Hearing a groan from behind his newly acquired umbrella, Gus slowly lowered the item with wide eyes. Uh oh, he thought, processing the stranger's outfit as definitive cool guy duds.
"Oh no—I'm so sorry—" he cried out in shame, one hand leaving the umbrella handle to smack his face instead. "I didn't see you, I swear! I don't generally hit people in the face... Er, did it hurt? Please tell me I didn't break anything."
"Huh?" With his head cocked to the side, Gus glanced between the townhouse and the street behind him. It was a generous offer and he didn't think stranger danger warnings included people who gave him cool nicknames. "That's be awesome, actually! And my name's Gus, though umbrella kid works for me."
「𓆄」 Granted he had nowhere to really be, wherever Hawks was going: he'd almost always look to be in a rush. So, it was definitely his own undoing when he was out the door in a hurried manner, and an unfortunate press of what was effectively a hydraulic uplift motion of the umbrella staight to his chin.
The forced motion of having to move his chin up, caused the man to groan, fluttering back ever so slightly to give himself some distance as he reorientated himself.
At least Hawks was a pretty chill guy and took most everything in stride.
"Ah, damn? It's raining? Talk about a bummer." He didn't even acknowledge Gus at first. After a couple of blinks, he did eventually bring his attention down to the kid.
"Heeey, this rain storm should pass relatively soon, umbrella kid. Wanna wait it out inside with me? You look pretty soaked as is."

‘I believe the kids say, you ‘pogged’ it’
Do they say that? Uzi's so behind on teenage slang that she's still not sure what rizz means, and skibidi is just right out. But she has to match the energy, or else she'll be a laughingstock at school again- is there even a school in this place? She hasn't thought of that yet. If she's finally free from the shackles of- She's getting off track here, back to the slang.
"Chat, is... is that real?" she says, with only a smidge of uncertainty.
The other boy looks at her- judgmentally? Then he nods, and speaks again. "That's so ohio."
She's in. "Fanum tax."
"Gyatt."
"Real alpha."
"Chad W!"
"Very sus!"
"Sigma!"
Uzi stands proudly, having communicated in a way that is, presumably, completely intelligible to the other boy. There may not be any classrooms here, but she's achieved a passing grade in conversation, which is a very normal thing to think.
The other boy leans in; he's a little taller than her, but not by much, and Uzi has to crane her head back to meet him. "Alright, you gotta tell me... What does any of that mean?"
The only sound in the air is the gentle hum of Uzi's processor as it tries to light itself on fire. "I... I don't know! I thought you did!"
"No! But you were saying it all so confidently that I figured you must have! I thought you were one of those... what are they called, computers. A repository for human knowledge!" His eyes sparkle as he speaks. "I've got so many questions!"
"Bite me, not a computer! And they're all dead!" snaps Uzi. "At least, they are where I come from. All of them died. I'd never met a human before coming here. A live one, I mean."
The sparkles fade. "Oh. Really?"
"Yeah."
There's no sound in the air now. Uzi feels... not guilty, but maybe awkward? She should at least try to salvage things, but she only knows one or two things about humans. "Do you... know about anime? Humans invented it, I think."
"Yeah, Luz told me about that. Why?"
"I have a couple terabytes saved on my computer- Not me, like, my computer at home. If you want, I could show you-"
And the sparkles are back. "Really? From context I assume that's a lot! I'd love to!"
He's a little too close, and Uzi steps back. "I-I mean, it's no big deal, I just do a lot of pirating-"
"And you're a pirate? This is just getting better and better!"
"Uh, sure. We'll find something to watch; humans may have messed up a lot, but they did make some good anime." The energy is more upbeat now, and Uzi's glad she hasn't killed anything but vibes in this city. "Lucky for you, you have an expert to guide you. Now, how much time do you have? Have you ever heard of Naruto?"

