MR SL ♛ USA 2020, Chase Parthicus – First Photo Challenge
Music: youtu.be/Ajz_vxo1fjA
Runway look description: For MR SL ♛ USA, Halloween doesn’t end in October even if Christmas is just around the corner. Which makes it perfect now for him to portray both holidays as Krampus the Christmas Demon! Krampus is an ancient pre-Christian folk story of an evil half-goat beast dressed as Santa who eats naughty children in Santa’s list & drags their souls to Hell! Krampus has been a prominent figure in American culture eversince the first European pilgrims settled in Massachusetts, where annual Krampus festivals are held every December 5th. Krampus is fascinating because although often depicted as pure evil, he was once a kind & devout Pagan servant & son of “Hel”, goddess of the Underworld. But he despised his dark mother & envied Saint Nicholas who was able to bring joy to all children. In retaliation, he dressed in disguise as Santa to take part in the joyous Christmas festivities. But once discovered, he was cursed by his mother as a hideous creature to serve the Underworld for eternity!
——————
For this photo challenge, I wanted to think out of the box. Or in this case, out of the book. Because although Krampus has recently made its way to Hollywood cinema, it is an age-old tale written centuries ago. So I took inspiration from a haunted children’s pop-up story book, which also has a fashion rendition by American designer brand Neiman Marcus. For the execution of the photo, I created a custom backdrop of a book, library and all the 2-dimensional “pop-up” props you see. All of this along with myself were then photographed and post-edited in harmony to capture the essence, darkness and most importantly the weird & loony “kookiness” of Krampus. And no horrific Christmas tree is complete without a horrific angel atop it, thanks to my buddy Noah for giving his big bro a helping zombie hand!
[The photo has been taken and edited ENTIRELY by Chase Parthicus (chase.ezarael). No other third party has been involved in the photography/editing/post-editing process]

MR SL ♛ AUSTRIA 2020, Varosh (santanamiguel) – First Photo Challenge
MR SL ♛ AUSTRIA chose to represent Eric Dravon for the 2nd Runway Challenge. The inspiration sounds comes from Nine Inch Nails and calls ‘Dead Souls’
—
MR SL ♛ Austria says, “If you know your dark side love and respect it. You shift between good and evil, fight with, over, for and against both, flirt with life and death. Easily provoked you rarely reflect on your actions. No remorse!”
The thought of what follows death fascinates MR SL ♛ Austria, and the film ‘The Crow’ deals with this topic from a very special point of view. The story of Eric Draven is cruel and sad. Full of murder and revenge on one hand, very romantic on the other. He identifies with the protagonist, because he also considers himself a nice guy, as long as you don’t cross him. If his loved ones are involved though, it doesn’t take much for him to really lose his temper. He doesn’t know what he would do if someone would hurt a person he really loved, it would certainly be neither nice nor clever.

MR SL ♛ Austria is wearing a jacket and chaps by Riot with a cumberbund by ContraptioN and boots by Lapointe & Bastchild. He adds a stole and chains by Gabriel, piercings by Gaeline, a tattoo by This is Wrong, makeup by A souls Delirium, feathers by Eliavah, and a raven by Jian. To complete his ensemble, he adds claws, nose bridge, belly band and rings sponsored by L’Emporio, leather leggings by Stitched, a collar by Cerberus Crossing, both of which MR SL ♛ Austria custom colored, and a collar by Meva that MR SL ♛ Austria also modified into an armband.

Cardiff Millennium Stadium
Since opening in June 1999 the Millennium Stadium has welcomed on average over 1.3 million visitors per year. Sporting the first fully-retractable roof in the UK the venue is at the leading edge as a multi-purpose multi-faceted event venue. The Millennium Stadium boasts a UEFA 5-Star rating and has hosted matches from two Rugby World Cups including the Final in 1999 witnessed two Wales Grand Slam successes in the RBS Six Nations staged six showpiece FA Cup Finals plus hosted the major artists of the music business with a plethora of major concerts and motorsports events on its CV. The installation of a partition drape system in July 2005 now means that the bowl of the Millennium must visit venue and has played home to five major sporting bodies over the last eight years. Background to the Millennium Stadium Project As early as 1994 a group redevelopment committee was set up to look at redeveloping the Wales National Stadium and the Welsh Rugby Union won the right to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup against severe competition from rival bids from the Southern Hemisphere. A review of the National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park (designed in 1962) showed that it had long since been overt 000 and 67 000 respectively and France about to build the Stade de France with a capacity of over 80 000. Capacity in the old National Stadium was 53 000 (including 11 000 standing in the East Terrace). New safety regulations would mean that the capacity would be further reduced by ‘all-seater’ arrangements. There were no spectator facilities in the old Stadium other than toilets. It was decided that the new Stadium sho 000); the home of Ajax Football Club. cardiff south wales uk nikon d5200 night skyline architecture

