The AD Aesthete Podcast
Today I made an exciting podcast discovery - The AD Aesthete Podcast. I've gone through almost 5 episodes and am feeling truly inspired. I love hearing these design professionals talk so knowledgeably and passionately. A few quotes really spoke to me:
Quote 1: “If you look at what’s being taught at design schools, history is not emphasized, and the history of the 20th century… emphasizes modernism, so you’re not going to learn about Elsie de Wolf, you’re not going to learn about even Rob Sean Givings (sp?), who sort of straddles traditionalism and modernism, and these are important figures. They’re fascinating, and I think it’s going to make today’s designers that much more inspired and their work richer to have a deeper grounding in the past. They’re going to have a bigger foundation on which to draw upon." -Emily Evans Eerdman on her books as resources in Ep104: Revisiting Mario Buatta I feel this so much. I am thankful for my education, but I feel a huge knowledge gap, and I do feel that there was a specific perspective my school was trying to push, and now that I am more experienced, I'm not sure if I agree with it, and am lamenting that loss a bit. Hence this blog. :)
Quote 2: “The tragedy of our day is the references have been left behind. Young people today have no references. They only begin in the middle of everything, and the future is completely unknown and a void.” -Mitchell “Micky” Wolfson Jr. In Ep 106: Making Sense of the World Through Objects
To me, this describes so well my confusion on which direction to start anything. How is it possible to begin in the middle of everything? Yet that is how I feel on design, and a bit in life.
Quote 3: “Look at the interiors of people you admire and learn from that and study those interiors… He would just pour over books.” -Emily Evans Eerdmans on Maria Buatta in Ep104: Revisiting Mario Buatta This one I love, because I too love collecting books. Even if I don't completely ready through them, I love flipping through them, and I love being around them.
I can't wait to listen to more.
p.s. I am excited to learn more about Emily Evans Eerdman. I love how well-spoken and knowledgeable she is in her interview and am excited to learn she is an author with quite a few books. The local library only has three of her books, and one is listed as "in-library use only". Perhaps I dive into inter-library loans and see what that is all about.

Winter Happiness...
It is almost Christmas and it is very cold outside. This song is bringing me inspiration. The lyrics are so beautiful.

Hello tumblr.
Hello tumblr. I am an interior designer looking to learn more about design and become a more well-rounded designer and person. I am hoping this space can serve as a design diary of sorts - a place I can ramble on about the miscellaneous design related topics that I find interesting.
I love my small collection of design books. I also love going to the library to borrow books. If I purchased all the books I wanted, I would not have much money left... Libraries are treasures. I don't often read the books from start to finish. I have a tendency to get distracted halfway through... However, I wish I could easily revisit sections that inspired me. I hope to make a collection of 'snapshots' of ideas, something I can easily come back to when needing inspiration.
One of the current books I borrowed is Sottsass by Philippe Thome, published through Phaidon. It covers the life of Ettore Sottsass who helped create the Memphis Design Group and design style. I find the style very interesting and am excited to learn more about it.
xoxo
