their jobs. The way Ebon reads the line "hey! hey! what the fuck are you two shouting about?" is so so sophisticated because you know that Richie is trying to lighten the mood and convince himself this is just a funny little squabble, but he is at least as freaked out as the two of them.