The Old Adobe Mission in Old Town

Construction on the church began in 1931 and completed in October 1933. It was hand-build by Catholic Mexican settlers in a Spanish Colonial style designed by Robert T. Evans. It is composed of fifty pound bricks that were made with clay, hay soil and water. They believe about 14,000 of these bricks were used in the construction. There are also fifteen stained glass windows that were made by Bernabe Herrera.
In 1949, the Old Abobe Mission became the Catholic parish and it played that role until the parish was moved to a larger location in 1956.
In 1953, the first Miracle of the Roses parade and play took place, celebrating the appearance of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531. This first pageant attracted over 7,000 people, including dignitaries. The pageant was discontinued in 1967. However, in 2007, it was resurrected and continues through today.
In 2001, the Old Abobe Mission was added to the Registry of Historic Buildings. And, during the same time, the restoration efforts began. Since then, the exterior has been fixed and repainted, new electrical and air conditioning have gone in, there has been new landscaping and so much more. Today, the restoration efforts are over 75% complete and the evidence of the heartfelt work is evident.

Chicago Il ~ Grand Staircase ~ Rookery Building

The Rookery was built in 1887–1888 by the architectural partnership of Daniel H. Burnham and John Wellborn Root, known as Burnham and Root. In the architectural boom that followed the Great Chicago Fire, architects in what would become known as the Chicago School of commercial architecture competed with each other to create the world’s first true skyscrapers. By mixing modern building techniques, such as metal framing, fireproofing, elevators and plate glass, together with traditional ones, such as brick facades and elaborate ornamentation, Burnham and Root sought to create a bold architectural statement. At the same time, they intended their buildings to be commercially successful. This building is one of the few results of their partnership that is still standing. Beginning in the early 20th century, the building underwent three major renovations. In the first, from 1905 to 1907, Frank Lloyd Wright was retained to remake the interior spaces. In keeping with contemporary tastes, Wright’s design covered Root’s elaborate wrought iron finishes with white carved Carrara marble surfaces. Nearing the peak of his fame, Wright’s changes brought enhanced status to the building, making the Rookery one of the most sought after buildings in all of Chicago. Some of Wright’s other changes included incorporating simplified ironwork and adding planters as well as light fixtures. 117

QPSR 1908 steam train R V Armstrong 448 class PB15, 4-6-0.

PB15 No.448 was built by Walkers Limited of Maryborough (builder’s number 93 of 1908) (c) as one of the very successful PB15 class of locomotives. The PB15 class were a passenger version of the B15 class (hence the "P" prefix), a key difference being larger diameter driving wheels. The "PB15" class designation follows the Queensland Government Railways naming convention of "B" for 6-coupled locomotives and "15" to designate 15-inch cylinder diameter. The PB15 class eventually numbered 233 examples and were extensively used on mail trains, country branch lines, suburban passenger and shunting turns, with several lasting to the end of QGR steam operations.
Following retirement by Queensland Government Railways, No. 448 was sold to the Pioneer Valley Amusement Park at Kuraby. It was subsequently purchased by group of enthusiasts and became the flagship locomotive for the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway at Swanbank, near Ipswich.
No. 448 was stopped for overhaul in 1997 and received a complete rebuild by the QPSR, with the boiler being overhauled and a replacement tender tank prepared. It returned to operation in 2009 after 12 years of repair and renewal. The QPSR website also includes a history of this locomotive. (a)
This locomotive has also been reported as being No.446 (Walkers b/n 91 of 1908) but wearing the number plates of sister loco 448. (c) However I have received a very authorative email from Andrew Rodgers of the QPSR who states it is actually No.448 and explains how this confusion arose:
"Many people seem to think that we renumbered Locomotive PB15 446 with 448. I can categorically inform you that this is incorrect. The locomotive is in fact 448 and can be found stamped into the frame, cylinders, rods, fittings, etc.
To give weight to my claim, the following was conveyed to me by the late Ron Armstrong, founder of the locomotive plus who was a QR Driver who actually towed 448 to Kuraby and stowed it into what was Pioneer Park as part of QR’s shunt workings on the south side.
He stated and is in many writings by Ron, that the locomotive was placed at Kuraby with 448 plates attached, these plates were then stolen and so they didn’t have a loco sitting there on display, as Ron actually had the locomotive operating at Kuraby before finally purchasing it with a small group of friends, without plates. 446 plates belonged to a friend of Ron’s and these were attached, these plates were changed in following years when the society could afford to have new plates poured and machined and that is what is seen today on our operational PB15 448." (d)
A spare PB15 boiler is also stored by the QPSR at Box Flat. Another interesting artifact at the QPSR is a hand-operated crane, built by QR on the 4-wheel tender frame of an early QR steam locomotive. A friendly fitter at the QPSR told me they still used it around the workshops! (e)
An excellent reference for further information about the PB15 class is "Locomotives in the Tropics – Volume 1 (Queensland Railways 1864 – 1910)" published by the ARHS Queensland Division.

