Anthony Bourdainâs Parts Unknown Concludes with LES Finale Nov. 11
The abbreviated final season of Anthony Bourdainâs Parts Unknown is underway. Indeed, nearly over. But youâll need to wait another few weeks for the Lower East Side/East Village treatment.
The highly-anticipated episode is the finale, airing November 11 on CNN. (It actually premieres at the Food Film Festival in New York on October 24.)
Itâs the last episode in a twelve-season series, cut short due to Bourdainâs suicide in France five months ago. The personal journey tracks through the neighborhood and some of its luminaries over the years, including Richard Hell, Deborah Harry and Chris Stein, Lydia Lunch, Fab 5 Freddy, Danny Fields, Amos Poe, Jim Jarmusch, Kembra Pfahler, John Lurie, and photographer Clayton Patterson.
Meetups went down at neighborhood stalwarts like Rayâs Candy Store, Emilioâs Ballato, Johnâs of 12th Street, Max Fish, and B&H Dairy. Newcomers like Kings County Imperial, Saxon+Parole, Doughnut Plant, and Big Gay Ice Cream also cameo.

New Report Ranks Milwaukee #72 Out of 100 Cities in Affordable Housing
By Nyesha Stone
According to the RealtyHop Housing Affordability Index, when it comes to being able to afford a house, Milwaukee ranks 72 out of 100 cities in the U.S.âlast monthâs report ranked Milwaukee at 76. Every month, RealtyHop analyze their data alongside comprehensive U.S. Census data to find out if homeownership is affordable or accessible for the average family, according to their site.
Los Angeles is at the top of the list of least affordable homes with a 1.44 percent increase in homeownership burden, according to the index. L.A.âs median price range for a home is $899,000, which means the average L.A. household would have to spend 91.4 percent of their yearly income to own a home.
Only about six hours away, Detroit is the most affordable city to own a home, according to the index. The index reported that a household in the city would only need to spend $302 a month to own a home, or 13 percent of their annual income.
Along with that data is the medium income of the 100 cities. Milwaukeeâs median income is $38, 289.
And, Detroitâs medium income is significantly lower than that at $27,838.
According to the âAmerican Dreamâ every American should have the opportunity to own their home.
With these statistics, do you think thatâs a possibility.
Before you make that decision, look over the full report at https://www.realtyhop.com/blog/realtyhop-housing-affordability-index-july-2019/.