switcheroo! :O
Augustus 'Gus' Porter
Craft Type: Paper (Creative Craft)
Gus Porter is a student in one of the many Houses of Change in Jouvente, which is a little strange because he's still a kid. But that doesn't change a House's willingness to teach someone if they want to learn. Perhaps this made him a little strange. This particular House focuses heavily in experimental Craft, resulting in him having a very different Crafting experience than the average person. Likewise, due to growing up associated with such a House from such an early age, Gus is a very skilled Crafter, using a variation of Creative Craft to create illusions. In this, he's particularly skilled and considered somewhat of a genius. However, his skill is limited by him being somewhat sheltered from the outside world. The result of him spending so much like in the House is an assumption that people have a lot more Craft knowledge than they actually do, assuming things are common sense when they are not.
Craft:
Copy Paste: Support (Paper) type. Creates a copy. On the next turn there is a 50% chance that the copy will take damage instead of Gus. Once the copy takes damage, it is destroyed.
Paper Jam: Paper type. Light paper damage to one enemy and significantly decrease their speed.
Bold Statement: Support type. Increases all allies attack for the next two turns.
#YESYESYES#okay you've convinced me to check out stars in time...#this is so cute anyway#FOR A RAINY DAY ☆▰▰━━┈┈┈

“Oof!” The boy grunted as he fell roughly to his side, both hands held aloft while his head briefly smacked against pavement. His breathing stuttered, then returned in a rush as he registered the pain more clearly. And while it was enough to bring tears to his eyes, his gaze instinctually landed on the palisman held safely in his palms. A shaky smiled graced his lips as he affirmed Emmeline’s wellbeing, though she was frantic in turn as she took in Gus’ injured state.
He moved to sit himself up, wincing and crying out at the dizzying sensation. “Ow, ow, ouch!” With his body still blocking a good portion of the ground, he set Emmiline on his torso and used his now free hands to cradle his head, still voicing his ache in murmurs. "Urgh, I think I'll just lay here for a bit..."
Unbeknownst to him, his wide-eyed chameleon scuttled around in search of someone to help. She stopped in the path of another child, jumping in place to get their attention.

Finding himself abandoned amidst a rainstorm, Gus stood frozen and at a loss for words. Sure, he recognized the city of Spirale and the area of Cotes-Fantasci where he used to live, but the familiar sights didn’t soothe the flinching of his extremities as he was pelted with a cold spray. In fact, it felt like hours until he was able to shock himself into movement and go running towards the townhouses further in the ward.
His legs gained a final burst of energy when he neared the first row of townhouses, kicking him quickly underneath a relatively dry awning. The first breath he took without pattering rain came in a gulp and he all but doubled over in fatigue. With hands on his knees, he looked up at the house number and grimaced to see it was one over from where he used to live. But with squinted eyes he noticed a lone umbrella at the entryway, a fortuitous find in this weather.
Grabbing the umbrella in hand, he struggled with wet hands to open it. With all the rustling of fabric and loud downpour beyond the awning, Gus didn’t hear the front door swing open, nor did he notice the blond who exited as the umbrella popped open at last.

I'm actually going to drop Gus here since I've been all but nonexistent (his cheerfulness is hard to get into lately too ;;;;)
hopefully I'll have the wherewithal to bring him back soon, but for now, I just wanna thank y'all for the wonderful times with him ♡ I was so worried about his muse, but the positive experience means I know I wanna bring him back sometime!

Sure, Gus had a lifetime of experience witnessing magic, but his months spent in the human world had skewed his perception over just how common it might be here. More impressive still, the girl's magic didn't require a spell, rather it seemed the tendrils instinctually followed her instructions.
Oh no—what if he'd insulted her by insinuating the shadowy limbs were abnormal?
"Oops—" He rushed to grab the tome at her prompting, a sheepish smile on his face as penance for gawking at his bibliothecarial saviour. A quick gasp at her offer, he replied, "Wait, really? That would be awesome!"
Tucking the book under one arm, he extended his free hand to her. "I'm Gus, by the way."
Is that a slight look of annoyance? It's gone as quickly as it came, but now that the book is lowered and...WELL it would have been handed TO him, but the other seems amazed by her magic.
"Everyone here has magic. Please grab your book. I'm getting tired." The tendrils wave lightly to entice the boy to take the book quicker.
Hm....
"You wish to learn about the creatures and plants of this world? A book isn't going to do you justice. I can show you around."

