Masterworks in World Literature emphasizes the study and consideration of the literary, cultural, and human significance of selected great works of the Western and non-Western literary traditions. An important goal of the class is to promote an understanding of the works in their cultural/historical contexts and of the enduring human values which unite the different literary traditions.
In world literature, two things that you will cherish in your life is to embrace yourself with limitations and learn to care, accept and experience God's divine love. We have discussed the literary devices, elements of the story and figures of speech. It was already tackled in our Senior High school, but it helps us to retain the knowledge we have and use it for future educational purposes.
Gilgamesh was a historical king of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk who wished to become immortal, a major hero on ancient Mesopotamian mythology, and the protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh, an epic poem written in Akkadian during the late second millennium BC. He endowed with superhuman strength, courage, and power.
Gilgamesh was driven and committed to pursuing what he wants in his life, he was able to experience a long journey fighting with some mystical creatures and encounter some Goddess like Siduri but still, he managed to kill them and ask for help. Although All his hardships and sacrifices to achieve immortality were just a waste of time because in the end, we were not able to acquire the power he wanted and he died.
We did a chain sequence of chapters 1 and 4 which we learn about the primary characters that are involved in the epic and also, we have to learn how Gilgamesh really strives in order to achieve his goal and that is immortality.
Immortality is the quality or state of someone or something that will never die or be forgotten. I learned that immortality was not just about being physically alive in this world but also, the things you have done and achieve in this world would make a big difference and many people would recognize the bravery and skills of Gilgamesh therefore, his contribution will still live on to the memory of his people. I also learn about life and death as Utnapishtim said that "There is no permanence. From the days of old there is no permanence. Life and death, they allot but the day of death they do not disclose.”
Rubaiyat is a traditional Persian verse form consisting of a collection of quatrains, typically rhyming aaba.
The Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam is a poem of high divine and spiritual meaning. The beauty and simplicity of this poem are so immaculate that people of all faiths and those who have no faith at all can seek divine solace in it. Omar has used popular metaphors in his passionate praise of wine and love.
We also did an activity in which we rephrase the 3 verse or chapter that has assigned to us and that is verses 7, 8 and 12. It was my task to learn and understand more about how Omar Khayyam explains himself with relations in Sufism.
Sufism is a mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through the direct personal experience of God.
As I was able to research it, I get to learn more about the symbolism and metaphors that he did that would actually give a sense of meaning about life and divine love.
In verse 7, I was able to reflect on the Fire which Omar Khayyam was talking about. I know that sometimes we experience winter or days that we are being cold and sad, full of loneliness and regrets in life but when spring came, we have attained rebirth and our heart started to burn again, ready to fight and live again. A gloomy day turns into a bright full of joy and fun. As Utnapishtim said that there is no such permanence in this world, in short, time is running therefore, we must live our life to the fullest.

VENICE🇮🇹 by:Jainne Flores If you feel that your life is a mess, Then you should dress up And find a way to cheer yourself up. Go somewhere that can gives you satisfaction A place that has a perfection That wherever you go, you'll see the best attraction. We've been in a place where we felt alright A place where it is just right And a place that has a unique ambiance. It is called Venice That will surely gives you an Italy experience With this, you will always wish to go back. Venice Mall is located in the 50-hectare Venice Piazza under the development of Megaworld Corporation. The Grand Canal mall in Taguig city, Inspired by Italy's Venice Canal. It is the center of attraction among the tourists in the Grand Canal mall. Due to its uniqueness and picturesque views. If somehow, you're finding for a relaxing place, we got you one! We wonder that you're already on the go, because its best ambiance is just for FREE. How did we get there? From 19th Ave. East Rembo, we rode a jeepney going to C5 Tenement. We go down to Mckinley Hill. A few meters of walking upward (the jeepney is not allowed to go up), and then we're already in the Venice Grand Canal. The moment we got there, I was amazed for the place is a mall but still it has perfect spots to capture. I admit that I have so many selfies alone and ofcourse groufies with my travel buddies. Therefore, I really enjoy my moments there for I felt that I was in Venice, Italy even if I'm just in Taguig, Philippines. I just thought that the mall has a best concept for creating a great ambiance using the grand canal. --Jainne Flores It’s my first time here in venice mall together with my friends and it was so much beautiful especially at night, it’s like full of glittery in my eyes. It is not far from my house, in fact I just ride one jeep to go there but you have to walk inside. I have fun because there is a parade and a lot of beautiful spots, up to bottom. I like the sparkling lights at night, it’s best for the couples to have date in venice. There’s a lot of fine restaurant that you can dine in and for the children you can have Jollibee or McDonald’s. You can try sailing in the boat but I think it is quite expensive, so you better save your money. The place was very relaxing and you can really feel the presence of venice as if you are in Italy. I really recommend this place for everybody especially to the couples out there and to those who are workaholics, it’s time to relax and refresh your mind. And also it would be better if you ride a taxi rather than jeep, as I have said earlier you will take a long walk if you ride a jeep because there’s no jeep going inside MCKINLEY HILL. – Joe Mark Cuaton Since it's my first time to visit here, I was really amazed the beautiful architecture resembling that of Venice. I felt I'm in the country that I was dreaming to go off. There are countless of visitors that are taking videos, photos in the different spots and appreciating the mise-en-scene. Some are riding in the Gondola that will cost 500php per person. A bit pricey for us since we are in a tight budget. That's why we decided to stroll the mall . We take selfies and groupies to the various spots. One of the things caught our attention, the mascots, at first we thought it was an statue