Rooted in 38126: ESports and video gaming breaks ground in âSoulsvilleâ

BraveDog co-founders Isiah Reese (right) and Dustin Mack have a positive vision of whatâs ahead for the BraveDog Innovation Center in Soulsville. (Photo: Dr. Sybil C. Mitchell)
Itâs a video gamerâs dream come true: a state-of-the-art video game lounge, complete with an eSports arena, eSports Academy, a student video game development training center, entrepreneurial training center, retail store, workspace and financial literacy center.
And itâs coming to Memphis, specifically Soulsville U.S.A., located in ZIP code 38126 and known as one of the nationâs poorest areas. A symbolic groundbreaking spectacle this past Saturday (announced that the LeMoyne-Owen College Community Development Corporation (LOC CDC) would build a franchised BraveDog Video Gaming Innovation Center (BDIC).
Residents, community supporters and elected officials converged on the site and cheered the highly anticipated project that will be housed across the street from the historic Four Way Grill at the corner of Mississippi Blvd. and Walker Ave.
âAlthough this is the poorest ZIP code in the state, it has endured because of the energy, the fight and goodwill of its people,â said Jeffrey Higgs, the project manager and executive director.
âThey ran Ida B. Wells off this same corner. Isaac Hayes and Maurice White and Al Green used to hang out over at the Stax Recording Studio. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ate at the Four Way Grill and our beloved college, LeMoyne-Owen College, is a 156-year-old institution. There is a lot of history here,â Higgs said.
âThis project is about technology, change and our young people. They must always know we care about them and we care about their future.â
BraveDog Games CEO Dustin Mack, 28, co-founded the company with Isiah Reese.
âWe as a company are ecstatic about this partnership, and we applaud executive director Higgs and LOC CDC for the amazing work they do in the community,â said Mack. âWe envision LOC CDC and Greater Memphis becoming a catalyst for innovation within the video games and eSports industries. As a company, we are all fully committed to this initiative.â
The BDIC will be housed in nearly 2,000 square feet and is projected to have an estimated $15 million economic impact in South Memphis and the downtown areas.
âThis is fantasy turning into reality,â said Mack. âWe appreciate those individuals and corporate citizens who have already reached out to support this project financially. We invite others to join as well. Help us to save our young people.â
âI was a South Carolina kid who only had a single parent,â said Reese. âWhat food we did have, Mother would divide it between my sister and I while she would drink water. People ask, âWhy do you grind so hard?â I just tell them that I work so hard because I can still hear my motherâs stomach growling through the night.
âLeMoyne-Owen and this community means something special to us. LOC gave me my first job as an adjunct professor. I will never forget it.â
Reese cited youngsters as the reason why the games lounge is so significant.
âWe canât take them to Silicon Valley, so Silicon Valley will come to them.â
LOC CDC president Michael Minor praised the âspirit of cooperation and pure joyâ from young people at the school who were on hand to cheer the plans for a gaming lounge.
âThis facility will bring others into the community who donât look like us,â said Minor.
There are just no losers here. The excitement of our young people means so much. This will be our own community place where we can gather and just fellowship with one another.
âOne of BraveDogâs most important next steps is to bring together storytellers from racially diverse backgrounds to develop high quality video games that accurately and authentically reflect this community.â
Mack admitted that the concept of earning six figures seems unrealistic for children and teens that live on SNAP benefits and welfare.
âOne of the most important ways to change the mindset of those who live in poverty is to help them see a way out of poverty and give them the tools necessary to build a better economic future,â Mack said.
âWe will help facilitate these possibilities by working to get community residents on the payroll of large tech corporations as well as assist local entrepreneurs become prosperous business owners.â

Babymooning in Greece
Is "babymoon" a real word now? It sounds ridiculous, yet it's perfect shorthand for what we're doing, enjoying the Greek isles a few months before our first baby is due.
We fly nonstop to Athens (direct flights being one of the small benefits of living in NYC), but this concrete metropolis isn't of primary interest this time. We manage to make an obligatory, and sweaty, visit to the Acropolis.
A ferry whisks us to the island of Naxos, known for being lush, large, and low-key. An ancient gate to an absent temple stands over the port.
I feel mildly ashamed trying to rent a car with an automatic transmission in Europe, as if I'm asking for a bike with training wheels. For the record, I once learned to drive a stick in high school, thanks to Mike Shen and his Chevy Cavalier, but never had the chance again. It didn't seem wise to relearn that skill on narrow, foreign streets. The third agency we ask has an automatic available, and we end up with this tiny, asthmatic Fiat.
We drive inland, passing small Byzantine churches (like above), until we reach the little marble village of Apiranthos. A charming traditional taverna, called Lefteris, is overseen by a scruffy chain-smoking man who resembles the lupine brother of Javier Bardem.
Greeks consume more olive oil than anyone, it is said. We are swallowing our share, with well-lubricated Greek salads at almost every meal.
The only place we try twice, though, is the confusingly-named Waffle House, which does not offer Southern-style pork chops but does serve fresh waffles, with ice cream on top.
Back in the port of Naxos town, we are enchanted by the sun setting behind the ancient gate and a rocky jetty aiming, arrowlike, at the Aegean sea.

A Fringe Mini Set

You ready for a FUN post today??? It just makes me happy lol and I need to share it with you guys!!