His steps came to a halt after a strong grip came down upon his shoulders, both steadying him and reassuring the hands’ owner that this moment was no illusion. Gus couldn’t help but grin up at his friend—a boy who had become so much like a brother to the once lonely only child—meanwhile his eyes dripped tears down his cheeks. This was a welcome shock to his system, even as he let out a watery laugh upon hearing Hunter’s few but loaded words of recognition.
He hardly registered his own movements as his arms flung out around the blond’s torso and squeezed him tight. Shoving his face against his friend’s shirt left his face out of view, though the slight hitch to his breathing surely signalled his barely restrained cries.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m here.” he replied with a softer tone now that his initial excitement had simmered into comfort, especially since his face was smushed against fabric that held a familiar scent that spoke of family. He sniffled as he tried to speak, his words seeming to fail him now that he knew this wasn’t a trick he had to talk his way out of.
“I missed you so much.” he all but whined out with his eyes squeezed shut. With the belated realization that he was spreading snot all over Hunter’s shirt, Gus pulled back a bit, but still not far enough to leave the hug. “I was so scared! One second we were all together and then this! I didn’t know where I was or who I could trust…”
His lips quivered as he asked, his voice no louder than a whisper, “Where have you been?”
THE WAVES SLOSHED LAZILY AGAINST THE SHORE, tousling the sand and dredging up the things living beneath, then receding back into the ocean. he just likes listening to it sometimes. it calms him down, drowns his thoughts in the sound; if only they would stay down there, buried beneath the tide--- but the sea will churn them back up eventually. with recent events still heavy on his mind of late, hunter sought solace wherever he can. seated at the edge of the marina, he finds it there, with flapjack nestled into the crook of his neck.
the wind is a little colder today, but that doesn't bother him. hugging his knees to his chest, he closes his eyes, relishing only in the swells crashing ashore, lapping at the foundations of the marina. it doesn't take long for every memory to flash by in that darkness beneath his eyelids; belos' mindscape, the collector, willow, gus...
---willow. gus.
i can't do this without you guys.
opening his eyes, he shares a glance with his palisman, who answers with a comforting chirp, to which hunter cracks a weak smile. sighing, but never quite ridding himself of that weight, he stands all the same. maybe being alone isn't the best thing for him after all.
" let's go home, flapjack. " and he angles towards the shore...
... only to notice someone approaching him, quickly. quirking a brow, he waits for them to draw closer before---
" ... gus? " his chest tightens, turning towards him.
the moment he's within arm's length, hunter reaches for him, desperately seeking something real in this moment. when his hands find gus' shoulders, he holds them tight, scared to let go. searching the boy's expression, he can hear nothing else but the sound of his own heartbeat, pounding at his skull. his voice shakes, and tears prick at his eyes upon the realisation; this is real, because he can't bear another lie.
" you're... you're really here. "

Gus arrived at the mall with the intention of buying some warm clothes, but soon found himself drawn to the scavenger hunt taking place. His attention was fully focused on one snowflake, spending the next five minutes trailing after in hopes it would pause somewhere.
As soon as the snowflake seemed to tire of floating aimlessly and came to rest on a directory of the mall, Gus leapt at it with his hands outstretched ready to cup it. Unfortunately, it seemed the same crystalline flake caught the attention of another hunter, as evidenced by Gus' head knocking into the other boy's noggin.
"Ouch!" he immediately cried out and placed a hand to his forehead, a bump already forming there.

With the offer growing increasingly in temptation, he had a difficult time saying no. While it could be a trap, he wondered how nefarious the Collector could be, considering the entity was even more naive than Gus was years ago.
Pursing his lips before he ended up drawing blood with his teeth, his brows scrunched together as he finally nodded at the man. He grabbed one of the yellow candies, assuming it to be lemon, and smiled up at the stranger.
"Thank you then. I'm Augustus by the way–my friends call me Gus though." he replied with a tilt of his head. His gaze remained on the man while he unwrapped the candy, though he gaped just as he was tossing the candy into his mouth.
"Ere's uht?!" Eyes wide in equal measure shock and excitement, he struggled with pronunciation until making the decision to swallow the candy whole. "Hold onto that mystery for now–you know Luz?! Where is she? Is she okay?"
break recognizes tension when he sees it, but he doesn't think less of the boy for it. for all he knows, he's in a strange place, being approached by a strange person, offering him strange food. and depending on where he's from, he might assume worse. still, there's amusement in the polite greeting and refusal.
a child with manners. first time for everything.
' well, i promise i won't slap your hand. however, it's not often that i offer my candy to others, so i advise you to take advantage of the opportunity before it closes. i, myself, quite like lemon. or the red ones— they're strawberry. '
he keeps the box open, but grabs a candy for himself, chewing down on it thoughtfully. his smile grows more amused, still, at the mention of a human. singular, huh?
' little man, you'll find lots of humans around. as well as plenty of other beings. vampires, or ghosts, or wizards... more than i can count. i'm a human, if that's of any help. i heard you calling for a ... luz, is that correct? i believe i'm familiar with the name. '
