Honestly the internet has been such an unambiguous and incredibly dramatic positive influence on my personal life that even understanding some of the real issues (e.g. genocide in Myanmar) the idea that anyone could tally up the profits and losses and not consider it a massive win for humanity remains very strange to me.

Like this isn't an carefully considered position, to be clear. But it is a deeply felt one.

Actually depressing how many people on this website are totally on board with broad censorship and unpersoning so long as it’s against people you personally don’t like. Or if it’s against “dangerous” speech and “sex offenders.”

Did you know that in most states, getting caught urinating in public is a registerable sex offense? And that most of the people on registries didn’t actually commit any crime involving another person? That they disproportionately target and disenfranchise men of color?

I'm so sick of defending shit I don't even like. I hate porn. I think gender and sexuality are boring. I've never taken an illegal drug and have no interest in doing so. One of the meaner ways to interpret the current rise of the right in the West is as a revenge of provincialism. Really, "revenge" might already be giving them too much credit, the provinces weren't really harmed, they were at most humiliated, and now they are making it everyone else's problem. They were dragged into the 21st century against their will and now they are violently reasserting their backwardness. Their enemy is everything that is good about modernity: Personal freedoms and pluralism, relative peacefulness, openmindedness, education, soft borders, positive sum trade relations, ... They still want the shiny toys modernity affords them, but it has to be on their own illiberal terms. The actual problems of modernity, like inequality and environmental degradation, are deputised as weapons to humiliate their opponents.

Anyway, I said this is mean, probably it's unhelpful because it fills you with contempt and makes you unable to still take the other side's problems seriously. Also it is just awfully flattering to my side, which should always ring alarm bells. And it doesn't exactly lend itself to productive strategies forward. I'm probably just bitter. But man, it is hard to shake once it locks into place.
