Roman couch and footstool from the Villa of Lucius Verus ca. 2nd Century AD. It was discovered in pieces and has been reconstructed. The frame is wood with bone and ivory carvings and red glass inlays. The cushions are of course modern but made in the style of what we see in images in villas and homes in Pompeii and Herculaneum etc. It is on display at the Met, NY.

Edwin Denby on 21st Street (c.1937) photographed by Rudy Burckhardt Edwin Denby was a American writer of dance criticism, poetry and one novel. Rudy Burckhardt was a Swiss-American filmmaker and photographer. The pair met in Switzerland in 1934 when Denby needed a passport photo. The pair moved to New York in 1935 and rented a loft on 21st street for $18 a month. Their neighbor was artist Willem de Koonig who lived in an adjacent building. They met when de Koonigs kitten showed up on their fire escape.
While Burckhardt was married twice and had two children, his relationship with Denby lasted until Denbys death in 1983. Burckhardt passed away in 1999.