Endless Rose: Fringe Crop Top / Endless Rose: Fringe Mini Skirt /Â Sachin & Babi: Plastic Flower Earrings / Hermes: Oasis Slides / BaubleBar: Mini Monogram Necklace / Island to East Side: Monogram Beaded Bag c/o / Amazon: Heart Sunglasses (I made mine with the pearls but you can buy similar ones here)
I'm totally aware that this look may only appeal to a small number of people reading this but man do I love it. I so wish I had this set for my bachelorette! It's like the perfect bachelorette set!! It's currently hanging in my closet asking to be worn again but I have yet to find an occasion to wear it. I feel like I need to throw a second party at night with our friends and make a full thing of it lol.
Every time I put it on I seem to dance and shake in it lol it becomes a full thing. I have no less than 5 videos of me doing just that, that I'll need to upload for you guys to see. But it's killing me that I can't think of a normal place or time to wear this (lol duh). So please leave more recommendations on where I can wear this!! Engagement party, shower, bachelorette -- I'm all done with those!!
I'm wearing a size M for both but could fit into the small top without any issue because the back has a smocked area where there is no fringe so it's stretchy and moveable. As far as two-pieces go, I'm a real big hit or miss kind of person. This one is a total hit! It's surprisingly very flattering on and the fringe helps make it all very forgiving.Â
On a side note, I've been wearing these earrings NON STOP and I love them. I'm this close to actually buying them too. I'm currently renting them from RTR and unsure if I should just rent them for the whole summer or just buy them and be done with it. What are your thoughts??

End of Summer in Italy
Now that we are truly at the start of fall here in NYC, I thought Iâd go back a month or two to our end of summer trip to Italy. Emily and I were desperate for a Europe vacay, and decided that we would book a last minute trip to the beautiful Amalfi Coast in Italy.
Italy is one of those places I can visit a 100 times and never not be surprised at how beautiful it truly is⊠Ok Iâve actually only been there 3 times, but Iâm still not sick of it!
Our first stop on our Amalfi adventure was Sorrento, where neither of us had been before. While we were in Sorrento we stayed at the Grand Hotel Cucomella which is part of the Small Luxury Hotels, which we absolutely loved. Â Their aesthetic is clean and simple just the way I like it. The views impeccable throughout the hotel, and our room was quite spacious. We even had our own balcony with sea views!
We ate a ton at the hotel, their pasta was some of the best weâve ever eaten. Everything cooked at the hotel is freshly made from the fruits and veggies they plant and grow themselves in their garden. This is great if you want to travel and still eat clean. Hotel Cucomella has beautiful anemities you donât even want to leave the hotel because everything you can think of is there (in fact, we only left the hotel to go out for dinner!).
Each day we just lay by the pool, or on their salon overlooking the sea. It was so peaceful because it is a private space. The pool is massive and kept perfectly clean throughout the day.
I had the best few days here at the Grand Hotel Cucomella. Until next time Italia! xo

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS, Long Island City
Though some of my gigs havenât ended the way I wouldâve liked, Iâm pretty proud of where Iâve been over the years. My longest term was two stints totaling 12 years at Publishers Clearing House, the direct mail business that runs the sweepstakes. I have also put in 4 years at the Worldâs Biggest Store, Macyâs; the cityâs largest typographic business, Photo-Lettering, when type houses were a thing; Tiffany & Co.; and Pearson, one of the countryâs biggest publishers of schoolbooks. I consider myself a good copy editor and proofreader, and my writing ability is evident from writing this website for 20 years as well as publishing two books, Forgotten New York (HarperCollins, 2006) and also, with the Greater Astoria Historical Society, Forgotten Queens (Arcadia, 2013). I am available if needed for such work: contact me at [email protected].
This huge building stretching along 37-18 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City is home to Standard Motor Products. SMP was founded in 1919 by Elias Fife and Ralph Van Allen, producing electric parts for the auto industry, then poised to become a major player in the 20th Century. The firm moved to Queens as early as 1921 and bought its present-day behemoth in 1936. SMP has sold the building since, but remains a tenant.Â
I filled in here for just two weeks after my first layoff from Publishers Clearing House in November 1999, but Iâm happy to have been involved with such a longstanding institution. Many of the interiors had seemingly been left unchanged in decades, and I especially liked the bathrooms. Why? I could look out the windows onto the Sunnyside RR yards, which are just behind the building. The city and real estate developers consider the yards a waste of real estate, and are looking to deck them over and build condo towers on them.Â
For the last decade, 37-18 Northern Boulevard has had an added function:Â commercial farming at the Brooklyn Grange.
Please help contribute to a new Forgotten NY website
Check out the ForgottenBook, take a look at the gift shop, and as always, âcommentâŠas you see fit.â
