Context matters. Try starting that passage in the middle. Tell me what word you would focus on. Jesus challenges them by contrast... "I did one miracle" To me that's funny, how many have they done? 1. Know my role. 2. Know the rules. 3. Check my motive. 4. Repeat 1-3 To judge rightly I better ask whose will is being done. Not picking on anyone, but this is the third encounter with water since the Israelites left Egypt. Would I be upset, probably. Grumbling, probably. They haven't spent enough time with the Lord yet. The book of Jonah isn't meant to be a good story or S/S lesson. It's a testimony. God relays exactly what is needed in Scripture. Our patience is required as well as our understanding. We have a need we may think we don't. For those who look at Lent as a season of change or transformation, prayerfully consider the source of your effort. "Who knows" says the king. God knows. Paul, the person who once hunted Christians even to death, attests to this with a sincere salutation to open the letter to the Romans. How much do you think we matter to Jesus? After He told them He was leaving, what made Him think He should pray before leaving the table? What do you mean, Again?? Why would Jesus allow that? Because at this point the devil is down 2-0. His previous record is undefeated, and the last of his best methods, the pride of life, is about to fail. Jesus allows the opportunity to shut it down so that Satan knows his run is over. The ability to refuse now belongs to us, in and through Jesus. Encountering an opportunity is different that creating one. Paradise in the Wilderness... Does this passage sound harsh? After all, it was their first offense, they were new on the block & didn't realize all the pitfalls. However, the blessing is that sin would not be able to remain attached and they still be able to enjoy the fruit of God's presence. So, we know the reason for our condition with God.
