Angsty royed thought: Ed realizing that hands that cradle him and are protective of him have also killed a lot of people. Roy's fire has never hurt him, but they have hurt others.

It's something Ed has to reconcile from the moment he understands--truly understands--that Roy's hands are covered in blood, and not the metaphorical kind. Roy has killed. He has killed combatants and innocent people alike because the Ishval war had been a genocide. The point had been to kill them all, so there had been no nuance permitted, no mercy allowed.

And Roy had followed orders.

Ed likes to imagine he'd have done things differently. He tells himself that he would have stood up and defied the military, that becoming an enemy of the state would have been worth it. But if that had been the price he was forced to pay for access to the libraries he'd needed, the ones that had ultimately led him to understanding the cost of a red stone, the ones that led him to discovering what had been planned for Amestris?

What then?

He knows that Al would have told him that it wasn't worth it--that he'd live in the armor forever if it meant that Ed didn't kill innocent people. Ed also knows he's brilliant, a literal genius, so he probably would have found a way to lie, to hide, to make it look like he was playing the game even as he refused to.

But if Al were at stake?

Ed's pride and ego have led him down terrible paths before. Would he go into a war zone, sure that he could find a loophole, then fail? What would he do if he were given no way around it? He tells himself he would never, but he remembers Tucker. He remembers Nina and Alexander, and the horrible thing that Tucker made them...

... and he's suddenly very sure that he could.

How much farther is it from killing a man who deserves it to one who is merely in the way? Would he drink himself into a stupor as he tries to live with the shame and the guilt?

He doesn't know.

And because of Roy, he will likely never have to know.

So when Roy wakes in the middle of the night, gasping and sweating and staring at his hands as though they're dripping fresh blood, Ed takes them in his own. He kisses the back of one, then the other, runs his thumbs over the scars there, and reminds Roy of where he is.

He can't cleanse Roy's hands of the blood that will forever stain them, but the hands that have killed so many are also the hands that hold him so tenderly that Ed thinks his own heart may break from it.

The same knife that can kill a man, prepares the meal. The only thing that's different is the way the tool is employed.

And Ed will do everything in his power to ensure that the knife of Roy's alchemy is forever bent toward creation, leaving the destruction for nightmares and the past alone. He will be the knife, now. Let Roy's fire be reserved for warming the hearth.

I watched FMA Brotherhood recently, and also started to read the manga. What can I say, it grabbed me by the throat like no tomorrow. I'm so obsessed with the whole story and the characters, I could scream about it all day!!! 😤😤😤

When I was a teenager, I watched the 2003 version (that I also love with my whole heart) and back then, I didn't have a ship. Well, now, after manyyyy years, RoyEd stole my heart, so here is my first (sketchy) attempt to draw them! 🦾🔥
