a week since we spoke , a week since i screamed at her and told her topper was no good for her and i was right , god it was like the man sucked all the joy out of her , she was empty now she didn’t even want to go surfing? my amy? the one who would kill to just even touch the ocean now refused to go anywhere with me unless topper was around so i needed to speak to her , i couldnt stand this tension between us , i just my best friend.

i heard from kiara that topper had invited amy to go to midsummers , i assumed she wouldn’t . i mean it’s a kook event , amy hated them she thought they were over the top and ridiculous so why would she go? atleast that’s what i thought till i saw her picking out this beautiful yellow dress with kie , and topper was the one that got to see her in it? got to hold her hand whilst i had to watch.

i couldn’t help , i had to go talk to so later that evening after seeing her get the dress with kie i went to her house , i knew her mum wasn’t around , she rarely ever was so i just knocked on the door . I stood and waited , just watching the door till it opened .

“pope? what- you okay?” she asked the moment she saw me , like we hadn’t just been ignoring each other for a week

“no i- are you going to midsummers with him?”

“with who? topper?”

“obviously with topper.”

“yeah i’m going to midsummers with him , he asked me to and i just- it seems like fun” she smiled as spoke it wasn’t the amy smile it was the smiled she used when she was doing something for someone else and acting like it made her happy to

“don’t fucking lie to me , god i’m your bestfriend i know when you lie and you hate midsummers , i know that”

“well people can change their opinions , pope”

“oh trust me i know people can change but amy this isn’t like you , toppers changing you and i hate it”

she went silent , like she knew i was right but didn’t want to admit it . we both knew she only was with topper because she wanted that kook life , wanted the friends and nice outfits but it wasn’t actually her.

“does he knows?”

“know what?

“about us , amy . does topper know about us?”

“well he knows who you are and he knows we’ve always been friends but they isn’t really anything else to know”

“freinds? that’s all we wer- are?” i corrected myself because i knew we weren’t , we never were.

she couldn’t look at me , her eyes kept drifting away and all she could was nod .

i couldn’t take it so i walked away , not able to stomach looking at the girl i was madly in love with pretend to be in love with someone else.

that next night dad dragged me to go work at midsummers and my stomach felt ill , my chest physically hurt due to the fact i knew i was gonna see her , smiling and laughing with him.

as i stood there by the grill , i couldn’t take my eyes off her , the way she looked so perfectly and they way he just stood there beside her like a ogre , what a piece of shit .

as i stood there with my eyes stuck in place to her , unable to move i felt someone come up to me , turning to see kiara

“you’re so obvious”

“what?”

“you haven’t taken your eyes off amy all night”

“that’s not true”

“just say to her , tell her how you feel”

“i don’t feel anything for her , she wants topper that’s clear”

“i think she likes you to , i mean i know she likes you”

i looked at her , my face full of confusion , like she had just spoken in her own language that i couldn’t understand

“she told me , you know she doesn’t want topper like that. pope she’s been inlove with since we were kids”

“oh.” i went silent , the noise of kiara’s words ringing in my ears as my eyes subconsciously drifted back to amy , this time it wasn’t jealously or hatred it was the real sadness of not being able to be with her.

as the night carted on and i watched them dance and laugh and amy try and blend in with her so called “kook friends” i needed to get her , needed to take her away.

i walked up to her when she was getting a drink , gently taking her hand and dragging her away

“pop- pope what are you doing”

i didn’t answer , to focused on getting her away .

“pope let go!”

i dropped her wrist once no one could hear us , once we were far away

“amy i cant- you’re hurting me and i know it’s not you’re fault , we didn’t break up you don’t owe me anything but my chest physically hurts seeing you with him , seeing him be all over him and acting like that’s love when we know it’s not , when we both know it’s us , it always has been”

“pope you need to stop this-“

“no. don’t- don’t do that , don’t act like i’m the only one feeling this because for the past few months i’ve bit back every word , i’ve let myself believe you don’t want and that you really do love him but any i can’t anymore , i know you-“

“shut up” she cut him off , grabbing his face gently and kissing him , not lustful but full of the love she had felt for him for so long , the love that she could never give to topper .

she pulled back , smiling slightly as i tried to catch my breath

she looked back at topper and his friends , that whole other world that she didn’t fit into .

she looked back at me , grabbing my hand and running with me , pulling up the bottom of her dress and we smiled all the way to the beach .
