He had been watching them from a distance - that strange familiar and their companion, the entelechy. He had thought his position hidden enough, but he should had not considered Venat's skillset when choosing his vantage point. The sound of her voice caused his gaze to snap to her, souring the peace he had enjoyed till now. "Venat," he greeted, quickly turning his back on the strange pair below. "Should you not be looking after your charge? You have claimed responsibility for them, no?"

Yes, Hythlodaeus did have something to say. But what he had to say was quite awkward, and though the man had been known to make mischief every now and then, it was not often for people of Elidibus's standing (Emet-Selch notwithstanding, of course). He was an old friend, and while Hythlodaeus had nothing but respect for their young emissary, they were not yet close enough to be considered friends just yet.

While trying to figure out how, exactly, he would go about telling the Emissary that a beetle had made itself at home in the hood of his robe, the problem resolved itself. A white, serpentine head darted out from his hood, and with a snap of its jaws, the insect was gone.

"I, er... It's nothing," Hythlodaeus said hastily, deciding that there was no point in telling him now. "I merely wanted to compliment your lovely familiar. I caught sight of it just now - a snake, was it?"

He did not bother to turn his gaze from the skies as the strange, leporine man settled in the grass beside him. The skies here were exceptionally clear, and it had been quite some time since he had such an unimpeded view of the heavens above. Stars glittered across the great expanse, glittering like dust trailing through the great dark.

"The night is too beautiful to remain abed." Hythlodaeus gave a low groan as he stretched languorously in the soft grass, sprawling his arms out above his head. "I simply could not resist taking it in."

i love it when characters are codependent. i love it when losing someone feels like losing a limb. i love it when two people "complete" each other so wholly and terribly that one can barely function without the other. i love it when the fear of losing the only person who understands them is so all-consuming they'll destroy anything to stay together, including themselves.

She looked up at the sound of his approach, marked only by the crunch of his shoes in the gravel. The Annex's gardens were a favorite haunt of hers when sleep refused to come, but she hasn't yet had company in them this late at night.

"Afraid not," she said, bending to scoop up a smooth-worn stone and send it sailing across the water of the pond, skidding a couple times before it sank to the bottom. "Too much on my mind, I guess."

Her master had always been much the same way, and had instilled the same values into the young miqo'te during her time under her care. But that was before she had ventured out into the world on her own, before she had made dependable allies whom she would eventually learn to call friends.

The tap of her spoon against the rim of her teacup summoned an enchanted bone china teapot to serve them both. "Still, though I know little of your origins, I would be remiss to turn away someone who, doubtless, holds the wisdom of ages past. So tell me - to what do I owe the pleasure?"

Erenville did not look up from his work, sitting cross-legged in the earth. A collection of seven ducklings cheeped nervously between his long, leporine legs, looking anxiously for their parents. The adult ducks hovered anxiously nearby as he worked on an eighth duckling, deft fingers weaving together a splint for its broken leg.

"Not heartless," Erenville remarked, tying the last of the braces in place to force the leg straight. "Merely impartial. Yet I still try my utmost to lend aid wherever I can." Something they might have in common, should either care to look.

Fingers tracing over the last few words, her gaze shifted, taking in the familiar hue of his aether among the myriad other signatures in the room.

Her head tilted to the side, expression unchanged as she remarked drily, "I am sure I speak for all present when I say that if you wish to empty your pretty little head of all thoughts, you are more than welcome to. Blood and gristle are so very hard to clean off parchment, after all."
