Dragon egg headcanon

I headcanon that dragon eggs are technically, for all practical purposes, immortal. They can be broken and damaged, of course. But as long as the shell isn’t broken, they can stay viable forever, the hatchling still alive inside just waiting to be incubated.

Usually, dragon parents incubate their eggs right away, so they hatch at what’s seen as the “normal” time. Sometimes, however, something happens; the egg is lost or stolen, the family dies, the clan disappears… but as long as the shell isn’t broken, the egg will be fine. And sometimes, eggs can wait for months… years… centuries to be found and hatched. And the hatchling is born, as healthy as if the egg had been laid six days ago, but of course their parents and original clan have been long forgotten.

This is why, knowing how long eggs can last without incubation, there’s rarely an attempt to find a “first generation” dragon’s parents; it’s very possible that even their bones have become dust, there’s nothing left.

Unhatched eggs are literally little time capsules.

Theory: the Tidelord isn’t missing, he’s checking up on his OTHER domain.

Evidence:

This is the description for an item obtainable by digging in Fire, but technically not in Water.

The Blacksand Annex is located at Southwest of the Ashfall Waste, flowing lava out into the open waters.

I know the Overworld map art isn’t exactly coherent right now, but from what can be seen, there isn’t any connection between the very contained fresh waters of the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the Annex.

Conclusion: either the description for the Igneous Flow is innacurate (boring answer), or the Open Waters are also Tidelord’s domain. And given that a new volcano-island-thing has erupted in the sea amidst the Por-letariate Revolution in Temper, Temper, it’s plausible that He might have gone out to see what the heck is happening in his summer house.

Anyway, I just wanted to get this out there before it gets inevitably debunked when the new map is implemented.

Some ideas snatched from @pyrouge-fr involving the skinning and tanning of dragon hides as a funerary practice. Imagine with me if you will:

The swords of long gone warriors wrapped in the oiled hides of their wielders

The furs of an elder draped over their grave, mane carefully and lovingly braided by a loved one

Colorful scales decorating the walls of a memorial, perfectly preserved and going back generations

The tattered feathers of pirates flying over ports and navy vessels as a warning to others of what justice awaits raiders and thieves

A vengeful fighter marching to battle in the mane of the friend they could not save