XE3F7893 – Palacio de Peterhof – Peterhof Palace – Петерго́ф
Palacio de Peterhof – Peterhof Palace – Петерго́ф
The Peterhof Palace (Russian: Петерго́ф) is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles by Louis XIV of France. Originally intended in 1709 for country habitation, Peter the Great sought to expand the property as a result of his visit to the French royal court in 1717, inspiring the nickname used by tourists "The Russian Versailles". In the period between 1714 and 1728, the architecture was designed by Domenico Trezzini, and the style he employed became the foundation for the Petrine Baroque style favored throughout Saint Petersburg. Also in 1714, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond designed the gardens, likely chosen due to his previous collaborations with Versailles landscaper André Le Nôtre. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli completed an expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The end of the Great Northern War resulted in the Treaty of Nystad in 1721, ceding much of the Swedish Empire’s claim to the Baltic Sea to the rising Tsardom of Russia. Peter the Great already began construction of his new capital St Petersburg in 1703 after successfully capturing Swedish provinces on the eastern coast. This strategic location allowed Russian access to the Baltic Sea through the Neva River that flowed to the Gulf of Finland. The island of Kotlin and its fortress Kronstadt northeast of St Petersburg provided a gateway and commercial harbor access owing to the shallowness of water closer to the city. Throughout the early 18th century, Peter the Great built and expanded the Peterhof Palace complex as a part of his goal to modernize and westernize Russia. In 1714, Peter began construction of the Monplaisir Palace (French: "my delight") based on his own sketches. He "сhalked out not only the site but also the inside layout, some elements of the decorative finish, etc". Based in a Dutch style, this was Peter’s summer retreat (not to be confused with his Summer Palace) that he would use on his way coming and going from Europe through the harbour at Kronstadt. On the walls of this seacoast palace hung hundreds of paintings that Peter brought from Europe and allowed to weather Russian winters and the dampness of the sea without heat. In the seaward corner of his Monplaisir Palace, Peter made his Maritime Study, from which he could see Kronstadt Island to the left and St. Petersburg to the right. Later, he expanded his plans to include a vaster royal château of palaces and gardens further inland, on the model of Versailles which would become Peterhof Palace. The initial design of the palace and its garden was done by the French architect Jean-Baptiste Le Blond. The dominant natural feature of Peterhof is a 16-m-high bluff lying less than 100 m from the shore. The so-called Lower Gardens (Nizhny Sad), at 1.02 km² comprising the better part of Peterhof’s land area, are confined between this bluff and the shore, stretching east and west for roughly 200 m. The majority of Peterhof’s fountains are contained here, as are several small palaces and outbuildings. East of the Lower Gardens lies the Alexandria Park with 19th-century Gothic Revival structures such as the Kapella. Atop the bluff, near the middle of the Lower Gardens, stands the Grand Palace (Bolshoi Dvorets). Behind (south) of it are the comparatively small Upper Gardens (Verhnyy Sad). Upon the bluff’s face below the palace is the Grand Cascade (Bolshoi Kaskad). This and the Grand Palace are the centrepiece of the entire complex. At its foot begins the Sea Channel (Morskoi Kanal), one of the most extensive waterworks of the Baroque period, which bisects the Lower Gardens. The Grand Cascade is modelled on one constructed for Louis XIV at his Château de Marly,[15] which is likewise memorialised in one of the park’s outbuildings. At the centre of the cascade is an artificial grotto with two stories, faced inside and out with hewn brown stone. It currently contains a modest museum of the fountains’ history. One of the exhibits is a table carrying a bowl of (artificial) fruit, a replica of a similar table built under Peter’s direction. The table is rigged with jets of water that soak visitors when they reach for the fruit, a feature from Mannerist gardens that remained popular in Germany. The grotto is connected to the palace above and behind by a hidden corridor. The fountains of the Grand Cascade are located below the grotto and on either side of it. There are 64 fountains.[16] Their waters flow into a semicircular pool, the terminus of the fountain-lined Sea Channel. In the 1730s, the large Samson Fountain was placed in this pool. It depicts the moment when Samson tears open the jaws of a lion, representing Russia’s victory over Sweden in the Great Northern War, and is doubly symbolic.[17] The lion is an element of the Swedish coat of arms, and one of the great victories of the war was won on St Sampson’s Day. From the lion’s mouth shoots a 20-metre-high vertical jet of water, the highest in all of Peterhof. This masterpiece by Mikhail Kozlovsky was looted by the invading Germans during the Second World War; see History below. A replica of the statue was installed in 1947. Perhaps the greatest technological achievement of Peterhof is that all of the fountains operate without the use of pumps. Water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Gardens. The elevation difference creates the pressure that drives most of the fountains of the Lower Gardens, including the Grand Cascade. The Samson Fountain is supplied by a special aqueduct, over 4 km in length, drawing water and pressure from a high-elevation source. The expanse of the Lower Gardens is designed in the formal style of French formal gardens of the 17th century. Although many trees are overgrown, in the recent years the formal clipping along the many allees has resumed in order to restore the original appearance of the garden. The many fountains located here exhibit an unusual degree of creativity. One of the most notable designs is entitled ‘The Sun’. A disk radiating water jets from its edge creates an image of the sun’s rays, and the whole structure rotates about a vertical axis so that the direction in which the "sun" faces is constantly changing. The same bluff that provides a setting for the Grand Cascade houses two other, very different cascades. West of the Grand Palace is the Golden Mountain (Золотая Гора), decorated with marble statuary that contrasts with the riotous gilded figures of the Grand Cascade. To the east is the Chess Mountain (Шахматная Гора), a broad chute whose surface is tiled black and white like a chessboard. The most prominently positioned fountains of Peterhof are ‘Adam’ and ‘Eve’. They occupy symmetric positions on either side of the Sea Channel, each at the conjunction of eight paths.