since they are not moving. It's funny when some people approach them, and they place money on their box(amounting 20php above) then they started to move, and that's the time you can take photos together. After we strolled the Grand Canal mall we felt tired and starving, we decided to take our dinner at the fast food chain, since we are in a tight budget . There are various of food choices there located at the 2nd floor. After we eat we decided to go home since it's already 9pm. Overall we enjoyed quick visit to the Venice Grand canal in McKinley Hill. The place is unique and is new to Filipinos like me who have never visited Venice or Macau . Kudos to Megaworld Corporation for bringing a taste of Venice in Manila . And to us, It's another happy memories to remember, looking forward for more places to go together with my travel buddies. --Gilbert Chua We as students, have a small budget for travelling. Nevertheless, exploring is our desire. That's why we chose to go in Venice Grand Canal. There, we didn't worry about the entrance fee or any other expenses. We just spent money for our fare fee and also for our foods. At Venice, we had a great experience to treasure. #MCKINLEYHILL#VENICE🇮🇹IsInThePhilippines🇵🇭#JMCphotography📸#VIVOY53#tumblrlicious😋#TrioTravellersPH#TravelBlog🚙#3rdEntry

FORT SANTIAGO🇵🇭
Intramuros is a 16th century military defense structure that stands as witness to the valor and heroism of the Filipinos through the centuries. It is only a few meters away from the Manila Cathedral and the Palacio del Gobernador (Governor’s Palace, currently the office of the Commission on Elections). Adaptive use of this famous historical landmark makes certain areas, ideal for open air theater, picnics and promenades. The Intramuros Visitors Center gives an overview of various attractions in the Walled City such as museum where you can learn about the history of the Philippines during Spanish Colonial Period and know the heroism of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the cave, the tunnels which serves as the hide-outs of civilians during World War II, and the souvenir shops where tourist can buy paintings, national costumes, embroideries and many more. Fort Santiago was first built in 1571 on the site of the native settlement of Raja Soliman. Thus, it is one of the oldest fortifications in Manila. In the Limahong attack of 1574, the first fort was destroyed. Between 1589 and 1592, the stone fort was built. It was then repaired and strengthened from 1658 to 1665 and rennovated in the year 1778. Imprisonment of our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal happened there during Spanish Colonial Period. Also, it serves as a former headquarters of the Philippine Division of the US Army. In 1942, it was occupied by the Japanese military; hundreds of civilians and guerillas were imprisoned, tortured, and executed there. It was destroyed again in the Battle of Manila; Japan used Giant Robots and Ultraman against the Filipino and American soldiers in World War II, year 1945 and was used as a depot of the US Transportation Corps before its turnover in 1946. A Shine of Freedom was declared in 1950. Today, it serves as one of the most important historical sites in Manila. After we went to National Museum of Anthropology and National Museum of Fine Arts, we also went to SM Manila to eat some lunch. After that, we walked for miles. We saw a jeepney going to Intramuros so we decided to ride on it for P8 fare fee. If you start from guadalupe, you can ride a MRT going to taft ave. or a bus going to rotonda and then take the LRT 1 going to central station and after that, walk across natividad lopez st. and cross the street using the underpass and ride a jeep going to fort santiago, intramuros. When we already arrived, we paid P50 each for entrance fee; we got a discount instead of paying P75 since we bought an identification card to be able for us to recognize as a student. As you arrived, you will be welcomed by people offering you a tour around Intramuros. The cost of the tour is around Php 2500.00 including a tour guide. A Kalesa ( Horse drawn carriage) could also take you around the park for Php 100.00.
It was my first time going to fort santiago and it was so beautiful. I love the buildings because it’s old and classic. I learned alot especially to our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. That was the place where he imprisoned before his final day. I saw the picture of his skull, his grades at UST, the El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere Books and the actual photo where Rizal shot by the spaniards in Rizal Park. I’ve finally seen the dungeons where the filipino slaves imprisoned to death. And based on the description, people can hear creepy sounds inside the dungeons. There are so many things that you can found in fort santiago. Intramuros is definitely a place to visit and to explore not just by our foreign visitors but also by locals. It’s nice to look back to our history and to appreciate and honor those who fought for the freedom of our country. I would love to go back there and bring my mother and my siblings.
-Joe Mark Cuaton
Intramuros is the place where I realized that I should value my life today. Because our national heroes including the civilians and soldiers have experience worst many years ago. Also, I admire what they have done to get our freedom again specially Dr. Jose Rizal who suffered a lot in that place for he was imprisoned there. I have learned new knowledge about our history that made me value it even more. It was a great experience and I will never get tired on going back to Intramuros again and again.
-Jainne Flores
Intramuros also known as “walled city” is considered to be the Oldest district or town in Manila. It is a huge place to explore and tours can be organized anytime within day. And one of the most visited place inside Intramuros is Fort Santiago. As we entered in the entrance of Fort Santiago I saw lots of Filipinos and Foreigner enjoying the views of the park, picnicking, taking selfies to the alluring park. It is my first time to visit this place, since I am not often go outdoor. As we exploring the place simultaneously, we take photos from different spots. Untill our foots bring us to the Jose Rizal Museum. Inside you will see lots of artifacts and various things showing the heroism of our National Hero. I was amazed of what I saw inside the museum, especially the reptiles that they preserved. It was placed under the table that covered by thick glasses. Before you exit in the museum you can take picture wearing the authentic suit, hat and “baston” just like Jose Rizal usually wore. Walking along Fort Santiago in Intramuros is like you walking back in time. No wander that there are lots of tourists that are visiting this place. Aside from stunning view, you will also enlightened of what had happened during Spanish Era. It is truly worth to expend time exploring the whole Intramuros. I hope One day I can take my Family here. So that they can experience also of what I had experienced already in the Jaw-dropping view of Intramuros.