Life Saver

The Sleeping Bear Point Life-saving Station since 1901 served the shipping lane known as the Manitou Passage, saving lives of shipwrecked sailors.
Later known as the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station, it was decommissioned in 1941, but was restored in 1982, included on the National Register of Historic Places, and reopened as a Maritime Museum.
On an interesting side note, this station/building had to be moved to this location because the shifting sands of the sand dunes threatened to bury the building. This architectural design became the prototype for many of the other coastal life-saving stations.

We’re over the moon happy to share news that #1 New York Times best-selling children’s book creator Robert Sabuda will be joining us this year at Jay Day. In addition to signing his gorgeous books, Robert will conduct a hands on art workshop for families at the Jay Estate.
Robert is a graduate of Pratt Institute in New York City. He has also been an associate professor at Pratt, where he began a program in Paper Engineering that continues to encourage the next generation of paper artists. He is a two-time recipient of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award and has over five million books in print translated into 26 languages worldwide. Robert appears regularly on the TV programs The Today Show and Good Morning America, and travels the world extensively to share his enthusiasm for creativity, children’s book art and literature.
Also bringing her child friendly horticultural lessons from the New York Botanical Garden’s Edible Academy is Rye’s favorite school garden creator, Anne Mottola. She and her sister Maria Mottola, a deft illustrator and graduate of the Art Students League, have launched their first trio of children’s books with NYBG Press, collectively called "Wonders in the Garden." Anne will read from these engaging and whimsically drawn books and teach kids why kohlrabi is one of the coolest vegetables they can grow!
Don’t miss the sights and tastes of autumn in New York’s Hudson Valley! Sample bites from the Meltmobile, Boxcar Cantina, Lobstercraft, Jimmy’s Soft Serve and Reddi Rollin Rooster. Purchase fresh offerings from our farmers market and vendors like The Cheese Guy, Chez Hedwige, La Talaye Catering, Coffee Labs Roasters, Arlotta Foods, John the Baker and Willie Mitchell Designs. Treat the kids to facepainting or dive into garden activities. We are grateful to Reeds, Inc. for providing " the Best Sodas in the World, Naturally" for all our JAY DAY volunteers.
Help us continue the transformation of the historic Jay Estate into a 23 acre educational park full of fun and exciting outdoor and indoor experiences!
Admission is $40 per Family; $10 Individual For more info contact us at (914) 698-9275 or [email protected]
